Thursday 30 APRIL 2009 Some more good news...another busy day...
I am very pleased to tell you that we have agreed with Glyn Thompson to stay with us next season. He has been a big part of the back 5, and we look forward to more clean sheets from him. Thanks for your time. Dean |

Thursday 30 APRIL 2009 Today's signings are....
I am pleased to announce this morning that i have agreed to keep Aaron Cook and Wayne Turk at Newport County for next season. Aaron and Wayne have both done fantastically well in their time with us. They both share the same attitude to winning football matches and being part of a team which as you all know is vital for us to succeed. Thanks for your time. Dean |

wednesday 29 APRIL 2009 Ian Hillier Departs........
After speaking with Ian Hillier, it has been decided by the two of us that Ian will be leaving Newport County. Ian is a friend of mine and I wish him and his family EVERY success in his new challenge ahead. Ian has worked extremely hard in his rehab from a nasty accident and this demonstrates his character I think I can wish him well from everyone at Newport County and look forward to see him playing again. Thanks for your time. Dean |

wednesday 29 APRIL 2009 Another signing.......
I am delighted to announce another signing today which confirms the recent speculation, with Scott Rogers agreeing to rejoin Newport County AFC for the forthcoming season. Scott did well for us during his loan spell and I am thrilled that he has decided that he wants to be a part of the future of this club. Keep watching enews and other club media for more player news in the coming 48 hours. Thanks for your time. Dean Scotty said. "Delighted to be back, I really enjoyed my time on loan last season. I have had the opportunity on numerous occasions to play against Newport County and have always been envious of their great fan base, even though opposition players experience hostility and to experience that from a different perspective and to be a part of it was fantastic. Newport County AFC is a great club with a huge potential and this was demonstrated by the great run of form towards the end of the season. The manager was a major factor in me signing for the next 12 months. Originally when I was offered the chance to go out on loan, following a period of injury I wasn't interested and was happy to bide my time at Bath until I could get back into the side, however when you are contacted by someone with the profile of Dean Holdsworth and asked if you would like to play for him, it is an easy decision to make. I watched Dean throughout his career and admired him and was really impressed with management style, so my decision to make the move permanent was an easy one". |

wednesday 29 APRIL 2009 New Signing
This morning , I am pleased to announce the signing of Dave Gilroy from Bath City. Dave has been a proven goal scorer in the Blue Square South and I'm looking forward to working with him. I'm sure that he will be a great addition to our squad. I am hoping in the next day or so there will be some more news for us Thanks for your time. Dean
Lisa asked Dave.
I was also very impressed
with the run of form that the lads put together towards the end of the
season and again I am excited at being a part of that”. |

SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2009 Blue Square South WELLING UNITED (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 2
County ended the season in style with a convincing victory at seventh placed Welling to confirm a final place in the Blue Square South top ten. However at the final whistle, the players and fans celebrated as if they had won promotion and the mood of optimism around the club is running very high indeed. Welling were denied a third minute goal by a fantastic clearance off the line from Danny Rose but from then on County started to look the better side and by the end their hosts were well beaten. Sam Foley netted both goals, the first in the 61st minute after clever work from Craig Reid, and the second in the 79th minute, direct from a free-kick after Reid had been tripped by Tony Sinclair. There were good performances all over the park from County, with the large visiting contingent turning Welling into a Welsh colony with the volume of their support.

friDAY 24 APRIL 2009 An invitation
On Monday 11th May 2009 at 7.00pm Newport County AFC will be inviting everyone associated with the Club to the launch of the new structure and will explain the link between Supporters, The Trust, BarAmber, Supporters Groups, Volunteers, Sponsors and Directors to take the Club forward over the next few years. There are some very exciting developments that will include a total restructure of the Clubs operating structure and finances. The budget will be increased for next season and the playing squad will be larger and stronger. This new business plan has been in development over the past 4-6 weeks in readiness for the new season and has been accepted enthusiastically by all who have seen the 'draft' versions. It will give all supporters total transparency on the finances of the Club and Structure that is in place to take Newport County AFC into the BSP and hopefully beyond. We invite you to join us in BarAmber for an evening dedicated to the future of YOUR Club and to be one of the first to hear the new Business Plan, including new players, training facilities, kit deals, friendlies etc. We will deliver a full presentation, make information available and welcome questions.
Thanks for your time. |

thursDAY 23 APRIL 2009 Cockers Signs......
I am delighted to announce that this afternoon Paul 'Cockers' Cochlin has agreed to stay at the club next season. I am delighted to add Paul to the growing list of players ready to commit to Newport County AFC for 09/10 and both Paul and I firmly believe that his game has improved since his return to the club earlier this season, however we both believe there is more to come from Paul, and the team. Keep checking into enews for more exciting announcements soon Thanks for your time Dean |

SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2009 2008-09 PRESENTATION EVENING
BarAmber was packed as players and fans enjoyed a terrific evening following County’s final home game of a campaign that improved with age. Steve Horton’s superb video of the season had everybody enthralled and captured most of the highlights including the match of the season when Chelmsford were fortunate to return home with only a 3-1 beating.
The Supporters Club opened the presentations with Craig Reid collecting their Player of the Year trophy, while Plymouth based Dave Tanner was a popular winner of the Supporter of the Year award, with Danny Williams named as Young Supporter of the Year. Danny Rose won the trophy for the young player, under 21, making most first team appearances, while Glyn Thompson was named Away Player of the Year from the votes of fans returning on Supporters Club coach travel.
Sportsmad’s John Whatmore’s Player of the Year award based on man of the match presentations was won by Craig Reid before the club awards which were as follows:
Goal of the Season (chosen by Dean Holdsworth) won jointly by · Danny Rose (Weston away) · Craig Reid (Chelmsford home - the second of the three) · Sam Foley (St Albans away)
Young Player of the Year · Scott Armitage
Top Scorer · Craig Reid

SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1 THURROCK (0) 1
County met their nemesis in their final home game of the season with Thurrock looking to continue their perfect record at Spytty Park by making it five wins in five visits. The outcome could yet have a bearing on Thurrock’s status next season; though they will feel they should have picked up all three points from a jaded looking County. The game was not helped by a very poor refereeing performance from Anthony Serrano who stopped play far too often and irritated everyone with his fussiness. Thurrock shaded the first half but few chances were created and when Lee Flynn fired home a free-kick via the upright with nine minutes remaining it looked as if the points were returning to Essex. But County’s very own Roy of the Rovers, the immensely popular Craig Reid produced a customary moment of magic to equalise with five minutes left to rescue a point.

friDAY 17 APRIL 2009 REIDY SIGNS FOR 2 YEARS
It is the news we have all been
waiting for, but this morning we can confirm that we have signed Craig Reid
for another 2 year term with the County. Both myself and Craig are delighted to be working together for the next 2 years and are as excited as everyone about the prospect of taking this club up to the Conference. Craig knows how ambitious we are and simply wants to be part of it ! It has been a great week behind the scenes for the club, and before tomorrow's game we will have more great news about next year's squad which we are finalising today ! For more information see tomorrow's Argus and for a full interview with Craig ! See you all tomorrow Dean |

tuesDAY 14 APRIL 2009 Thanks for your support
It was pleasing to see a larger crowd than usual supporting us yesterday when we entertained Team Bath. Thank you for your support and I hope that you all enjoyed a very entertaining match which provided us with another 3 points and a place in the top ten of the table. I was delighted with the overall team performance yesterday and I thought that the four goals were the best that I have seen in anyone match in a long time. If you weren't at the game they are worth a look on the website. It was another solid performance and I hope that we can continue to build on this going into our final two games of the season, Saturday against Thurrock and the following week against Welling. I was disappointed with the two goals that were conceded late on and we will work on this in training this week. Many of you will have seen Kevin Cooper and Glyn Thompson at the game yesterday and the news on their injuries is as follows. Kev will be out for at least four months with ligament damage to the ankle and the foot and this is a blow to the squad. However, the news on Thommo is more encouraging. The swelling to his face is going down, and the bruising is developing. We will monitor his progress this week and I will update you on Friday. Look forward to seeing another good crowd for our final home match of the season and to seeing as many of you as possible at the presentation evening.

MONDAY 13 APRIL 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (3) 4 TEAM BATH (0) 2
A terrific encounter with a liberal sprinkling of superb goals, the second and final visit of Team Bath to Newport Stadium will be fondly remembered. The merits of the participation of a student team in the football pyramid have filled message boards, but fanless Team Bath have always played entertaining football and, purely for the quality they provide, they will be missed. County’s first half performance was full of creative attacking play with Wayne Turk hitting a superb 14th minute pass for Craig Reid to nip in with his 20th goal of the season, and Turk himself struck a special goal in the 20th minute, his first for County. Paul Cochlin headed the third in the 28th minute from a Danny Rose corner and it was Rose himself who hit a spectacular fourth after 56 minutes only to be cautioned by jobsworth referee Neil Radford for celebrating a goal which lit up the Stadium! To their immense credit Team Bath came back with a header by skipper Gary Warren on 72 minutes and they had Newport nerves jangling when substitute Tom Piotrowski scored a second with a minute remaining of normal time. You could have heard a pin drop!

