A North Walian from Shotton, despite being born across the border in England, until a move to South Wales where he is taking a course in sports psychology at the University of Glamorgan. Played schoolboy football and toured the USA with Liverpool and England star Michael Owen!

Grantley Dicks

A major summer signing by the Exiles, Grantley made 49 out of 51 appearances for Forest Green Rovers last season, substantially helping them to the Dr. Martens title. A Bristol postman, Dicks has a strong pedigree having made 260 Conference appearances for Bath City. Brother of West Ham's Julian Dicks, Grantley started his career with Paulton Rovers.

Mike Flynn

Yet another youth prodigy. AFC's version of Justin Rose - no handicap and a bagful of clubs who could take a deep interest. Captained the Welsh Schools Under 18 side and made his first team debut in the spring of the 97/98 season.

Dave Hunt

Came to Newport AFC in late September 1997, having been released by Cardiff City with whom he was on YTS forms. Made a name for himself with a hat trick in last season's home game with Fareham.

Toby Jackson
Signed from Salisbury City in November 1998 having helped Forest Green Rovers to the DML Championship, this powerful defender is an expereinced non league player who started out with the club of his birthplace, Bath. He subsequently played for Trowbridge Town, Gloucester City, Clevedon Town and Witney Town. Toby still lives in Bath where he works as a plasterer.

Craig Lima
Another dominant defender, Craig played for several years in the Welsh League for Cardiff Civil Service, Brecon, Taffs Well and Maesteg Park before helping Ebbw Vale qualify for Europe. He then made a big impression at Merthyr Tydfil before joing AFC in January 1999.

Lee Brown

Midfield/Forward. Originally played for local sides Cefn Fforest and Pengam, and later spent some time with Fields Park/ Pontllanfraith in the Welsh League. Having attracted the attention of Luton Town at the tender age of 12, Lee was on schoolboy forms at Portsmouth for two years and also had trials with Burnley before joining Newport for the 1995-96 season. Made an instant impact, having a scoring average of better than a goal every two games. Overcame a knee operation to show late in last season the abilities he had demonstrated prior to the injury.

Jason Donovan

Midfield/Defender. A maintenance electrician, gritty player Jason learnt his footballing trade with Cardiff City where he moved on from YTS status to a Cull professional. He clocked up over a hundred appearances in an AFC shirt before leaving the club in early 1997. His competitiveness makes him a favourite with Newport supporters, who welcomed him back after a short period at Ebbw Vale.

Leigh Hall

Midfield/Defender. Started his footballing life with Ross Town, graduating to the senior side who played in the Worcestershire Premier League. Leigh, a warehouseman, spent six months with Worcester City and had a three month trial with Hereford United, making a couple of first team appearances. Joined AFC in November 1995, making an immediate impact that attracted interest from several League clubs. Lengthy spells of injury have not helped but Leigh has shown great determination and is very popular with fans.

Danny Hill

Utility. A signing who made himself an immediate hit by scoring in his first two games, having previously played in Australia for a short period. He was formerly a player with Tim Harris at Cinderford Town where he attracted much attention.

Danny Hunt

Defender/Midfield. Won schoolboy representative honours in the Bristol and Avon areas before joining Swindon Town on YTS straight from school in 1994. Was not taken on by the County Ground club and joined Newport AFC in the summer of 1997.

Andrew Smith

Full Back/Midfield. Andrew has graduated from the AFC youth team making his first team debut in the spring of the 97/98 season. Prior to joining the Exiles, he was an Associate Schoolboy player with Hereford. A Welsh Schools Under 18 cap, he started a sports science degree course at the University of Glamorgan in September 98.

Bradley Thomas

Utility. Made his Exiles debut at Bashley in November 1997after signing from Cinderford, with whom he had played for four years. A bricklayer, Bradley spent three years with Sharpness before joining Cinderford and also had a spell in New Zealand in 1995. Last season's Player of the Year.

Dean Clarke

Signed in September from Merthyr Tydfil. Spent 3 years at Hereford United, including one as a contract professional, before joining Cheltenham Town in the summer of 96. Has in each of the last 2 seasons played regularly for the side finishing as runners up in the Premier Division of the Southern League. Is in the process of qualifying as an electrician.

Anthony Hopkins
Was
with Newport County as a schoolboy and YTS player, transferring to Chelsea when
County dropped out of the Football League. Then spent time with Bristol City and
in Sweden with IFK Uddevalla, and joined Aldershot before their demise.

Gary Marshall
Began his career at Coventry City where he spent two years as a YTS trainee, before signing as a professional for Swindon Town. After a further two years, he was transferred to Cambridge Utd, where he made 35 League appearances, before linking up with Forest Green Rovers. He played a big part in their Southern Division championship campaign before injuries sustained in a serious road accident ruled him out of Rovers' second promotion success last year. He began the present season at Cirencester Town before moving across the Severn Bridge in November. He is a local authority employee and still lives in his home town.

Darren Robison

A vehicle technician at RAF St. Athan, Darren seeks to bring some fine tuning to the Newport side. Signed in close season from the now sadly disbanded Trowbridge Town, this versatile player started in the South Western league with Millbrook, moving on to Falmouth Town and Truro City before stepping up to the Southern League and playng with some success for Witney Town, then briefly for Weston bfore joining Trowbridge.
