County met their match at Cwmbran Stadium in the Gwent FA Senior Cup when Cwmbran Celtic rose to the occasion and earned a comfortable victory against a squad that included eight of those who had played at Merthyr in the previous evening’s FA Youth Cup tie.  Peter Beadle also included Lee Fowler and Sam O’Sullivan who were given their first action since early September following injuries, while Craig Hughes was given the chance to rediscover his scoring touch.  But while most of the County fans present would have been disappointed to see the MacWhirter Welsh League side have the better of proceedings, Peter Beadle was happy with the evening’s work.

“It was a good evening except for the result because three members of the first team squad came through it unscathed, but it proved too much for those who had played such a hard game at Merthyr.  But it was good for them to play against a team of men even if the physical side of the game proved too much.

“Cwmbran Celtic had a different perspective and it was their cup final but good luck to them in the rest of the competition.”

Celtic’s first goal came in emphatic style after a County attack broke down in the 28th minute when SHAUN WILLIAMSON latched onto a long clearance and gave David Pearce no chance from outside the penalty area.  O’Sullivan, Luke Prosser and Hughes all had chances to equalise before half-time but all three were off target with their attempts, though Prosser was unfortunate to see his 58th minute header hit the bar.

Hughes had another great chance but he snatched at his shot in the 62nd minute and Tom Morgan in the Celtic goal made a brave block before Guppy knocked the rebound wide.  CRAIG CHEEDY should not have been allowed the space to fire home from inside the ‘D’ from a well-worked 64th minute corner and WILLIAMSON concluded an impressive evening’s work with an excellent third goal nine minutes later.

The most satisfying aspect of the evening for County was the introduction of Paul Cochlin as substitute immediately following the third goal.  The tall defender, who has become a very popular part of the Spytty scene, has had to fight his way back from two serious injuries, and he showed in the short time he was on the field that he has not lost his competitive instinct.

So well done to Celtic and well done also to referee Mr Adie and his assistants for exemplary performances.  A special mention also to the stars of the turnstiles, Rhiannon and Rose, who provided the evening’s glamour!
