THURSDAY 10 April 2008

NEWPORT COUNTY GIRLS 0 CARDIFF CITY LADIES 7

Newport County Girls entertained local rivals Cardiff City at home. County Girls started the game well with the back four and midfield duo Lauren Lambert and Simone Pengelly working hard to keep out the Cardiff attack.

The girls really took the game to Cardiff in the first 25mins with both Chelsey Flenley and Jordan Hillman coming close to break the deadlock, it was then that a mistimed tackle inside the 18yard box gave City Ladies a penalty kick which they scored to take the lead. County girls continued to battle with their opponents, but with some very neat passing and a superb cross helped City to their second.

With Cardiff City taking the lead into half time the County girls with all there fight found it hard to overcome the deficit and City Ladies went on to extend their lead in the second half.

County were missing captain Becky Hadley, who was away with the Welsh Trust Under 16 Girls Squad.

WEDNESDAY 16 April 2008

CYNCOED 1 NEWPORT COUNTY GIRLS 5

Newport County Girls made the short trip away to Cyncoed who they had overcome in the opening game of the season. County Girls were on a mission to get back to winning ways after their home defeat to Cardiff City Ladies the previous week.

County Girls started the game slowly with much of the play going in the favour of the home team. Despite a strong performance from left wing Alyce Kehoe, County Girls went behind to Cyncoed who started to control the game in the first half, however, against the run of play Chelsey Flenley pinched a goal to make the score line 1-1 at half time.

With the game very much in the hands of the home side the County coaches were forced to make a change at half time, on came Jade Williams upfront replacing Sophie Leyshon at left back, with Becky Hadley and Lauren Lambert moving back to their normal positions of centre midfield and left back County Girls started  the second half a stronger side.

County Girls started to pass the ball around the pitch making it difficult for the Cyncoed girls to break down the play, and with the whole team playing well, the second half started to unfold with the Girls becoming stronger and stronger as the game went on.  It didn’t take long for the County to net their second of the game with a well headed corner from centre half Katie Burridge grabbing her second of the season.  Then CHELSEY FLENLEY netted another two second half goals to claim her hat trick, one each side of BECKY HADLEY’S headed finish giving the County Girls a 5-1 away victory.

County Side:

Rhian Cocker, Real White, Sophie Leyshon (Jade Williams), Katie Burridge, Emily Edwards  Simone Pengelly, Bethan Spruce, Lauren Lambert, Chelsey Flenley, Becky Hadley (c). Alyce Kehoe.

Subs (not used):

Steph Snelgrove, Hannah Pullin, Sabina Adams, Jordan Hillman

Goal Scorers:

Chelsey Flenley 3, Katie Burridge, Becky Hadley.

THURSDAY 30 MARCH 2008

NEWPORT COUNTY GIRLS 5  PONTNEWYDD 0

Newport County Girls yet again produce a great result at home when they entertained local rivals Pontnewydd. County took their time in getting started and were a little off the pace in the early stages.  However KATIE BURRIDGE netted her first goal for the club, when she struck the ball from the halfway line to lob the Pontnewydd goal keeper, much to the surprise of Katie and the fans who had turned out to watch.

Following this superb strike County girls started to take control and some excellent football was played in the build-up to JORDAN HILLMAN'S goal.  Jordan worked hard to close down the visiting goalkeeper to slot the ball past her for County's second of the night.

The game then starting to open up and County had to work hard to stay in front and another strong performance from the always improving back four of White, Burridge, Edwards and Leyshon ensured that the County keeper was left with little to do.  In the second half County girls were again in charge with some great football being played by Simone Pengelly and Becky Hadley in  the middle of the park, the duo dominated the play and County always look like grabbing another goal before the end of the game.

With the competition for top scorer becoming a head to head race between CHELSEY FLENLEY and BECKY HADLEY, the pressure was on for both to get on to the score sheet.  Before the game they were tied on 19 goals for the season so far and both Flenley and Hadley scored in the second half to make it 4-0 before FLENLEY scored her second to go to the top of the charts.

