MATCH REPORT: Cardiff City Ladies 3 – 2 Newport County Ladies – 4/9/16
The Exiles got their SWWGL season underway on Sunday September 4th with a tough opening fixture away to rivals Cardiff City. The game was a fantastic opportunity for the team to gauge how far we have come during the Summer, off the back of 3 very positive results in the final few pre-season matches.
A frantic first 20 minutes showed that both teams were eager to get their season off to a winning start, with chances at both ends of the pitch. It was the home team that got the break through after half an hour, with a teasing ball across the six-yard box tapped in at the far post. Newport weren’t disheartened though and continued to try and play the right way, and we were rewarded 5 minutes before half time with a cracking equalising goal. Good pressure as a team, deep in Cardiff’s half saw Newport nick the ball back 30 yards out from goal, with Megan Jones turning and sending a shot in to the top corner of the goal from 25 yards out. 1-1 at Half Time.
The second half continued where the first finished, with both teams going at it trying to find the important third goal. Cardiff again took the lead, with a well taken goal after a long ball from the back beat the Newport back four. The Exiles showed their spirit again though, fighting back in to the game and drawing the score level after an hour. Gabby Scott delivered perfect corner after perfect corner all game, and finally one of her set pieces got the reward it deserved with Left Back Georgie Cridland nodding home to make it 2-2. Three points were there for the taking now, both teams had several good chances to force home a winner but it was Cardiff who got the decisive goal in much the same manner as their second.
In the end not the result we had hoped for, but the girls did brilliantly to keep pace with much more experienced players and a top team at this level. A draw would have been a fair result, with a bit more luck Newport could have come away with all three points. There were plenty of positives to take from the game, and I’m sure this very young team will enjoy a successful season as we continue to improve.