SunDAY 12 APRIL 2009 The Easter Weekend
Started off positively with a good 3 points at Dorchester yesterday. It was a good all round team performance and I was delighted with everyone's contribution, including the 150+ travelling supporters who once again made themselves heard. As those of you who travelled to the game or tuned into the internet radio will be aware that following a very brave piece of goalkeeping, Glyn Thompson suffered a facial injury. Having received treatment Thommo said that he was okay to continue and did so. However, after the game Glyn did not feel at all well and arrangements were made for him to attend his local hospital where early indications are that he has not suffered a fracture, however there is still alot of swelling to the face, and bruising has started to develop. Having spoken to Thommo this morning, he is feeling very sore and reports a lot of discomfort. Glyn will definitely miss tomorrow's match against Team Bath and we will obviously be monitoring the situation closely and will update you on progress during the week. Tomorrow we take on Team Bath with a 3.00pm Kick Off and I am hoping that the lovely sunny weather will continue and see us have a bumper crowd for our penultimate game of the season. Thanks for your time Dean |

SATURDAY 11 APRIL 2009 Blue Square South DORCHESTER TOWN (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
Another away game produced another 1-0 victory for County as the trip to Dorchester yielded its customary three points. In an entertaining game, County should have held a first half advantage but squandered some good chances, though Dorchester had started strongly and County were grateful for a goal line clearance from Danny Rose to deny Roy O’Brien in the first minute, while Glyn Thompson charged off his line to stop Jacob Erskine four minutes later. Sam Foley had a couple of great chances and left his strike partner Craig Reid looking angry when he tried to go it alone but failed to beat Gareth Stewart in the home goal in the seventh minute with the top scorer free in front of an empty net. Magpies striker Phil Walsh missed a great chance to score against his old club early in the second half, but then floored keeper Glyn Thompson who needed extensive treatment before being able to resume. A long throw from Kris Leek produced the only goal in the 78th minute when a header from Martyn Giles provided the chance for Reid to do what Reid loves to do and slam home the winning goal. The Amber Army was delighted, as was the goal machine!

SUNDAY 05 APRIL 2009 THE NEWPORT COUNTY HALL OF FAME
A Newport County Hall of Fame was launched on 3 April 2009 with the iconic star of the late 70’s and early 80’s, Tommy Tynan, having the honour of being the first inductee.
Andrew Taylor explained, “For some time I have felt that we needed to mark the achievements of some of our greatest stars and had in mind putting on events which would enable us to do this – whilst also generating some much welcome money for the club. Bringing Tommy up to sign copies of his book ‘The Original Football Idol’ written by my friend, Plymouth fan Ryan Danes, seemed to be the perfect opportunity. |
![]() |
|
The intention is that each year there will be a couple of events staged on a similar basis with an opportunity for us to not only remember the exploits of club legends but to talk to them about their memories first hand. ‘Hall of Famers’ will have left an indelible mark on the history of the club and their names will be celebrated on an Honours Board in BarAmber. We will also at future events announce a Posthumous Award.
“The order in which they will be selected will have more to do with who I can get to come when, than any sense of importance – after all anyone worthy of inclusion will be a real star in our eyes!”
Nominations will be considered by a small committee comprising Andrew, Tony Ambrosen, Ray Taylor and Mike Everett. If at any time you want to put a name forward then please email andrew.taylor470@btinternet.com and ideally give your reasons as to why they should be included.
Commenting on the selection of Tynan as the first inductee, Andrew added, “I have no doubt that if we had a poll of our most iconic star then Tommy would, despite some exceptionally worthy competitors, come out on top. Given the reception that Tommy received from around 140 supporters who contributed so well to a marvellous night, I am even more convinced that his choice as the first in the Hall of Fame could not have been bettered!”
Tommy’s induction to the Hall of Fame brought congratulations and tributes from his managers Len Ashurst and Colin Addison and captain, Keith Oakes. Ashurst commented, “A part from my book says it all. ‘Another signing for a second time around was Liverpool born centre forward Tommy Tynan, a gem of a player with a fiery temperament. I can see his pet lip now when he couldn’t get his own way. In addition to the transfer fee I had to pay a huge taxi bill to Lincoln City which Tynan had inadvertently run up when travelling from Sheffield to Lincoln; an accounting error at the club caused this to run to four figures. Tommy was an unlucky pawn in the professional soccer machine, he did not quite achieve the heights his talent deserved. I had first signed Tommy from Liverpool whilst I was managing Sheffield Wednesday. Bob Paisley informed me after a reserve game when sitting in that famous boot room (what a privilege to be there) that he lacked pace. I have to say he had everything else and could score goals. I seem to remember that master of Anfield Kenny Dalglish was not the quickest either – that is the greatest compliment I could pay Tommy Tynan.’ Congratulate Tommy and send him the best from the North East.”
Addison added, “Tommy was a scallywag Scouser who scored all those goals! A loveable rogue and I liked him a lot. He scored for fun and in 1982/83 Tom and John Aldridge were unstoppable scoring 55 between them. I loved working with him and was saddened that I had to sell him to Plymouth. With an extra yard of pace he would have been a regular Premiership player. Tommy is a great choice as the first Hall of Famer – send him and everyone my warmest regards – Oh and Tommy – give Andrew that tenner you’ve owed me for 26 years!”
And from Keith Oakes, “Tom was one of the best strikers I played with or against and should have played at a higher level. I honestly believe that with today’s training methods and lifestyles he would have. Tommy’s a good bloke who I got on well with and without doubt a great choice for the Hall of Fame. Congratulations Tom.”
Tommy was taken aback at the reaction and honoured to be the first in the Hall of Fame. “I am truly overwhelmed by tonight. It was 26 years ago that I left – something I was very sad about but I had no choice as the club would have folded. It turned out well and we are settled in Plymouth but I love Newport and its people and always will and tonight reminds me why when I see the warmth and humour of everyone here. What has surprised me more is the number of young people here who weren’t born when I played! I have been meeting three generations of the same family and the youngest seems to be as proud about what we did in the late 70’s and early 80’s as their grandfather and father! It is very humbling and a real privilege for me to share tonight with them. Wonderful also to see people who I’ve not seen for many years and great to catch up with John Relish and Jimmy Goodfellow.”
Andrew revealed that the next event will be to induct the man who brought Tynan – and so much success to Newport - Len Ashurst. “I am delighted that Len Ashurst has agreed to come down at the beginning of next season, when he will also be signing copies of his excellent book ‘Left Back in Time’, which was brought out on his 70th birthday on 10 March.” |

SATURDAY 04 APRIL 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 4 FISHER ATHLETIC (0) 0
For the second successive home game, County fans were treated to a 4-0 result. This was rather more palatable however than the setback against Bath City and it was as one-sided as it gets. It took County less than five minutes to get their noses in front when a Danny Rose free-kick clipped off the head of both Martyn Giles and a Fisher defender, with the consensus of the dodgy goals panel being that Giles should be credited with the goal. In the 13th minute Kevin Cooper was subjected to a shocking challenge from Fisher’s Chris Saunders and both players’ participation was ended with Cooper departing on a stretcher while the visiting player was shown a red card by referee Brett Huxtable, whose handling of the game earned widespread praise. County squandered chances to add to the advantage but within 25 seconds of the restart home anxiety was banished by a well-crafted goal, created by Rose and Sam Foley and finished by Craig Reid. County played some attractive football and Foley smashed home the third in the 72nd minute while Rose took his tally for the season into double figures two minutes later. |

Thursday 2 April 2009 WALES 1 SCOTLAND 0 Carnegie Centenary Shield Under 18 Schools International At Port Talbot Town FC
Newport County AFC Youth team and Hartridge High School made a huge contribution to a thrilling success for Wales, with six Hartridge Academy members in the home squad.
Central defender Gary Colborne captained the Welsh side and he was joined at the heart of the rearguard by Ben Evans who came on as substitute for the last half hour while Ricky Manship played in midfield. Scott Armitage and match winner Luke Prosser led the Welsh attack while first year Academy member Josh Brown was in reserve.
Colborne gave an inspiring performance in front of Coleg Menai keeper Liam Shanahan whose handling was excellent throughout, and he hit the bar with two headers as well as nodding the ball on for Prosser to head the game’s only goal on 52 minutes.
In the latter stages the Scots, most of whose players are on the books of Scottish League sides, applied tremendous pressure but they could not get past the determined Welsh battlers at the back.
Armitage, whose pace caused the Scots problems, was substituted near the end following a knee injury.
Wales: Liam Shanahan (Coleg Menai), Aaron Pritchard (Llandrillo College), Matthew Whatley (Ysgol Brynmawr) (Ben Evans (Hartridge) 61), Ben Davies (Ysgol Ystalyfera), Gary Colborne (Hartridge), Ceri Morgan (Hawthorne High), Ricky Manship (Hartridge), Caio Iwan (Ysgol Syr Huw Owen), Nathan Logan (Gorseinon College) (Declan John (Swansea College) 71), Luke Prosser (Hartridge), Scott Armitage (Hartridge) (Michael Cronshaw (Connah’s Quay High) 83). |

SATURDAY 28 MARCH 2009 Blue Square South BOGNOR REGIS TOWN (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
The large group of County fans who decided to give the Wales game a miss and travel to Bognor will feel they made a wise decision as they were able to celebrate a victory in an absorbing contest in which both sides played rather better than their respective league positions would have indicated. There was little to separate the two teams until the 56th minute when Dean Holdsworth sent on Craig Reid, deciding sensibly that 35 minutes from the club’s top scorer in the later stages, was a better investment than 65 minutes at the start and risking fatigue after his troubling hamstring injury. Reid did not disappoint, taking seven minutes to net the only goal of the game when he supplied the finish from a pass from his friend and former Cheltenham team mate Sam Foley. It was enough to ensure County completed the double over the Rocks who now need an impossible sequence of results if they are to overhaul Dorchester and escape the bottom three. There are many who hope this gallant club are able to retain their place in Blue Square South.

friday 27 MARCH 2009 Congratulations to.....
Gary Colborne These lads are in the Wales Schools Squad to take on Scotland next Thursday 2nd April 2009 at Port Talbot, KO 7.00pm These lads are a credit to the Newport County AFC Academy and to Glyn Jones, James Rowberry & the team. Gary, Ricky & Scott have all been first team squad members this season and I have been impressed by their enthusiasm and commitment. Ben Evans is currently playing for Clevedon Town but we are monitoring his progress closely, whilst Josh and Luke are instrumental members of the NCAFC Youth Team and certainly two to watch for the future. It would be great to see some County fans at the match next week to cheer on our lads. I have been asked by Lisa to remind those people who have committed to purchasing tickets for the Tommy Tynan evening that payment is now required. If you have not as yet paid for your tickets please contact Lis on 07801 710804. There are still a limited number of tickets available for this event so it is not too late to book yours to see the legend that is Tommy Tynan! Hope to see you all at Bognor tomorrow.
Thanks for your time Dean |

tuesday 24 MARCH 2009 Back on Track
As you know I don't usually like to single out any players but it would be remiss of me not to mention the super strike from Sam Foley that gave us our goal. This was Sam's first goal for the county and what a goal ~ If you get opportunity to look at the website have a look at it on the video clips section. The smaller than usual travelling contingent certainly made their voices heard and it was good to see those amber shirts on display. Your support as always is greatly appreciated by us all and it was good to chat with some of you in the bar after the game. It was also good to meet the two guests (John and Terry) who took advantage of the fund raising Iniative and travelled with the team. Both had a great day and would recommend this experience to fans. There are currently two places available for Saturday's trip to Bognor Regis Town and to book these please contact Mike Everett on 07889 359100. The four seats for the final trip of the season to Welling United will be offered as prizes in our End of Season raffle. Tickets will be available from Saturday onwards and are priced at just £1. Tickets can be purchased from Lisa at forthcoming matches and the lucky four winners will be drawn in BarAmber following our final home match of the season on Saturday 18th April 2009. Look forward to seeing you at Bognor on Saturday.
Thanks for your time Dean |