After today's win County girls have now scored 20 goals in their last two games and we now face a tough home fixture against top of the league Cardiff City.  Let's hope the good run of results continues.

County Side:

Steph Snelgrove, Real White, Sophie Leyshon, Emily Edwards, Simone Pengelly, Bethan Spruce, Becky Hadley, Chelsey Flenley, Jordan Hillman, Lauren Lambert.

Subs:  Rhian Cocker, Hannah Pullin, Sabina Adams, Jade Williams.

Newport County Girls made the short trip away to Sully on a Sunday looking to improve on their recent form.

Newport County started the stronger of the two teams scoring an early goal to set themselves on their way, Sully Sports had a weakened team for this fixture and County girls took full advantage of this.  County went into half time leading 8-0 with first half hat-tricks for Chelsey Flenley and Simone Pengelly, Becky Hadley and Alyce Kehoe were County’s other first half scorers.  County’s back four dealt with everything that come their way, leaving goal keeper Steph Snelgrove with very little to do.

With the County coaches looking to keep players fresh for their busy schedule over the next few weeks they took full advantage of their lead making four half-time changes and resting Real White (Sabina Adams), Simone Pengelly (Lauren Lambert), Bethan Spruce (Jade Williams),  Jordan Hillman (Hannah Pullin).

The County Girls remained focused on the task in hand and went on to score 7 second half goals with another hat-trick for Chelsey Flenley  and four for Becky Hadley.  They played some great football and really put in a very strong team performance.  Full credit also to Sully Sports who fought until the final whistle despite the score line.

County Girls will now play local rivals Pontnewydd at home on Thursday 3 April KO 6:30pm.

GOOD LUCK TO THE COUNTY GIRLS

Congratulations to Becky Hadley on making it into the Welsh U16 Girls development squad, the squad will travel to play in Ireland on 10 April.

Good luck to Becky and the rest of the squad from all at Newport County.

County side from...
Steph Snelgrove, Real White, Jade Williams, Emily Edwards, Katie Burridge, Simone Pengelly, Becky Hadley, Bethan White, Alyce Kehoe, Chelsey Flenley, Jordan Hillman, Sabina Adams.

County were forced to make a first half change when midfielder Simone Pengelly was taken off with a back injury and we trailed at the break.  However Jordan Hillman netted her first goal for County in the second half. only for Penydarren score a late goal to win the game.

SUNDAY 02 MARCH 2008

Garw 0 Newport County Girls  0

County Girls made the long trip to Garw today and fought hard to earn themselves a well deserved point. Newport were forced to make an earlier first half change when goalkeeper Steph Snelgrove injured herself colliding with a home forward when making a good save.  She was replaced by Rhian Cocker.

With both side so evenly matched chances at goal where hard to come by, Becky Hadley hit one chance just wide from 20 yards out after picking the ball up just inside the Garw half and making a good run forward to open up their defence, and Chelsey Flenley and Simone Pengelly also came close in the first half.

At half time County made a change with Sabina Adams coming off and Jordan Hillman going on to partner Chelsey Flenley up front.  Both sides tried hard to break the score line with Simone Pengelly hitting the ball just wide from distance, some excellent work down the right hard side by Bethan Spruce gave County some hope but they just couldn't break the deadlock.

Late on in the second half substitute Jordan Hillman hit the side netting from a tight angle just outside the six yard area.  Garw then pushed on with three up front, to put pressure on a County back four that played so well.  A close range effort from Garw forced an excellent saved from Rhian Cocker and the County Girls came away with a well-earned point.

County will now play Penydarren & Merthyr at home on 9 March in the League Cup.

