Tim Harris   17.10.59

Appointed in the summer of 1997, Tim has brought to Newport AFC an excellent track record of management in, and knowledge of, non-league football. A former goalkeeper, he obtained Herefordshire County Youth honours prior to joining Newport County's youth set up as well as having trials with Shrewsbury Town.
He spent two years at Gloucester, nearly five years at Cheltenham and, after a short period with Redditch, returned as a player to help Cheltenham to the Southern league Championship in 1984-85. He was then assistant manager at both Gloucester City (two seasons) and Alvechurch before being appointed Manager at Cinderford in 1990.
He rapidly elevated Cinderford to Southern League status and took them to the second round of the F A Cup Tn 1985-86. The tatter part of last season 1996-97 was spent as assistant at Gloucester City before accepting the post at Newport.

Chris Hyde   22.02.63

A builder off the pitch and a striker on it, Chris spent a year at Worcester City and three years at Gloucester before joining Abergavenny Thursdays for a brief spell. Was at Cinderford for five years helping Tim Harris to steer the Causeway club to the F A Cup second round.

Andy Fisher  30.07.72

Attended a rugby playing school in Pontypool and was capped by Welsh Colleges at full-back in the oval ball game. He then moved to Hampshire to study and played for Havant Town in two spells and Fareham Town before returning to Wales and signed for the Exiles towads the end of the 97/98 season. Works as a DJ promoting house music.

Jon Roberts  30.12.68

A Welsh non-league international, Jon started with Ferndale and moved on to a three year spell at Cardiff City . Me moved to Barry, playing there for almost 4 seasons, and joined Newport AFC in the summer of 1993. Sustained a broken leg at Cambridge in November 1996 that ruled him out for some fifteen months. Commenced his comeback with League of Wales club Inter CableTel and rejoined the Exiles in the summer.

Defenders


 

Robbie Chesters    22.08.79

A former Welsh under 18 Schools International and Chelsea trialist who made his competitive debut for AFC in September 1997. A North Walian from Shotton, despite being born across the border in England, until a move to South Wales where he is taking a course in sports psychology at the University of Glamorgan. Played schoolboy football and toured the USA with Liverpool and England star Michael Owen!

Grantley Dicks     17.10.66

A major summer signing by the Exiles, Grantley made 49 out of 51 appearances for Forest Green Rovers last season, substantially helping them to the Dr. Martens title. A Bristol postman, Dicks has a strong pedigree having made 260 Conference appearances for Bath City. Brother of West Ham's Julian Dicks, Grantley started his career with Paulton Rovers.

Mike Flynn      07.10.80

Yet another youth prodigy. AFC's version of Justin Rose - no handicap and a bagful of clubs who could take a deep interest. Captained the Welsh Schools Under 18 side and made his first team debut in the spring of the 97/98 season.

Dave Hunt    11.01.79

Came to Newport AFC in late September 1997, having been released by Cardiff City with whom he was on YTS forms. Made a name for himself with a hat trick in last season's home game with Fareham.

 

 

Toby Jackson

Signed from Salisbury City in November 1998 having helped Forest Green Rovers to the DML Championship, this powerful defender is an expereinced non league player who started out with the club of his birthplace, Bath. He subsequently played for Trowbridge Town, Gloucester City, Clevedon Town and Witney Town. Toby still lives in Bath where he works as a plasterer.

Craig Lima

Another dominant defender, Craig played for several years in the Welsh League for Cardiff Civil Service, Brecon, Taffs Well and Maesteg Park before helping Ebbw Vale qualify for Europe. He then made a big impression at Merthyr Tydfil before joing AFC in January 1999.

 

 

 

Glenn Willis

Another player who has come through the youth team having impressed during the AFC youngsters South West Counties League programme.

Utility Players


Lee Brown       24.12.76

Midfield/Forward. Originally played for local sides Cefn Fforest and Pengam, and later spent some time with Fields Park/ Pontllanfraith in the Welsh League. Having attracted the attention of Luton Town at the tender age of 12, Lee was on schoolboy forms at Portsmouth for two years and also had trials with Burnley before joining Newport for the 1995-96 season. Made an instant impact, having a scoring average of better than a goal every two games. Overcame a knee operation to show late in last season the abilities he had demonstrated prior to the injury.