SATURDAY 21 MARCH 2009 Blue Square South ST ALBANS CITY (1) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
County went some way to banishing the Bath City blues with a massively improved performance to earn a fully deserved point against a decent St Albans outfit. They were unrecognisable from the side of three days earlier and all the players can take some pride from their display as they came from behind and will probably feel they should have had a win to celebrate on the long journey home. St Albans were first to strike when Simon Martin pounced on a County error and scored with ease in the 15th minute. A minute later it could have been 2-0 when Glyn Thompson saved well from Hassan Sulaiman but that was almost the last we saw of St Albans as an attacking force. Sam Foley was brought down by James Fisher four minutes into the second half but Danny Rose did not make good contact with his penalty and Lee Butcher saved easily diving to his left. But County continued to pose problems for the home defence who conceded their first goal in almost 10 hours of Blue Square football when Foley struck with venom to fire into the top corner of the net in the 79th minute.

Friday 20 MARCH 2009 Kevin Stephens
As you will all know by now via the press and other media sources Kev Stephens has, by request left the club. An allegation of racism has been documented. Newport County will not tolerate any such behaviour, and any person(s) found guilty of such will be banned from the football club with immediate effect. We will do our very best to prevent this allegation arising again. Such behaviour will not help us attract players to the club nor will it promote players wanting to stay. Kev Stephens was a popular player at the club in and out of the dressing room, his loyalty and commitment has never been questioned and everyone associated with the club from Directors, Management, Staff and Players are upset to see him leave under such awful circumstances and we thank him for his contributions during his time with us and wish him well for his future. I am still disappointed with the result and performance on Wednesday. It was same squad that outplayed Braintree and won at Hampton. We as a group of people now have to roll up our sleeves and work hard to put things right, starting Saturday. We have a tough game at St Albans and we need everyone to pull together. Tom Lyons Tom has been training with us, he has signed for us and despite speculation he is not on loan. Tom has been working hard to get himself up to match fitness and we hope in the next couple of weeks he can be involved for us to have a look at him. He can only do himself justice if he's able to match the fitness on the pitch, his attitude to training has been excellent.

WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 BATH CITY (2) 4
The vast majority of a crowd of 734 went home feeling short changed by County whose performance was certainly their most unacceptable of a disappointing season. From the time Stuart Douglas struck the first of his hat-trick goals in the 14th minute the points were destined to go to the visitors who efforts could not be faulted, but they will never be presented an easier success than this. Kevin Stephens fouled Douglas and though Glyn Thompson saved his spot-kick the City striker followed up to score the rebound. Douglas netted his second four minutes later when the County defence opened up obligingly, and an effort from Danny Rose just past the post in the 20th minute was the best County could manage. Darren Edwards dispelled any thoughts of an unlikely comeback when he headed the third in the 56th minute after a Chris Holland volley had been well stopped by Thompson who was again left exposed as Douglas completed his well deserved trio of goals six minutes later. Bath were not flattered by the winning margin, but it has to be said that an unbalanced and shapeless County offered no contest, and unsurprisingly, the stadium had largely emptied long before the end.

FriDAY 13 MARCH 2009 FRANK BATTERHAM
Everyone associated with Newport County AFC will be sad to hear of the passing of veteran lifelong fan Frank after a long illness bravely fought. County matches at home and away will never be quite the same without Frank who also served his country with distinction in the Second World War. His enthusiastic encouragement for our players and tactful advice for match officials will be sadly missed. There will be a minute's silence in his memory before our home match against Bath City on Wednesday 18 March. |
|
Thursday 12 MARCH 2009 ASHLEY VICKERS
We extend our best wishes to Ashley on his appointment as player coach at Dorchester Town. His stay at Spytty was relatively short, but Ashley made many friends at Newport County AFC and was one of the most popular players to wear the amber shirt in recent years. He always showed exemplary commitment to the cause wherever he was asked to play and his presence around the club was much appreciated. We will be pleased to see him again when we visit Dorchester in league action on 11 April. |

SATURDAY 07 MARCH 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 2 BRAINTREE TOWN (0) 1
One of the more disappointing first half performances of the season was followed by a second half of passing and movement that thrilled the crowd and was described by Dean Holdsworth as “the best football I have seen anywhere this season. It was a joy to watch.” Skipping over the opening period then, Braintree took the lead in the 52nd minute when Kevin Stephens lost the ball and Danny Hockton accepted the chance to lob it over Glyn Thompson. Cue the introduction of Craig Reid and Kevin Cooper and it was suddenly a different game. A neat pass from Reid sent Foley clear in the 62nd minute and when he was tripped by Billy Burgess, Reid scored from the penalty spot. Paul Cochlin headed the winner from a Danny Rose corner in the 80th minute and Braintree were probably the happier side to hear the final whistle as County played exhibition football. The fans loved it!

TUESDAY 3 MARCH 2009 Blue Square South HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1
A patched-up County produced their best away performance of the season to end second placed Hampton’s nine match winning sequence and become the first side this season to complete the double over the Beavers. Single goal successes are never exactly comfortable but there was no doubt who was the better side on the night and Hampton, despite enjoying plenty of second half possession when the wind was at their backs, created little in the way of goal scoring opportunities. The game started ominously for County, who were looking to end a four match losing run, as Kieran Knight was close with a second minute effort. The only goal came from a fine 35th minute effort from defender turned striker Paul Cochlin who displayed a sure touch before half volleying Danny Rose’s cross past Matt Lovett in the home goal. It was a goal County deserved on the balance of play and despite Hampton’s help from the elements after the break, they laboured in vain against a confident County defence. |

TUESDAY 3 MARCH 2009 What a night!
Following on from a very disappointing result and display on Saturday, on the back of four successive defeats, the lads response last night was superb, and they did everything that I asked of them. With Hampton second in the league I am sure many people had written off our chances of getting anything from last nights' game, however we were, as a team confident going into the game and came away with all three points ~ that's six points this year against Hampton! It was an absolutely dreadful night with strong winds and lashing rain (perhaps the conditions helped us as we are used to playing at Spytty!), and I would like to express my sincere thanks again to the dedicated band of die hard supporters, approximately 40 in total who made the journey midweek and whose vocal support was brilliant. Also thank you to the band of 20 or so Wimbledon fans who had come along to cheer us on against their local rivals. Now to Saturday when we take on Braintree at home, another vital game with Braintree being one place above us in the league on the same points. Please make every effort to make this game on Saturday and give us your support. Your County needs you! I have been absolutely astounded by the fund raising that you our supporters have done since our plea in January to find the funds to keep Aaron Cook & Wayne Turk. In total over £4,000 has been raised in January/February and this is amazing. Whilst Aaron & Wayne are now permanant members of the squad we still have loan players and there is still a need to continue to fund raise to ensure that we can keep Sam Foley and look to further strengthen the squad with loan signings until the end of the season. There are a number of ways in which you can support us in this, for example there are still a number of the limited edition white shirts available for sale in the club shop with £10 from every sale going to the loan player fund and there are still a few seats available for team travel until the end of the season. For further details on these fund raising opportunities please contact Lisa on 07801 710804 or Mike on 07889 359100. The recent press release about the way in which supporters groups led by the Supporters Trust will work with the Directors for next season was very welcome and I look forward to working with these groups to take Newport County AFC forward, but in the meantime we need to focus our efforts on keeping our current squad for the remainder of the season and your support in doing this is vital.
Thanks for your time and your
support Dean |

SATURDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2009 Blue Square South HAYES & YEADING UNITED (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
County are now nervously looking over their shoulders at the teams below them after being well beaten by Hayes & Yeading for the second time this season. There could be no consolation in the fact that a clear foul on Aaron Cook preceded the second goal by Josh Scott on 52 minutes because the hosts created enough chances to have at least matched their 5-1 winning margin at Newport three months ago. Again Hayes & Yeading looked as good as any side in Blue Square South and they were superior to County all over the park, several times opening up the centre of the Exiles defence with one precise ball forward. Glyn Thompson darted to the edge of the penalty area to try to get to a ball from Esmond James after 11 minutes but was beaten by the impressive Scott who crossed to give Ram Marwa the simplest of tasks to head home. Craig Reid’s comeback lasted just 45 minutes with the disappointed County top scorer withdrawn as a precaution after suffering cramp.

FRIDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2009 Paul Bignot returns
I am delighted to announce the return to Newport County AFC of Paul Bignot. Paul was an important part of the team when he was here and I was keen to keep him at Spytty Park but this was not to be at the time for financial reasons and Paul returned to Kidderminster Harriers. Paul has now been released by Kidderminster Harriers and is a free agent. Paul is delighted to be returning to the club and pending all the usual registrations and international clearances, he will go straight into contention of tomorrow's vital encounter with Hayes & Yeading. Tomorrow will see us wear the new White kit for the first time, please remember that this is a limited edition which has been put on sale to raise much needed funds for the 'loan' players fund, more on that one next week. I have been asked by the BarAmber Committee to remind you that you can watch Wales take on France on the big screen at BarAmber, free admission, free curry at half time and all beer at £2 a pint. Please support BarAmber to support the team. Thanks for your time. Dean |

WEDNESDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 EASTLEIGH (0) 1
It was always going to be a tall order for Dean Holdsworth’s patched up side to turn over in-form Eastleigh, probably the only Blue Square South team who the Harlem Globetrotters would not look down on. With just two defenders and a goalkeeper on the bench, and a centre half at centre forward, County shaded the first half but cruelly, they narrowly failed to score from their best chance when Jason Matthews pushed Paul Cochlin’s header onto the underside of the bar in the 42nd minute. How the County Gaffer must have envied his old mate Ian Baird when the Eastleigh boss could afford to have feared forwards Matt Groves and Bertie Brayley on the bench! The game’s moment of outstanding quality in the 52nd minute fittingly provided the only goal when after a long throw from Steve Clark on the right, Ashley Carew took a touch and curled a delightful shot from the edge of the area just beyond Glyn Thompson into the top corner of the net. County finished the game strongly with former Eastleigh defender Ashley Vickers pushed up front in place of the gallant Cochlin, but they could not quite grab an equaliser though they won a deserved ovation from the smallest league crowd at Spytty for some time.

SATURDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2009 Blue Square South BROMLEY (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
For Bath City read Bromley! For the second successive away game, County were fortunate to trail by only a single goal at the interval, but proceeded to dominate the second half only to lose the game by conceding a poor goal a minute from time. Bromley skipper Rob Gillman was not tracked at a seventh minute Ryan Hall corner and with Glyn Thompson unable to get off his line, the defender’s header thumped into the back of the net. County failed to make forward possession stick in the first half and were a little fortunate not to concede a second goal when Ashley Vickers checked Warren McBean on the edge of the area but the free-kick was squandered. The second half was much better from County’s perspective and birthday boy Danny Rose celebrated his 21st with a 57th minute penalty after Sam Foley was fouled by Aaron Dalhouse. However, despite the running and effort of substitute Scott Armitage, County lacked the finishing touch, and dreadful defending was punished by Hall who produced a good finish. So a match which should have ended all square resulted in another defeat for County who cannot complain because it was their own error which cost them.

saturDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2009 FIVE PLAYERS PICKED FOR WALES
Newport County AFC and Hartridge Football Academy are proud to announce that five of their number have been chosen for the squad to represent Wales in the Centenary Shield Under 18 Schools International against the Republic of Ireland at Wexford on Thursday 26 February. Central defender Gary Colbourne, the versatile Ben Evans, midfielder Ricky Manship plus strikers Scott Armitage and Luke Prosser have all been selected while right-back Josh Brown has been named on stand-by. |

TUESDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2009 Scott Rogers Recalled
Late on Saturday night we received the call that Bath City have evoked the clause within our agreement to recall Scott Rogers with immediate effect. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott for his contribution whilst at the club and to wish him well for the rest of the season. As you will be aware we have several injuries at present and are currently assessing the situation ahead of this weekend's game against Bromley. I will bring you an update on the injuries later in the week.
Thanks for your time. Dean |

saturDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 MAIDENHEAD UNITED (0) 1
Valentine visitors Maidenhead won no friends but they returned with all three points so they may consider the ends justified the means, though football would not exist as a spectacle if all games were played like this. Referee Mark Pottage also needs to take a long hard look in his mirror after a display which left many questions unanswered. Richard Pacquette decided the game in the Magpies’ favour with a 66th minute opportunist strike to punish a hesitant defence and it was just about the only threat Maidenhead mustered all afternoon. Nine minutes later, Pottage astonished the crowd by brandishing a red card at Steve Jenkins for a late challenge on Ashley Smith which clearly left the Maidenhead player with a nasty injury though it was not malicious. In contrast in the 83rd minute the official showed only a yellow card to Bobby Behzadi for an absolutely brutal challenge on Kris Leek which launched him into the air and ripped open the County player’s leg. The visitors left with the victory and the referee departed the scene to a chorus of jeers which was richly deserved on a day when football was an even bigger loser than County.

WEDNESDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 2 BOGNOR REGIS TOWN (1) 1
County lifted themselves into the top 10 in Blue Square South for the first time this season, and now stand just one place lower than last term’s final resting place. Success against Bognor was never as straightforward as most would have anticipated, and for that, Bognor can take credit. It started well enough with Danny Rose giving County a 15th minute lead after Rocks keeper Anthony Ender had failed to hold a Craig Reid effort. But Bognor came back strongly and Patrick Cox was not picked up at a Ruben French corner and powered home his header for a 22nd minute reply. County were a shade fortunate to go in level at half-time as Bognor, under new boss Darin Killpartrick, maintained the finest traditions of Jack Pearce and played flowing football that was very attractive to watch. County reasserted their authority after the break but had only a suspiciously offside looking goal from Paul Cochlin after 57 minutes to show for it. However, as Dean Holdsworth said after the game: “A win is a win!” A disappointing crowd of just 618 turned up, but Saturday’s visit of Maidenhead deserves a much bigger turn out.

SATURDAY 31 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South BATH CITY (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
So the run ends at Twerton Park, a ground which has never been a particularly happy one for County but few of the squad involved in this defeat had been around for past league losses there. The timing of the winning goal was sickening for County because there was no way back once Chris Holland made his 90th minute strike, but football is a 90 minute game, and County’s concentration seemed to falter in defending the free-kick which produced the winner. Bath had been much the better side in the first half, taking the lead through Darren Edwards in the sixth minute and they had enough possession to build on this advantage. County were furious when Paul Cochlin was wrestled to the ground in the 23rd minute but no penalty was forthcoming and the right words needed to be chosen at half-time. Whatever was said, County looked refreshed and Kris Leek set up a chance which Craig Reid finished emphatically two minutes into the second half and County looked the better side for a spell, but Bath finished the stronger looking combination and a very large proportion of the 1,137 crowd went home disappointed.

FRIDAY 30 JANUARY 2009 BEN EVANS
Ben, who has been in outstanding form for the youth team both in defence and midfield, has joined Clevedon Town of the BGB (Southern) League Premier Division on a loan arrangement until the end of the season. He made his debut in central defence on 27 January when the Seasiders secured an impressive 3-2 victory at home to Chippenham Town.
Dean Holdsworth said: "Ben is a promising player. The move will enable him to play some senior competitive football and is an important part of his development." |

WEDNESDAY 28 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1 WESTON-SUPER-MARE (0) 0
The run continued for Dean Holdsworth’s County against a Weston side who gave everything to upset the applecart. Chances were at a premium at both ends and County found it difficult to make first half headway with Weston’s central midfield duo of Ashan Holgate and Darren Mullings playing key roles as the visitors edged the game in terms of possession. Aaron Cook and Paul Cochlin stood firm though and a 36th minute effort from Weston’s Manny Williams blocked by Glyn Thompson was just about the only real chance created by either side before the break. Holgate, who played once for County two seasons ago, was stretchered off after falling heavily just before half-time following a late challenge from Scott Rogers, and there was concern that he may have suffered a fractured ankle. County simply had to improve in the second half and they moved the ball better on a very poor playing service, making the breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Skipper Cook has already become a very important player with his defensive leadership and he struck the underside of the bar from a Danny Rose corner. Cochlin headed the rebound into the back of the net to make certain but the officials confirmed that Cook’s shot had crossed the line. County then edged the game with Reid denied by a superb save from Ryan Northmore two minutes after the goal, and though Weston could not get back into the match, the final whistle was greeted with relief by an encouraging home crowd of 913. |

Wednesday 28 JANUARY 2009 Tonight's Weston-super-Mare Game

The following forms of I D will be accepted: * corus photo I D badge * wage slip (within past six months) * If producing the wage slip you will also need to bring a photo form of I D i.e. Passport, driving licence We regret that no I D as above then no entry. SATURDAY 24 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 3 BASINGSTOKE TOWN (0) 0
Dean Holdsworth declared himself as “almost in danger of being happy” as his improving side made a further stride upwards with a comprehensive victory against plucky but outclassed opponents. Kaid Mohamed, making his County debut, was tripped in the first few minutes by Adam Aimable but referee Justin Comley, making his first visit to Spytty, failed to award a fairly obvious penalty and County had to weather some brief pressure from the visitors before Aaron Cook gave them an interval lead with a header which appeared to catch keeper Ross Kitteridge unsighted. The second half was pretty much one way traffic with Robbie Watkins conceding two desperate free-kicks but only collecting one yellow card. Danny Rose fired home the first in his inimitable style from 30 yards in the 64th minute and set up the second for Craig Reid with six minutes left. |

tuesday 20 JANUARY 2009 Agreement reached with Forest Green Rovers
I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with Forest Green Rovers for Kaid Mohammed to join us on a months loan. Whilst there is still away to go in terms of completing this agreement (loan agreements, league registration and of course International Clearance), I felt it was important to update you as soon as possible. Subject to everything been completed successfully Kaid will go into contention for Saturday's game against Basingstoke. Thank you to all those supporters who made the relatively short journey to Worcester last night and witnessed yet another solid squad performance. Thanks for your time Dean |

MONday 19 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South WORCESTER CITY (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
Another away day and another decent result for County when, despite some tired legs after two trips in three days, they finished the stronger side and could well have been celebrating a double over Worcester. A draw was probably just about the right result as the game ebbed and flowed first one way then the other and though it finished goalless, there were chances and near misses at both ends. County suffered a potentially serious blow after 11 minutes when, after falling heavily, Martyn Giles suffered back pains which prevented him continuing and Ashley Vickers stepped into the fray as possibly the tallest left-back ever to play for the club. Amazingly however, Worcester’s tactics appeared to be to hump long balls downfield rather than exploit a player playing out of position and young Ash was a hero for County. For the purist County certainly had the edge with the best moment of the game coming from an excellent ball from Scott Rogers to Craig Reid in the 77th minute. Reid made perfect contact but his shot rebounded off the post then rolled along the line to the great relief of Danny McDonnell in the home goal. Worcester had their moments also, not least when Glyn Thompson raced off his line to rob Matt Dinsmore in the 15th minute, but at the end the Amber Army, whose support was magnificent both in numbers and noise, had to settle for a point and as Dean Holdsworth said, to be disappointed with a draw at Worcester shows the progress made recently.

