John Sheridan announced as County manager

2 October 2015

Newport County AFC are delighted to confirm the appointment of John Sheridan as first-team manager.

John, who left Plymouth Argyle at the end of last season after guiding them to the play-offs, will be in charge of the team for Saturday’s match against Exeter City, after agreeing late yesterday to take the position on a short-term basis.

John arrives at Rodney Parade having already managed successfully in League Two, after guiding Chesterfield to champions of the division in 2011, and also spending just over two seasons at the helm at Plymouth Argyle, where he steered them from relegation candidates to promotion contenders.

The 51 year-old, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, has significant experience in the game, with a playing career that exceeded 725 appearances, spanning twenty-three years.

John enjoyed the fortune of playing in promotion winning sides at both Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers, and scored the winning goal in Wednesday's victory over Manchester United, to secure the League Cup in 1991.He also represented Ireland on thirty-four occasions, representing his country at both the 1990 and 1994 World Cup.

“Following the Supporters Trust taking control of the club in the past twenty-four hours, I am confident that if the players and fans work together we can help the squad climb the table, away from the relegation zone.”

“From my time at with Plymouth, Chesterfield and Oldham, I know what is required to succeed in this division” said the former Irish midfielder.

The board added; “The trust board are delighted that John has agreed to join us. He comes with an excellent track record and we would ask fans continue to support the club by coming along to John's first game against Exeter on Saturday, and of course the first game as a supporter owned community based club”.

John will be assisted by Byron Anthony and Michael Flynn for Saturday’s home game against Exeter City, before confirming his backroom staff in the near future.