Jason Donovan    26.04.74

Midfield/Defender. A maintenance electrician, gritty player Jason learnt his footballing trade with Cardiff City where he moved on from YTS status to a Cull professional. He clocked up over a hundred appearances in an AFC shirt before leaving the club in early 1997. His competitiveness makes him a favourite with Newport supporters, who welcomed him back after a short period at Ebbw Vale.

Leigh Hall    10.06.75

Midfield/Defender. Started his footballing life with Ross Town, graduating to the senior side who played in the Worcestershire Premier League. Leigh, a warehouseman, spent six months with Worcester City and had a three month trial with Hereford United, making a couple of first team appearances. Joined AFC in November 1995, making an immediate impact that attracted interest from several League clubs. Lengthy spells of injury have not helped but Leigh has shown great determination and is very popular with fans.

Danny Hill     10.01.75

Utility. A signing who made himself an immediate hit by scoring in his first two games, having previously played in Australia for a short period. He was formerly a player with Tim Harris at Cinderford Town where he attracted much attention.

Danny Hunt    29.11.78

Defender/Midfield. Won schoolboy representative honours in the Bristol and Avon areas before joining Swindon Town on YTS straight from school in 1994. Was not taken on by the County Ground club and joined Newport AFC in the summer of 1997.

 

 

Andrew Smith      22.01.80

Full Back/Midfield. Andrew has graduated from the AFC youth team making his first team debut in the spring of the 97/98 season. Prior to joining the Exiles, he was an Associate Schoolboy player with Hereford. A Welsh Schools Under 18 cap, he started a sports science degree course at the University of Glamorgan in September 98.

Bradley Thomas     25.06.73

Utility. Made his Exiles debut at Bashley in November 1997after signing from Cinderford, with whom he had played for four years. A bricklayer, Bradley spent three years with Sharpness before joining Cinderford and also had a spell in New Zealand in 1995. Last season's Player of the Year.

Midfield Players


Dean Clarke   28.07.77  

Signed in September from Merthyr Tydfil. Spent 3 years at Hereford United, including one as a contract professional, before joining Cheltenham Town in the summer of 96. Has in each of the last 2 seasons played regularly for the side finishing as runners up in the Premier Division of the Southern League. Is in the process of qualifying as an electrician.

 

 

Anthony Hopkins

 Was with Newport County as a schoolboy and YTS player, transferring to Chelsea when County dropped out of the Football League. Then spent time with Bristol City and in Sweden with IFK Uddevalla, and joined Aldershot before their demise.

 

Gary Marshall 

Began his career at Coventry City where he spent two years as a YTS trainee, before signing as a professional for Swindon Town. After a further two years, he was transferred to Cambridge Utd, where he made 35 League appearances, before linking up with Forest Green Rovers. He played a big part in their Southern Division championship campaign before injuries sustained in a serious road accident ruled him out of Rovers' second promotion success last year. He began the present season at Cirencester Town before moving across the Severn Bridge in November. He is a local authority employee and still lives in his home town.

Darren Robison     19.05.71 

A vehicle technician at RAF St. Athan, Darren seeks to bring some fine tuning to the Newport side. Signed in close season from the now sadly disbanded Trowbridge Town, this versatile player started in the South Western league with Millbrook, moving on to Falmouth Town and Truro City before stepping up to the Southern League and playng with some success for Witney Town, then briefly for Weston bfore joining Trowbridge.

Forwards


Karl Bayliss  24.02.68  

After being with Cheltenham as a youngster and making a small number of appearances in the Conference, Karl then spent two seasons with Hellenic League club Sharpness. He then moved to Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City before returning for a second spell at Forest Green. A sales rep for a timber company, Karl helped Forest Green to the Southern Division championship in 1996-97 and joined Newport AFC in September 1997. Started the present season as he ended the last one, with a hat trick.