Saturday 17 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South FISHER ATHLETIC (1) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 3
Two weeks after a very comfortable 3-1 home win against league leaders Chelmsford City, County cruised to success by the same score and in doing so sent Fisher to the foot of the table. The London side, whose supporters were heavily outnumbered in a 249 crowd, snatched a 25th minute lead against the run of play when Gary Wharton produced a fine volley to finish good approach play by central defender Cedric Abraham. But County, with loan signings Steve Butterworth and Scott Rogers making their debuts in midfield, always looked likely to come back and they levelled in the 32nd minute when Kris Leek picked out the run of Butterworth with a pass of pinpoint accuracy and the winger hit a superb first time effort into the net. Craig Reid gave County the lead from the penalty spot four minutes later after Abraham handled and the destination of the points was never in the remotest of doubt. Martyn Giles started and finished the move which competed the scoring in the 47th minute with his first goal for County, and Butterworth was again involved playing a perfect pass into the path of the left-back. County were able to close out the game by retaining possession on a difficult pitch which had absorbed some very heavy rain during the week.

friday 16 JANUARY 2009 Welcome back
To Kevin Stephens, who has agreed to rejoin the club. Many of you will recall that Kev was always a part of my longer term plans but due to circumstances (distance, travelling partners released etc) it was felt that it was not viable or cost effective for Kev to travel to Wales two to three times a week on his own and therefore reluctantly he was released. However, with Frazer and Steve now travelling from the London area to training and home games the situation is viable and I am delighted to welcome Kev back and I know that he is very much looking forward to coming back. As with Scott Rogers, subject to international clearance, both will go straight into contention for tomorrows' vital game at Fisher. Hopefully I will bring you further news later today.
Thanks for your time Dean |

tuesday 13 JANUARY 2009 Farewell to Ade
Last week Weston-super-Mare approached the club with an offer for midfielder Ade Harris, following a week of negotiation a deal was reached yesterday and Ade Harris last night signed for Weston-super-Mare for an undisclosed fee. Ade was very much a part of my plans but following discussions with the Board of Directors it was agreed that this was the right business decision for the club, and in fact for Ade and his family. I would like to wish Ade all the very best for the future and to thank him for his contribution and 100% effort whilst at Newport County AFC. David Hando has asked me to remind everyone about tonight's function at BarAmber, 'An Evening with Mike Lewis'. Entry to this is free but all proceeds from the raffle will go into the players loan fund which is still short by approximately £200 to cover the wages of our loan players for January. Please support this event. I hope to bring you further player news in the coming days.

saturday 10 JANUARY 2009 Pitch News
Good Morning At the moment the pitch and the whole ground is covered in a blanket of frost. However it was exactly the same yesterday but by lunchtime was clear and the pitch was playable by Kick Off time. I am hoping for a repeat of the same today. I have spoken to the Match Referee and to Bognor and advised accordingly. Both will start to travel and I will make another assessment at 11.00am and will update via enews accordingly.

friday 09 JANUARY 2009 Bucket Collection at Bognor Game
I am sure every single supporter will be able to contribute something towards the players fund by throwing something into our buckets tomorrow. A number of supporters have volunteered to assist with this and I would ask that they report to BarAmber prior to Kick Off (Approx 2.50pm) to collect their buckets (to be honest we are somewhat short of buckets so if anyone has a bucket we could borrow for tomorrow that would be fab!!!) The collection will take place during the first half of the game and at half time. Please give generously. A bucket will also be available in Baramber for any loose change you may have having bought your round ~ last week this raised an amazing £38! It is essential that we keep this fund raising effort up as Dean continually strives to improve the team in this time of financial constraint.
See you all tomorrow Lis |

friday 09 JANUARY 2009 Welcome Steve
I am pleased to inform you that Steve Butterworth joined us last night at training and signed on an initial months loan. Steve joins us from Dartford and as reported in the Argus will travel to training and matches with my assistant Frazer. Whilst Steve has signed the relevant forms the move is not as yet complete as we await International Clearance. If clearance is approved in time then Steve will go straight into contention for tomorrows game against Bognor Regis Town. I am grateful to the Chairman for agreeing to personally sponsor the first month of Steve's loan. I am also very pleased that both Aaron Cook and Wayne Turk have agreed to join us until the end of the season. I am hoping that we can complete this deal prior to Saturday's game as there are still a few minor details that need to be sorted out with Salisbury City The fund raising that you supporters have done and continue to do to enable me to keep these players has been nothing short of brilliant and I am extremely grateful. To date the total raised stands at £1,700 which is still short of the required £2,000 for the month of January. I am confident that this will be raised and that the fund raising will continue. Even though Aaron and Wayne have agreed to stay until the end of the season funds will be needed to help finance their stay and also to contribute towards continuing to improve the squad. During tomorrow's game a bucket collection will be held and all proceeds will go towards the players fund. Based on last week's attendance if just every person in the ground gave £1 that would be £902 towards the players fund which really is significant. Please support this scheme and give whatever you are able to do. There are still places available on the Team Travel Scheme and again all proceeds from this go into the players fund. For further details on this see Lisa or Mike. I look forward to hearing you all tomorrow and I will update you on further player developments as they happen. Thanks for your time Dean |

Tuesday 06 JANUARY 2009 Rob Duffy Departs
Following what has been a very busy today I can announce that Rob Duffy has tonight left the club. Rob has agreed to join Mansfield Town with immediate effect. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rob for his effort during his time here at Newport County AFC and to wish him every success for the future. Thanks for your time and I will keep
you updated on further developments during the week. Dean |

Tuesday 06 JANUARY 2009 Farewell and Thank You Guppy
I can now officially confirm that Craig "Guppy" Hughes has left Newport County AFC with immediate effect and joined Carmarthen Town. I am sorry that many of you had to read this in the Argus first, as I always endeavour to ensure that our Fans read such news via the enews and official sites first. On this occasion it appears that a third party 'leaked' the news to the press before all agreements were made. Until such time asMike informs me that all the relevant paperwork has been completed or is nearing completion then the 'deal' is not official. Mike has now informed me that having spoken to Carmarthen all the paperwork is being completed, signed, sealed and delivered. Therefore the news is NOW official. The decision to leave is purely Craig's and is based on his current personal circumstances which mean that he is unable to commit 110% to the Club. It was not an easy decision for Craig but one that he made in the best interests of his family. I am disappointed to lose Craig and was totally taken aback when he rang me to inform me of his decision, however I am unable to stand in the way of his decision and therefore accept it. I know that the majority, if not all of the fans will be very disappointed by this news but I hope that you can respect Craig's decision. I am sure that I speak for everyone connected with the Club when I thank Craig for his contribution, 110% effort and commitment to the Club during his time at Spytty Park. Craig will be welcome back at anytime and I am sure that he will receive a warm welcome from fans when he does. I do hope to bring you some further squad activity later in the week but please remember until the deals are done they are not official!
Thanks for your time. Dean |

MONDAY 05 JANUARY 2009 I could not have asked for more.............
And what a result! Chelmsford came to Spytty Park with a great away record of played 11, won 10 and drawn 1, with our squad at barebones due to injury and illness the headlines were already being written and I asked for a big show from our lads and every single one of them gave their all and put in a really sound team performance I was and am so proud!
Thanks for your time. |

SATURDAY 03 JANUARY 2009 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 3 CHELMSFORD CITY (0) 1
It was a great day for County who comprehensively outplayed the league leaders to earn a richly deserved success on a Spytty surface that fully justified the work of the ground staff and the judgement of match referee John Busby who declared it fit. There were no complaints either from Chelmsford manager Jeff King who declared that County “had played very well.” County dominated from the start and Craig Reid looked certain to score after eight minutes when Danny Gay dropped a cross at his feet. For once the striker with a sure touch miscued with the goal at his mercy, but like all good finishers Reid did not let it affect him and he scored in the 40th minute when a Danny Rose free-kick deflected off a defender’s head into his path and he nodded over Gay into the net. The goal was long overdue given County’s first half superiority and they carried on in majestic style after the break with Chelmsford chasing shadows all afternoon. Reid’s second on 64 minutes will be remembered as one of Spytty’s finest - a stunning flick and shot from 20 yards which crashed into the net before Gay could react. The fans sensed the hat-trick was on and Reid duly obliged them with a fantastic header from another Rose free-kick in the 78th minute. Kevin James headed a consolation goal for Chelmsford which frankly flattered them and City’s Jeff Minton was shown an injury time red card for a second caution. |

Friday 02 January 2009 2009 is here......travel with the team in 2009!!
Last Tuesday various groups of supporters met with the Chairman to discuss ways of fund raising to ensure that we are able to continue the loans of Wayne Turk and Aaron Cook, and to look at whether there is any opportunity to negotiate the return of Paul Bignot. As stated previously we have taken a gamble on extending the loans of Wayne and Aaron with the hope of gaining the necessary finances in the coming weeks. Following my last enews where I asked for fans to dig deep and support me in this fund raising effort I am delighted to inform you that three groups/individuals have to date agreed to support this to the tune of £600 which is fantastic ~ thank you! But we still have a way to go to ensure that we have the funds for the January period and to look at a further extension for February. We are constantly looking at ways of helping to support this and a number of schemes/events will be announced over the coming weeks. One of the first schemes that I am pleased to offer to supporters is the chance to travel to an away game with the team. For just £50 you will travel with the team to an away fixture of your choice, you will enjoy pre-match and post-match food whilst travelling. Entry to the game with a seat in the Directors Box, pre-match and post-match hospitality. For further details please contact either Mike Everett on 07889 359100 or Lisa Savage on 07801 710804 or see them on a match day. This offer is limited to four supporters per match and we are currently looking at filling these seats for the away fixture against Fisher Athletic on 17th January 2009. Finally Mike will be having an early look at the pitch tomorrow morning and an enews will be sent out confirming the status of tomorrow's game. Currently the pitch is playable but very much dependent on what happens overnight tonight. Thanks for your time. Dean |

