SEASON REVIEW: May

18 May 2015

Chris Gadsby takes a look at the solitary game in May

There was only one game of the season to go. Plymouth were in seventh on 68 points and a goal difference of 16, Luton were in eighth on 65 points and a goal difference of 8, and Newport were in ninth on 65 points and a goal difference of -2. For the Exiles to get the final spot they had to win and hope that Plymouth lost and that Luton failed to win. They also needed to overturn an 18 goal deficit.

Saturday 2ndMay – Oxford United (H) – Lost 1-0 – League Position: 9th

Both Plymouth and Luton won on final day meaning that Newport’s result was irrelevant in the end. It was a single goal from Kemar Roofe after half an hour that was enough to split the sides on final day and it meant that Newport have another season in League 2 in August. Mike Flynn was sent off on his 100th appearance for the club on the stroke of half time.

Round Up

There was only one game in May and Newport went into it knowing that a playoff place was unlikely. Nevertheless they improved on last year’s performance and if they were to continue on their current progression, next season the fans could be in for a battle for automatic promotion rather than a playoff fight.
