Peter NICHOLAS

MANAGER

Born Newport 10/11/59

 

Appointed in November 2002, Peter took the club to the final of the FAW Premier Cup last season, the team beating both Swansea City and Cardiff City on the way.

A 73 times capped Welsh International, Peter was at Crystal Palace from the age of 16 for four years, playing nearly 130 matches before moving to Arsenal, where he made a further 60 of a total of over 450 Football League appearances.

He returned to Crystal Palace for fifteen months and then moved to Luton, Chelsea, Aberdeen and Watford. After leaving Vicarage Road, he began his coaching career with Chelsea’s youth team before returning to Selhurst Park in a similar role, rising to assistant manager during a five-year spell.

He then managed Barry Town in the 2000-2001 season before joining forces with Colin Addison at Swansea where they took Swansea from danger of relegation to a position of respectability, financial pressures on the club bringing about their departure.

 

 
Duncan ROBERTS

GOALKEEPER

Born King's Lynn 24/06/79

 

Signed in September 2003, making his debut at home to Weymouth. Once on a 2 year YTS arrangement at Mansfield, Duncan later played for King’s Lynn, Harrow, St. Albans and Bedford before spending much of the 2002-2003 season at Oldham Athletic.

Andrew DELVE

GOALKEEPER

Born  Newport  08/09/85 

 

Now in his second season at County’s Academy, he established himself as number one choice in the youth team and has shown sufficient ability and confidence to be entrusted with a senior squad place.

 

 
 

 
Terry EVANS

DEFENDER

Born  Pontypridd  08/01/76 

A summer signing having been released by Swansea City, Terry is a former four times capped Welsh under 21 international as well as being a Welsh non-league international. Previously with Cardiff City as a trainee and Barry Town, Terry played under manager Peter Nicholas at both Jenner Park and the Vetch Field.  Won four FAW League of Wales championship medals with Barry and played in European competition as a result.

Gary LLOYD

DEFENDER

Born  Swansea 26/03/72 

 

An early August signing from Barry Town where he spent nine years during which he played in European competition for the Jenner Park club. He has gained Welsh League recognition, played and captained the Welsh semi professional side and has had a call up to the Welsh Senior squad. Previously, he was with Llanelli for six years.

Steve WILLIAMS

DEFENDER

Born  Cardiff 02/04/84 

 

Although born in Wales’ capital city, Steve has spent his whole life in Merthyr Tydfil. Howevert, until his release in the summer, all his career, since the age of eleven, has been at Ninian Park, the last two years as a YTS player.

Jeff ECKHARDT

DEFENDER

Born  Sheffield 07/10/65 

 

A regular member of County’s defence for the past two seasons, this vastly experienced player  joined the club having spent five years with Nationwide League neighbours Cardiff City. His career has seen him play well over 500 Football League games, commencing with Sheffield United before moving to Fulham and Stockport County and he is an integral part of the club’s Junior Soccer Academy.

 
 
Darren JONES

DEFENDER

Born Newport 28/08/83 

 

Signed in February, having been on loan to Forest Green Rovers for most of the current season, following an earlier short loan spell with Cheltenham. He was also at The Lawns last season, making 33 appearances in Forest Green colours.  A Wales Schools and youth international, he made two Football League appearances for Bristol City, having progressed through their Academy.

 

 
 
 
Andrew THOMAS

DEFENDER

Born Newport 11/10/82 

 

A product of the successful Newport Football Academy, Andrew has made great strides in his career and was deservedly rewarded with Welsh semi-professional caps at the end of last season. He has made over 150 senior appearances for the club, being able to play either in central defence or full back He made a goalscoring Dr. Martens League debut at Rothwell in April 2000 and was capped eight times for the Welsh Schools under-18 team.

 

                         

 
 
Lloyd STONE

DEFENDER

Born Newport  15/03/85 

Lloyd is a product of Ebbw Vale and Gwent Schools FA and the Newport County Academy. Likely to be an important player for the club in the future, he had spells with both Swansea and Cardiff as a schoolboy. Came on for first team against Steaua Bucharest in a 2002 pre-season game and made four senior appearances last season.