Monday 29 DECEMBER 2008 Player News
As you will have read in the press I
have been in discussions with the Chairman regarding extending the loan
spells of Josh Klein- Davies, Paul Bignot, Aaron Cook, and Wayne Turk. Unfortunately, due to fiscal constraints placed upon me, it is with regret that I have to announce that Paul Bignot returns to Kidderminister Harriers and Josh Klein-Davies returns to Bristol Rovers. Both with immediate effect. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Paul and Josh for their contributions and commitment whilst at the club and to wish them well in the future. Aaron Cook and Wayne Turk will be staying for a further month, however we are currently looking at ways of financing these. If anyone, either individuals or groups are able to assist with this I would be very grateful and would ask that you contact my secretary Mike Everett on 07889 359100. In order to progress it is necessary that we maintain continuity and consistency within the squad. Thanks for your time. Dean |

FRIDAY 26 DECEMBER 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1 WORCESTER CITY (0) 0
It was not easy but County held on for their first home victory since early October, and if Worcester shaded the second half, they could have no complaints about the outcome because of the home side’s significant first half edge. The decisive goal came on seven minutes and it arrived in curious fashion. Adie Harris took a free-kick out near the left touchline and Danny McDonnell misjudged its flight and it caught the breeze and sailed into the net. The City keeper was again struggling in the 14th minute with another set piece but when Aaron Cook put the ball in the net, the flag was raised for offside. Glyn Thompson made two decent saves from Matt Dinsmore but Worcester created little. Craig Reid had a great chance to extend the advantage early in the second half when Paul Cochlin’s superb ball forward released him, but this time McDonnell was equal to the task and rushed from his line to foil the County top scorer. Cochlin was lucky to remain in one piece when Ollie Barnes launched into him with a two-footed lunge which only drew a yellow card and the Worcester centre-half almost profited from the referee’s leniency only to be denied by a tremendous goal line clearance from Danny Rose deep into injury time.

monday 22 DECEMBER 2008 Walshy signs for Tiverton
Walshy has been on loan at Tiverton for the past couple of months and they expressed a desire to make this agreement permanent at the end of the loan spell. I am sure you will join with me in wishing Phil well at Tiverton.

Saturday 20 DECEMBER 2008 Blue Square South AFC WIMBLEDON (2) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
After real cause for optimism with two performances against Rushden which indicated that County were developing into a useful side, the first visit to the home of the multi talented AFC Wimbledon left the large Welsh contingent very disappointed. The start was bright enough but Danny Kedwell’s strike midway through the first half spread doubt which seemed to be passed on to the players. It was one of those goals you acclaim if your side scores it, but it was a horror to concede, with the essential requirement to match up and mark at corners seemingly ignored. Kedwell destroyed what little self belief County appeared to possess with his second on the stroke of half-time and Jon Main completed the scoring in the 62nd minute after which the Dons mercifully lost their goal touch.

WEDNESDAY 17 DECEMBER 2008 Well Done Lads!
As you will now all be aware our FA Trophy run came to an end last night following a superb cup replay against Rushden & Diamonds. I am thrilled at the way the team presented themselves during both of these ties, but last night they really did show true determination and dedication to the cause presenting themselves in a truly professional manner. I have stated many times this season that I believe in this squad of players and last night's performance gives me great confidence for the rest of the season. The players & staff were extremely disappointed to lose last nights tie but we must not lose sight of the progress made and remember that Rushden & Diamonds are a full time club in a higher league than ourselves. It would be remiss of me not to say a great big thank you to those ever faithful group of supporters who made the long journey to support the lads last night, as ever your support is appreciated and I hope to see many more of you at Wimbledon on Saturday and hope that you are in fine voice to spur us on. A number of the Youth Team were involved in the Wales squad for last nights international match and congratulations must go to those represented their country, which is always a great honour. Well done to Scott Armitage who also scored a goal. Thanks for your time. Dean |

TUESDAY 16 DECEMBER 2008 FA Trophy Round 1 Replay RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS (0) (1) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) (1) 1 Rushden won 5-3 on penalties
Elimination from the FA Trophy was accompanied by immense pride in two performances in which County matched their higher division full-time opponents all the way, and could not be beaten on football. We wish Rushden well in their attempts to progress in the competition at Torquay United’s Plainmoor, but can take massive encouragement from three hours of action in which County were at least as good as the Diamonds. After an even first half, Craig Reid gave County a 48th minute lead when Diamonds keeper Dale Roberts was deceived by Wayne Turk’s forward ball and County’s top scorer nipped in behind him to bundle the ball over the line. Rushden scored an undeserved equaliser when substitute Sam Smith found space behind the County defence and forced the ball past the immaculate Glyn Thompson in the third of six minutes of added time. Two minutes into extra time Rushden were awarded a penalty when Paul Cochlin grabbed the shirt of Lee Phillips, but Thompson made an outstanding save diving to his left to deny Curtis Woodhouse. County were by now under heavy pressure but they came back well and in the second period of extra time it was the Diamonds who appeared to be the more exhausted. But in the shoot-out, Rushden, who went first, scored all five of their kicks with Roberts saving the second County penalty from Rob Duffy. Reid, Adie Harris and Danny Rose all successfully converted their penalties but there was no need for a fifth County player to step up to the mark.

SATURDAY 13 DECember 2008 FA Trophy Round 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1 RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS (0) 1
County produced their best home performance of the season and just shaded their encounter against opponents from the top half of Blue Square Premier. Rushden argued that the penalty from which Craig Reid struck County’s 72 minute equaliser should not have been awarded, but their manager Garry Hill acknowledged that a draw was a fair result. Equally County will feel that the free-kick from which Michael Rankine gave Diamonds a 66th minute lead was for an accidental handball by Adie Harris. Dean Holdsworth had done his homework on the Northants outfit and his 4-5-1 formation worked a treat with County stifling much of the visitors’ creative play. Craig Hughes and Danny Rose were both within a whisker of giving County a deserved first half lead while Martyn Giles prevented Diamonds from going ahead two minutes before the break with a superb saving tackle on Yannick Bolasie. Lee Tomlin and Curtis Woodhouse caught County napping to set up Rankine’s goal before Diamonds keeper Dale Roberts was judged to have tripped Reid for County’s penalty. The teams will meet again on Tuesday at Rushden’s Nene Park.

WEDNESday 10 DECEMBER 2008 Gwent FA Senior Cup R1 CWMBRAN TOWN (1) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 4
This was a useful exercise for both sides who served up an entertaining encounter on a treacherous surface which was freezing as the temperature dropped during the course of the game. County fielded former players Danny Hill and Lee Jenkins who have been training with them recently and several youth team players had valuable opportunities to play in senior football. Cwmbran have been finding life difficult since dropping out of the Welsh Premier League but they played some sparkling football early on and took the lead on 17 minutes with a goal headed by Marlon Kabi from a Ricky Hodge free-kick. They held their advantage with relative comfort before Adie Harris equalised with a well-worked goal three minutes into the second half. County took control and won with plenty to spare through further goals from Kevin Cooper, (65), Scott Armitage (72) and Ashley Vickers (86). Josh Klein-Davies had a late penalty saved by Crows keeper Richard Jeffries.

TUESDAY 09 DECEMBER 2008 Gwent Senior Cup
A reminder that tomorrow night we take on Cwmbran Town in the Gwent Senior Cup. K.O 7.45pm at Cwmbran Stadium. As promised I will field a strong team which will include, subject to obtaining the relevant International Clearances, two ex- players. Many of you will have read that Lee Jenkins has been training with the squad over recent weeks. Lee is looking incredibly fit and I am pleased to include Lee in the squad for tomorrow night. For those of you who have been following the club for many a year, you will remember a certain Danny Hill who emigrated to Australia several years ago. Danny is back in the Country and is keen to have a game and I am delighted to be able to offer Danny the chance to be included in the squad.
Thanks for your time. Dean |

Sunday 07 DECEMBER 2008 Thanks On behalf of the players and
management I would like to express our sincere thanks to the ever faithful
group of supporters who made the long trek to Essex for our game against
Thurrock on a bitterly cold day. Your support was great and the vocal encouragement spurred the players on to get a point from this match. I was particularly pleased with the result, although we could have snatched all three points, I understand that this is only the second time that a Newport County AFC side has managed to get a point at ship lane. As we enter an important week, I urge you all to keep up your support and encourage the lads from the starting whistle on Saturday as we play Rushden and Diamonds in the FA trophy.
Before that on Wednesday night we will face Cwmbran Town in the Gwent Senior
Cup where I intend to field a number of first team players. Thanks again for your support and
your time. Dean |

Saturday 06 DECEMBER 2008 Blue Square South THURROCK (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
On a day when all 11 sides playing away from home in Blue Square South returned home with some reward, County ensured they did not buck the trend with a battling point in Essex against opponents they are yet to defeat in nine attempts. Glyn Thompson pulled a save out of the top drawer to deny the league’s November Player of the Month Leon McKenzie, but that save apart, the consistent shot stopper was rarely troubled by the home attack with acting captain Aaron Cook outstanding on his full debut. Craig Hughes created a good chance for himself in the first half but fired over the bar when a pass to the unmarked Craig Reid might have proved a better option, but County carved few openings for themselves. Referee Ian Crouch tried hard to keep the game flowing but his strict discipline meant that County had five players cautioned and Thurrock finished with 10 men after midfield player Charlie Howard was shown a second yellow following an altercation with Danny Rose.

