PREVIEW | Newport County AFC vs Luton Town FC

Seven points behind, a game in hand and nine games remaining in the football league season. It’s definitely not all over yet.

Looking at the visitors

This will be another tough fixture for Newport County with Luton currently sitting in the League 2 playoff places. Nevertheless this is an important fixture as County’s game in hand over the rest of the sides at the bottom of the table and a victory against Luton will make the table look a lot better. Luton have drawn four out of their last six games and have scored the fewest number of goals of any side in the top eight of the league which sounds promising for the County back line, but they are where they are because no side has conceded fewer goals than Luton, less than a goal a game on average. Danny Hylton is their top scorer with 23 goals this season with Cameron McGeehan in second place with 11 and Isaac Vassell has nine.

Last Meeting

It was a 96th minute penalty that gave Luton Town the win the last time these two sides met in only the third game of the season. The home side had gone in front from the spot from McGeehan just after the hour mark before Myrie-Williams equalised for County twenty minutes from time. Luton then went down to ten men with five minutes to go but still came away with all three points, Darren Jones conceding Newport’s second penalty deep into stoppage time, and McGeehan scored his second of the afternoon to seal the victory.

Last Time Out

County fell by three goals to one against Blackpool on Saturday at Rodney Parade, despite being the stronger side for parts of the game. The game was much more even than the score line suggests and when the breakaway goal in stoppage time and the penalty are taken into consideration, County can feel that they deserved a least a point from the game.

The Man in Charge

Charles Breakspear is in charge for this fixture with his assistants Adrian Tranter and Robert Dabbs, the fourth official is Kevin Johnson. Breakspear has taken charge of County twice so far this season, the reverse of this fixture and the Boxing Day clash with Portsmouth. Last season, he was in charge of Newport’s memorable FA Cup Third Round tie with Blackburn Rovers during which he sent off Joe Day in stoppage time. In the 2014/15 season he refereed the 0-0 draw away at Plymouth Argyle and in the 2013/14 season he sent off David Pipe in the 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Dagenham and Redbridge. He took charge of Newport four times in the 2012/13 season, the 0-0 home draw with Stockport, the 2-0 home victory over Mansfield, the 1-1 away draw with Ebbsfleet and the 1-0 home win over Braintree. In his career he has refereed 150 games and handed out 563 yellow cards at an average of 3.75 per game, and he has dismissed players on 34 occasions.