 

 
Scott MORGAN

DEFENDER

Born Colchester 22/03/75 

Scott joined County in October. He is a left sided central defender who was formerly with Barry Town, and subsequently played for Conference side Forest Green Rovers whom he joined in August. Twenty-eight-years old, Scott had European experience during his three-year stay at Jenner Park

Shaun O'BRIEN

DEFENDER

Born Merthyr 26/07/86 

 

Shaun was signed in September 2002 from Brecon Corries having previously been with Swansea City. Shaun, who lives in Merthyr, has been a regular in our youth team and was called up to the first team squad in the later stages of last season.

 
 
Nathan DAVIES

MIDFIELD

Born  Pontypool  26/05/82 

 

Welsh non-league international matches have completed the last two seasons for Nathan, who is another product of the Newport Schools Football Academy. Eight-times capped by Wales Schools under 18’s, he made his Dr. Martens debut in January 2000 and, by the end of last season had made over 120 first team appearances

Gareth PHILLIPS

Born  Rhondda 19/08/79 

 

Capped by Wales at various age levels up to under 21, Gareth was released by Swansea City at the end of last season  He had been at the Vetch Field since 1996, as a YTS player then having five years as a full time professional.

Allan STEVENSON

MIDFIELD

Born  Chelmsford 16/12/83 

 

Allan was a former youngster at Chester City but released by the Deva Stadium club after their relegation from the Football League. He was enrolled in County’s Academy and became a member of Gwent Schools and County FA squads in 2001-2002, making most appearances for a first year Academy member in that campaign.

He came to the fore in the latter stages 2001-2002 making starting appearances in six of the last seven Dr. Martens League matches but illness and injury restricted his involvement last season

Born  Newport 31/01/85 

Exciting left sided player from Pontypool who will be looking to establish himself this season after coming to the end of a two-year spell at County’s Academy. Currently considering a University course in Sports Science, Chris formerly played for Pontypool based junior clubs New Inn and Griffithstown.

In his second spell with the Exiles, having made over twenty appearances in 1997-1998. Initially with Cardiff City and Oxford United on YTS having spent 2 years with Manchester United as a schoolboy. Jamie won Welsh under 15 honours and also made the squad at under 16 & 18 level as well. Rejoined County in January having been in HM Forces

A central midfield player from Tredegar. Played regularly for welsh schools under 18.  Will be pushing for a first team spot this season. Interested a number of league teams already this season.

Jamie MORALEE

FORWARD

Born Wandsworth 2/12/71 

 

Signed from Forest Green in January after an initial loan spell, Jamie was involved in two transfers totalling £750,000 earlier in his career in moves from Crystal Palace to Millwall and then to Watford.

He later played for two years at Crewe and also had three months with Belgian side Royal Antwerp before moving to Brighton, Colchester and Barry Town where he experienced European football with current manager Peter Nicholas.

Sam BOWEN

FORWARD

Born Hereford 21/4/76

 

A late January signing from Bromsgrove, Sam made his County debut against Cardiff City in the FAW Premier Cup. He was with local Hereford club Westfields for three years before Colin Addison took him to Merthyr for a season prior to a £5,000 transfer to Worcester.

Sam spent four years at St. George’s Lane under then manager George Rooney with whom he later linked up at Bromsgrove Rovers, having in the meantime played with several non-league sides and also spent a season playing with the oval ball. He also had a couple of games with Forest Green in late December on loan from Bromsgrove.

Another player once on schoolboy forms at Cardiff, John is now a regular in the first team squad having graduated from the youth team. He has created quite an impression, including two goals at Worcester in November

Raith PLANT

FORWARD

Born  Merthyr 05/12/82 

 

A product of the clubs’ Academy link up, Raith had trials with several Football League clubs, and came to local prominence with a goal a game average for League of Wales side Cwmbran Town for whom he has played as substitute in European football. A Welsh Schools under 18 international, Raith joined Newport in October 2000 and is currently studying Sports Science at the University of Mid Glamorgan. Raith is at present on loan to Barry Town.

 
 
Sam O'SULLIVAN

Born  Aberdare 14/07/86 

 

A prolific scorer with the Youth team last season, Sam was once on Cardiff City’s books as a schoolboy and made his league debut this season. Still eligible for youth team selection, he has already shown in first team action that he has a more than promising future