Line up: Steph Snelgrove, Real White, Sabina Adams,  Emily Edwards, Katie Burridge, Simone Pengelly, Bethan Spruce, Becky Hadley,  Chelsey Flenley, Jade Williams, Sophie Leyshon, Hannah Pullin, Rhian Cocker, Jordan Hillman

SUNDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2008

CRICKHOWELL 1 Newport County Girls  3

Flenley Scores Hat trick, as "County Girls" claim win at Crickhowell !
Newport County Girls enjoyed a well deserved win against Crickhowell. County played some fine football on a wet and cold Sunday afternoon.  This may well have been one of the strongest performances from the girls so far this season.

With Chelsey Flenley netting her second hat-trick in two games the hard work that the girls have put in on the training ground has paid off. They really worked hard for each other with strong displays from all over the pitch and also from the subs that came on; with debuts for both Hannah Parrock and Jordan Hillman the County coaches have a selection headache ahead of next week's away trip to Garw.  County took an earlier lead against the home side and looked in control for most of the game, however, a late injury to Emily Edwards put County under pressure late on in the game which also saw a consolation goal for the home side.

Line up: Steph Snelgrove, Real White, Sabina Adams,  Emily Edwards, Katie Burridge, Simone Pengelly, Bethan Spruce, Becky Hadley,  Chelsey Flenley, Jade Williams, Sophie Leyshon, Hannah Pullin, Rhian Cocker, Jordan Hillman, Hannah Parrock.

TUESDAY 4 DECEMBER 2007

Cup Final (sponsored by Tesco)

CARDIFF CITY GIRLS (4) 8 NEWPORT COUNTY GIRLS (1) 1 (at Jenner Park, Barry)

The girls tried work hard but were overcome by a stronger and more experienced Cardiff side, but this is their first season in competitive football and they have done really well in reaching the final.  All the coaches at the club are really pleased with their attitudes and efforts so far.  After conceding two early goals, BECKY HADLEY reduced the arrears, but Cardiff  scored another two by half-time and dominated the second half.

Line-up: Rhian Cocker, Real White, Lauren Lambert, Emily Edwards, Katie Burridge, Simone Pengelly, Becky Hadley, Bethan Spruce, Alyce Kehoe, Jade Williams, Chelsey Flenley.  Subs: Sabina Adams, Hannah Pullin, Faye Roberts, Sophie Leyshon, Steph Snelgrove.

SUNDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2007

Welsh Under 16 Girls Cup

NEWPORT COUNTY GIRLS (0) (3) 3  LLANGYFELACH GIRLS (3) (3) 3   AET.

(Llangyfelach won 4-2 on penalties)

The County Girls staged a great comeback in their Welsh Cup match at Hartridge to take the tie into extra time, only to lose out in a penalty shoot-out.  But both teams can be proud of their excellent performances in a highly entertaining game played in a very good spirit.  Our visitors from Swansea scored three first half goals through Georgia Tooze (2) and Natalie Williams, though the County Girls had plenty of the play.  In the second half, a strong wind advantage was used to good effect by the home side who reduced the arrears with long range efforts from Simone Pengelly and Lauren Lambert.  As the pressure mounted Alyce Kehoe was on hand to equalise after the Llangyfelach defence struggled to contain County.  Extra time could not separate the teams but the visitors held their nerve in the penalty shoot-out and we wish them well in the future.

Line-ups:

County: Steph Snelgrove (Rhian Cocker), Real White, Lauren Lambert, Emily Edwards, Katie Burridge, Bethan Spruce, Simone Pengelly, Becky Hadley, Alyce Kehoe, Chelsey Flenley, Sophie Leyshon (Jade Williams).  Subs not used: Hannah Pullin, Sabina Adams.

Llangyfelach: Kate Harwood, Ella Walsh, Sophie Otten, Natalie Williams, Georgia Tooze, Lauren Hancock, Samantha Beynon, Rachel Percival, Charlotte Hock, Rhiannon Summerfield, Chelsea Mills.