Carl Dale 

A Welsh schoolboy and non-league international, Carl was on schoolboy forms at Arsenal before starting his senior career at Conwy Utd. After spells at Rhyl and Bangor City, Carl moved to Chester City in 1988, for whom he played over 100 games, scoring over 40 goals in the process. In August 1991 he signed for Cardiff City for a fee of £100,000. Whilst at Cardiff City he won a Division 3 Championship medal and two Welsh Cup winners medals. He played over 180 games for the Bluebirds, scoring over 70 times. Carl joined Yeovil Town at the start of the current season before becoming an 'Exile' in March of this year.

 

Steve Tapp  25.05.69

Experienced striker signed in September, previously with Cinderford Town, Trowbridge Town and Weston-super-Mare, where he was top scorer for 3 consecutive seasons.

Derek Brazil

 Derek came in August 1996 from Cardiff City where he spent four years and was a regular member of their senior squad prior to being given a free transfer at the end of 1995-96. This Irishman represented his country at under 15, 17, 18, 21 23 and B international levels. He left Ireland at age of seventeen to play for Manchester United. under Ron Atkinson and Alex Ferguson, making two first team appearances. During his time at Old Trafford, Derek played on loan with Oldham Athletic and Swansea City. He was released in December and joined Inter CableTel.

 

Neil Cooper

Right back who signed in the close season after playing within the Welsh pyramid, first in Aberaman, then moving to Pontypridd Town, Ebbw Vale, Inter CableTel and Cwmbran Town The son of former Premiership referee Keith Cooper, Neil works as a personnel officer in a hospital and his brother, Steven, is a professional at Wrexham. He was released by the Club in January.

Phil Coyne

After recognition at Gwent schoolboy level, Phil joined local Newport club Pill AFC before moving to Abergavenny Thursdays for 3 seasons where he helped the north Gwent side to Welsh League success. He joined Newport AFC in December 1991 although a serious leg Injury kept him out of the side for the latter part of the club's 1994-95 promotion campaign. Left the Exiles during the 1996-7 season to play for Tim Harris at Cinderford and made enough impression to be wanted by the new AFC manager when he was appointed last year. Released by the Club in September.

Steve Crouch

Brought a good deal of experience when signed in September 1997. He had spells at Cheltenham Town, Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City and later moved to Weston-Super-Mare and Cinderford. A mortgage adviser with a building society, Steve joined Newport AFC from Witney Town for whom he played in the 1996-97 season. Released by the club in September he later joined Cinderford.

Paul Evans

A former Welsh Youth international, Paul played League football for both Cardiff City and Newport County, before establishing a reputation as a prolific scorer in non-league soccer.. He has had three separate spells at Barry Town as well as two seasons at Merthyr Tydfil. He had been a target for AFC since the club was formed and signed for the Exiles in August 1997. He was AFC's top scorer with Left Penydarren Park in February 1997 and spent a short time with Ebbw Vale before signing for the Exiles in August of that year. He was AFC's top scorer with 24 goals last season, despite spending the last few weeks on loan to Merthyr. Signed for Inter CableTel in September.

 

James French

Like Lee Brown, James is German only by birth. He played as a 16 year old for Tim Harris at Cinderford Town before joining Bristol Rovers on YTS forms in 1996. Currently a professional at the Second Division club, he joined AFC on a 3 month loan in December and scored in both his first two games.

Phil Preedy

Phil spent a total of five years with his home town club, three of them as a full time professional. playing 50 first team games. During his time at Edgar Street he won a Welsh Youth Cup winners medal, scoring in the final against Wrexham. He joined Merthyr on loan during the 1996-97 season before signing for Gloucester City where Tim Harris was then assistant manager. He joined Newport AFC in October 1997. He was released in November and joined Evesham.

Chris Smith

A cast stonemaker by trade, Chris was a part time player with Bristol Rovers before having two and a half seasons with Bath and a brief spell with Gloucester. After a couple of years out of the game, he played for Cinderford Town and Forest Green Rovers, helping the latter to the Southern Division championship in 1996-97. He signed for the Exiles early in the 1997-8 season. He left in September to join Forest Green Rovers.
