SATURDAY 12 AUGUST
CONFERENCE SOUTH
FISHER 3 COUNTY 3

County and their hosts Fisher Athletic began the new season in style, sharing the spoils in a six goal thriller at windswept Champion Hill Stadium.

County battered Fisher in the early stages and took the lead in the 5th minute, Ian  Hillier  glancing  home  an  in-swinging  Jason Bowen  corner.   Big  Julian

Alsop was dominating the home defence and with 'Beckham' like audacity saw his 50 yard lob sail over the stranded Paul Nicholls in the home goal and land onto the roof of the net. A second goal seemed inevitable but came at the other end against the run of play. Four County defenders failed to dispossess the livewire Leroy Griffiths and Anton Robinson fired home the loose ball from close range.

Fisher were using their pace to good effect and came back into the game strongly. Sam O'Sullivan came close to beating Nicholls at his near post before Chris Piper glanced the post at the other end. Fisher went ahead four minutes from the break with a towering header from centre half Paul Lorraine from a corner. Within a minute County restored parity, Alsop sweeping home a slide rule ball from O'Sullivan following sustained pressure from The Exiles. In the final minute of the half Craig Hughes won a penalty which, against the odds, Nicholls saved to his right from the boot of Jason Bowen.

Griffiths curled a speculative shot inches wide of the post in the opening minutes of the second half and then forced Mark Ovendale into a one handed save at his near post. The action came thick and fast with captain John Brough heading a Steve Watts effort off the line. County edged ahead on the hour. From a deep Bowen free kick Hillier's return cross was headed back across Nicholls and into the far corner of the net by John Brough.

The game of pin-ball continued and Sam O'Sullivan followed Brough's example by clearing Robinson's header off the line. There was always another goal left in this match and it was Fisher who recorded it. With only 11 minutes remaining Hillier misjudged a long lofted forward ball and Griffiths stole in behind him to poke the ball home to cap a fine individual performance.

County will take this point and look to build a strong start to the season with two home matches in four days later this week. Champion Hill will be a tough place to visit this term and County might well look back on a point gained rather than two lost.