SATURDAY 29 November 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 BISHOP’S STORTFORD (0) 1
County’s home form continues to haunt them as they produced a timid performance against an unusually robust Bishop’s Stortford who supplied the one goal that the game did not deserve! The match was seemingly heading for a goalless stalemate when, midway through the second half, Blues’ substitute Jason Mason produced its one piece of urgency to capitalise on a midfield surrender of possession by County. Craig Hughes was unlucky when Nicky Eyre made a goal line block with his legs 10 minutes later, but the visiting keeper was able to enjoy a relatively quiet afternoon, and County hugely disappointed with their failure to stretch their opponents and test them with crosses. There were six cautions, three apiece, including County substitute Martyn Giles who managed to pick up a yellow card for remarks to the assistant referee made from the sidelines. |

FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2008 Introducing our new signings
I have just received the information that international clearance has come through for us to complete the signings of Aaron Cooke and Wayne Turk from Salisbury City. I am delighted to have also sealed the signing of Josh Klein-Davis from Bristol Rovers. All players are joining us on initial months loan. The three players will add further quality to our squad and give us competition for places. I would like to thank all involved for making this happen. See you all tomorrow and thanks for your time. Saturday 22 NOVEMBER 2008 FA Trophy 3 QR ANDOVER (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 3
County strolled into the First Round Proper of the competition with a very comfortable victory against a side who had defied disappointing league form to eliminate Merthyr Tydfil and earn this tie. There never appeared the remotest chance of the Lions of Andover devouring more roast Welshmen and they had little to offer but a somewhat random offside trap. County were caught out 14 times including when Craig Hughes had the ball in the net in the 18th minute and the match should have been beyond the home team by the time a combination of Kris Leek and Kevin Cooper combined to set up Danny Rose to break the deadlock on 40 minutes. Andover continued with their naïve attempts to defend too far up the park and further goals followed when they were caught out again by Craig Reid on 53 minutes and Craig Hughes in the final minute. Guppy’s effort takes him up to 55 in our goal charts with only Chris Lilygreen (93) and Garry Shephard (62) ahead of him.

TUESDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2008 Blue Square South MAIDENHEAD UNITED (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1
County produced a great display of togetherness to clinch their first away win of the season, and it was certainly well deserved. Maidenhead this season are a different proposition from the Magpies of previous vintage when avoiding relegation has been the annual Conference South aim, but of course County have a very good record against one of the oldest clubs in the business. A goal after just six minutes by top scorer Craig Reid, his sixth in 11 games for County, proved sufficient, but when Nathan Davies was forced to retire with an ankle knock after 33 minutes, a victory looked a tall order for the Exiles who were down to their last 10 fit senior players. Youth team captain Ricky Manship, who celebrated his 18th birthday the previous day was the replacement and he proved a fine advert for the Academy on his first team debut. He was joined by Scott Armitage who came on for the latter part of the game and also made a significant contribution. Had Rob Duffy’s 77th minute header not rattled the crossbar with Steve Smith beaten, County would have been spared a nervous finale, but Maidenhead mounted relatively little second half threat and the final whistle was the cue for County celebrations on and off the pitch.

SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2008 Blue Square South HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE (0) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1
After the trauma of the previous week’s hammering at the hands of Hayes & Yeading, a threadbare County squad travelled south to Westleigh Park looking for a positive result against the underachieving Havant & Waterlooville who were looking to end a run of five straight defeats in Blue Square South. At the end Havant had stopped the rot but County will feel that all three points should have been theirs. Havant shaded the early exchanges with Robbie Matthews, their new loan signing from Salisbury, lively if not lethal as an attack leader but it was County who were first to strike when a 28th minute Danny Rose corner on the right caused problems and Ashley Vickers played it back for the head of Paul Cochlin to nod the ball over the line. There was inevitably going to be pressure of the aerial variety from the Hawks but Cochlin was magnificent at the back alongside the resilient Vickers and Craig Reid was easily the best attacking player on view. A second County goal was starting to look likelier than a home equaliser with Reid denied by a goal line clearance, a brilliant save and a harsh referee’s whistle when he found the net. However Havant had options on the bench and one of those was Paul Booth, possibly the most prolific scorer at this level. Booth struck for an equaliser four minutes from time, though County complained that Glyn Thompson had been fouled in the build up to the goal. At the end the travelling fans gave the manager and the players a tremendous ovation and this result could yet prove an important turning point for the managerial reign of Dean Holdsworth. |
|
SATURDAY 08 November 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1 HAYES & YEADING UNITED (1) 5
It was hardly the birthday present Dean Holdsworth wanted as Hayes & Yeading inflicted a record-equalling home defeat on County with a second half display of slick movement and superb finishing. There was a mood of relative optimism at half-time that County could secure a confidence building victory though, as a slow start was followed by some bright attacking play. Steve Perkins scored an excellent opener on eight minutes for the visitors, but Craig Reid responded with an equaliser in the 28th minute, four minutes after hitting the post and at half-time the game was too close to call. But once James Mulley restored Hayes’ advantage in the 51st minute, there was only one team in it. Scott Fitzgerald produced some lethal finishing scoring twice in three minutes before Josh Scott completed the rout on 71 minutes to cap a very impressive performance against an outclassed County. |

TUESDAY 04 NOVEMBER 2008 FA Youth Cup Sponsored by E ON Round 1 CHELTENHAM TOWN (4) 5 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
County had to endure the bitter taste of defeat after four victories in which they scored 21 goals and conceded just five in the FA Youth Cup. On a superb surface at Whaddon Road, the under-18 team of League One Cheltenham proved much too strong and gave an outstanding first half display.
The home side settled quickly and Lewis Fathers fired them into a seventh minute lead after a slick build-up, and they threatened to add to their advantage before Scott Armitage created a chance for himself which he fired narrowly wide of the goal of Joe Perry, son of former Exile Jason. However in a five minute spell after the half hour, Cheltenham simply blew County away with three goals. Jack Durrant headed the first from a left wing corner before Joe Barrett, who hails from Newport, struck a magnificent goal from long range after showing a superb first touch to control the ball on his instep. Marley Watkins headed the third from five yards out after a twice taken free-kick.
The task for the second half was to play for some pride and County achieved this, showing a greater confidence in their passing ability. County matched the home side in terms of possession with Gary Colborne and Armitage giving displays they can be proud of and Cheltenham were a little flattered by their fifth goal on the hour from Theo Lewis. However County scored a well worked goal five minutes from time when Armitage broke down the right and hit a perfect cross that invited the headed finish that his strike partner Luke Prosser duly supplied.
But County, with two under-16 and four first year players in the starting line-up, can learn from this experience.
Cheltenham: Perry, Haynes, Quaynor, Fathers, Pattison (Keen 72), Hoare, Watkins, Durrant, Maynard, Lewis, Barrett (Taylor 67). Subs not used: Lee, Tosh, Emery.
County: Harris, Mouncher, Hughes, Evans, Colborne, Harries (Young 67), Greening (Flanagan 47), Manship, Armitage, Prosser (Grant 90), Davies. Subs not used: Oakley, James. |

SATURDAY 01 NOVEMBER 2008 Blue Square South BASINGSTOKE TOWN (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
A point ultimately proved to be a satisfactory outcome from a game County should have been looking to win. Basingstoke can be bleak on such blustery days when the wind, rain and a slippery pitch compromise the attempts of two sides near the wrong end of the table to play constructive football. However, the main talking point of this very disappointing encounter was the performance of the match referee. Antony Coggins has developed a reputation for courting controversy and unfortunately this most engaging and enthusiastic of officials again disappointed with his poor judgement. The pivotal moment came in the 36th minute when County’s Kevin Cooper made an excellent saving tackle to rescue his side after Paul Bignot had mishit a pass. Coggins not only awarded a free-kick but, having held a discussion with his assistant, decided that a goalscoring chance had been denied and showed a red card to the County midfielder. The video evidence showed that a fair tackle had been made, but while sympathy must be expressed with officials who have only one chance to get it right, this has to be balanced by an expectation that referees can differentiate between a good tackle and serious foul play. With more than half the game to play with 10 men, an away win was then a tall order but County comfortably kept a poor Basingstoke side at bay and Coggins showed a second yellow card to Martyn Giles close to the end when he made a rash challenge only after having his shirt almost torn from his chest. |

FRIDAY 31 OCTOBER 2008 Cockers re-joins!
I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with Paul 'Cockers' Cochlin to return to the club. Cockers was one of the players who left the club during the summer. At this time he was an unknown quantity to me as a Manager and I could not guarantee him a position within the Squad. But as they say 'Football is a funny old game 'and as things have turned out Cockers has expressed a desire to return to Newport County AFC and I am delighted to have him back on board. We are still awaiting International Clearance but hope to have Cockers available for selection on Saturday. Talking of availability for selection, despite press reports that Ashley Vickers is NOT suspended for the Basingstoke game. Ashley picked up his fourth booking of the season against Welling and is therefore available for selection. As always with any new arrivals it is necessary to try and balance the budget books and therefore it has been necessary this week to arrange for two players to have loan spells with other clubs. Those departing are Dan Harrison who returns to Cinderford for a second spell and Kris Leek who has joined Clevedon. We will watch their progress with interest. Congratulations to fans favourite Craig 'Guppy' Hughes and his partner Tasha on the birth this week of their daughter Amelia Rose. Well done Tasha! I look forward to seeing you and more importantly hearing you at Basingstoke on Saturday. Your vocal support during recent games has really lifted the lads, please keep it up and keep the faith. Thanks for your time Dean |

TUESDAY 28 OCTOBER 2008 Setanta Shield R2 BATH CITY (2) 4 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1
Dean Holdsworth’s selection options were severely restricted and a makeshift side was swept away by Bath. With Paul Hall released and Justyn Roberts having returned to Rushden at the end of his loan spell, he was also denied the option of including Ashley Vickers and Craig Hughes for family reasons, Nathan Davies who is still unwell and the cup-tied Leon Osei. Dan Harrison and Chris Hartland both made their first starts of the season and trialist left-back Callum Hart was introduced for his debut, with Rob Duffy and Paul Bignot defying injury and illness respectively to take their places on the substitutes’ bench. Yet it was County who took a 33rd minute lead after a miskick from Bath keeper Paul Evans put his side in difficulty. Kris Leek showed admirable calmness to square the ball to Craig Reid who scored easily. However, a nervous looking defensive line was breached twice in three minutes before the interval by the predatory Dave Gilroy. Kevin Cooper was denied by a goal line clearance early in the second half before Gilroy completed his hat-trick with arguably the most blatantly offside goal of all time in the 54th minute. He was one of two Bath players probably 10 yards clear of the last defender when the ball was played forward but he played to the non-existent whistle to beat Glyn Thompson and County’s modest resistance was over. Gilroy earned his match ball with a perfectly fair goal eight minutes later and with the outcome settled the small crowd had little to keep their interest before referee Carl Berry called time. |

SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 WELLING UNITED (0) 0
The kick-off was delayed by 25 minutes because of Welling’s late arrival but there was little that was worth waiting for when the ‘action’ started. There was mitigation for County in that several players had been laid low with a flu bug, with some being bedridden for part of the week. Welling shaded the match in terms of possession and half-chances created, but Glyn Thompson still had one of his easiest afternoons. There were few notable incidents though Ashley Vickers made an excellent saving tackle in the 68th minute when the timing had to be perfect. Earlier the County skipper was shown a yellow card by referee Andy Newell after being wrestled to the ground by Eastleigh’s James Baker. It was a shame that an official, who used to be one of the best at this level, once again struggled and provided many talking points with his errors. It is a shame also that Vickers’ caution, his fifth of the season, will result in one match suspension. His fury at the referee’s misjudgement was not concealed! |

TUESDAY 21 OCTOBER 2008 FA Youth Cup Sponsored by E ON 3rd Qualifying Round FOREST GREEN ROVERS (2) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 4
A day after their seniors staged a last gasp comeback to draw a thrilling game at Weston; County’s youngsters surpassed the first team’s effort to win a game they trailed 3-1 with a quarter of an hour remaining. Rovers boasted a 25 match unbeaten run and with a trip to League One Cheltenham Town’s youth team for the winners in the first round, there was plenty of incentive for both teams at the immaculate New Lawn stadium in sleepy Nailsworth.
County teams have quite a record in visits to the Cotswold town with the first team having a return of 10 wins and just a solitary extra time defeat at the former Rovers venue just a couple of hundred yards down Spring Hill, while the youth team won convincingly last time they were in town. Cheltenham youth team manager, a certain John Brough, was an interested spectator and County started the game in disappointing fashion. Gary Colborne was penalised for a challenge just outside the penalty area and a couple of hundred yard and from the free-kick Jake Parrott did a passable imitation of Danny Rose’s effort from 24 hours earlier to give Rovers an eighth minute lead.
County appeared nervous at the back and Broughie was probably discarding his notes on the visitors when Jack Webb was left free to score the second in the 17th minute. But County gradually pieced their game together and Luke Prosser stabbed the ball home from close range to reduce the arrears on 25 minutes. The Armitage - Prosser scoring machine was clicking into gear and it looked a mater of time before the sides were level. Home keeper Tom Pass fumbled a high cross and retrieved the ball as it was about to cross the line.
The County contingent was in relatively confident mood at the interval but they again were two goals adrift after the useful looking Adam Mann headed in from a corner in the 54th minute. The home side appeared to tire greatly and struggled to keep pace with County’s movement. Scott Armitage had a shot deflected on to the crossbar before scrambling the ball over the line in the 75th minute. There was no stopping County now and Colborne powered home a header from a corner with five minutes remaining before a neat build up ended with Prosser setting up his strike partner Armitage for a 90th minute winner.

MONDAY 20 OCTOBER 2008 Blue Square South WESTON-SUPER-MARE (0) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
Whisper it, but is Weston becoming a happy hunting ground for County? This dramatic draw at the seaside made it three games unbeaten at Woodspring Stadium, and two of them contained match changing County goals with the game’s final act! Danny Rose’s free-kick five minutes into stoppage time will become the stuff of County folklore as did Sam O’Sullivan’s header 18 months ago which clinched a 4-3 victory. The extraordinary thing was that Weston were closing out the game in relative comfort and County were pegged back around the halfway line when an assistant referee spotted an act of aggression from Weston assistant manager Andy Gurney against Rob Duffy just outside the penalty area. The former County midfielder was shown red by referee Simon Knapp and Rose had one last chance which he delivered with precision. In the 73rd minute Ashan Holgate, who made one cameo County appearance three years ago hit a superb cross which Darren Mulings turned in at the far post. New signing Leon Osei made a late debut as a substitute as County went for broke and the mood of the 300 travelling fans in a crowd of 528 was somewhat happier at 9.35 pm than seemed possible moments earlier, but the draw was richly deserved.

SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER 2008 Blue Square South BRAINTREE TOWN (2) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 2
There was widespread sympathy for County in Essex for making a major contribution to a highly entertaining game only to come home with nothing to show for it. But while on the balance of play, a draw may have been deserved; there were lessons to learn, particularly from a defensive point of view. Braintree twice took a first half lead through set piece goals which were both the product of poor defending. A long throw-in from Billy Burgess on the right was flicked on for Danny Hockton to escape his marker at the back post and head unchallenged into the corner of the net to notch the first in 34 minutes. Then in the 45th minute Burgess stole in unmarked to head in a Micky Shinn corner at the near post. County’s first equaliser from Justyn Roberts on 39 minutes was a spectacular shot after a great break down the right from Craig Reid. In first half injury time, Reid who was the best player on either side showed excellent control and supplied a superb finish to send County in level. County were edging the second half when Paul Bignot was penalised for an off the ball shirt pull in the 78th minute only for Hockton to fire wide from the penalty spot. Less than 60 seconds later however, Hockton outpaced Ashley Vickers and redeemed himself by firing home what proved to be the winner. Braintree needed what the home match announcer described as “the save of the season” however to hang on to the points when, deep into injury time, Craig Holloway in the home goal made a reflex stop to break County hearts and deny Martyn Giles an equaliser. County were acclaimed by their fans at the end as if they had won!

WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOber 2008 FAW Youth Cup R2 SWANSEA CITY (1) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
The final outcome was a little cruel on County who bowed out of the competition at the second hurdle against a speedy and slick Swansea side on a slippery surface at the St Helens rugby and cricket stadium. The home side are managed by the familiar figure of former County goalkeeper Tony Pennock with whom it was a pleasure to renew acquaintances. County gave a very good account of themselves in an even first half though the sides were separated at the break by a goal from Matthew Wright midway through the opening period following a loss of concentration at a home corner. County caused plenty of problems with Luke Prosser deployed just behind his strike partner Scott Armitage and Pennock was frequently frustrated by the ability of Armitage to find space between the home central defenders. A delightful pass from Prosser sent Armitage clear but for once the striker with a sure touch was inches wide of the target. Swansea were proving a dangerous counter attacking side though their lead did not look secure until another set piece goal after 65 minutes when Lee Lucas headed in after another corner was not cleared. Substitute Joe Harris set up another goal for Lucas which was slightly flattering for Swans though with seconds remaining Chris Hartland was denied a deserved consolation when his shot slammed against the post from 20 yards
Swansea: Rhys Wilson, Daniel Sheehan, Joe Walsh, Ben Adelsbury, Matthew Whatley, Daniel Alfei, Jaz Richards, Lee Lucas, Kieran Howard, Matthew Wright, Casey Thomas.
County: James Peckham, Tom Mouncher, Andrew Hughes, Gary Colborne, Dan Harrison, Lewis Grant (Josh Brown 68), Ben Evans, Ricky Manship, Scott Armitage, Luke Prosser, Chris Hartland |

Well what a week...and it's

MONDAY 06 OCTOBER 2008 FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 4 YATE TOWN (0) 0
County’s progress against Yate was never in doubt, with the visitors offering little challenge to a very competent and disciplined home side at Newport Stadium. Hat-trick hero Ben ‘The General’ Evans returned to the midfield role he performed last season with devastating effect and was the outstanding player on view even without his three goals! Evans netted his first in the 13th minute, following good work by Scott Armitage down the right, with a haymaker of a shot into the roof of the net. County looked fluent all over the park and a second goal was inevitable. It came from an inswinging corner by skipper Ricky Manship from the left on the half-hour with Evans timing his run to perfection and hitting an unstoppable header. Evans clinched a splendid hat-trick in the 47th minute with an action replay of his second goal from another Manship corner, while substitute Jamie Harries completed the scoring with yet another header from a Manship corner in the final minute to give the County captain his own hat-trick of assists. Yate’s Nuno Felix hit a superb free-kick from 30 yards which struck the underside of the bar in the 61st minute and the rebound also rebounded from the frame of the goal.
It must be recorded that Yate’s George Brimson brought discredit upon himself and his team with behaviour throughout the game which has no place on a football field. The striker committed an assault on Armitage after just 15 minutes for which he was extremely fortunate to escape with a caution, and he was then let off with a warning from referee Chris Baynton for another bad foul before the official appeared to miss a third nasty challenge before half-time. The referee prepared to signal a second yellow when Brimson fouled Harries four minutes from time only for the forward to then head butt Dan Harvey forcing the official to show a straight red. On the way to the dressing room Brimson made unacceptable gestures towards the crowd and after the shocking behaviour of Brislington in the Preliminary Round, it is regrettable that such standards appear to be accepted by their clubs.
County will travel to play Forest Green Rovers in the third and final qualifying round.
County: James Peckham, Tom Mouncher, Andrew Hughes (Paul Nicholls HT), Dan Harvey, Gary Colborne, Lewis Grant (Jamie Davies 69), Ben Evans, Ricky Manship, Scott Armitage, Luke Prosser (Jamie Harries 84), Cory Jenkins.
Yate: Alex Pearce, Craig Power, Mike Hodge, Charlie Lacey, Callum Warren (Craig Doyle 85), Josh Phillips, Jordan Yeo (Thomas Febry 65), Matthew Tovey (Oliver Slade 53), Carl Laney, George Brimson, Nuno Felix.
Referee: Chris Baynton (Brecon) Assistants: Mark Dyson (Abertillery), Chris Williams (Llanbradach). |

SATURDAY 04 OCTOBER 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 3 BROMLEY (0) 0
The weather was awful as County faced a potentially season defining game three days after the bitter disappointment of FA Cup exit, yet again the fans turned up in large numbers and gave Dean Holdsworth’s men their full backing. How they were rewarded as County swept aside their opponents to bring a smile to everyone’s face except the handful who had travelled west from the metropolis. The first goal owed a little to fortune on 20 minutes as keeper Gareth Williams completely misjudged Paul Bignot’s wind assisted cross from the right which ended in the top corner of the net. Eight minutes later Rob Gillman felled Craig Reid after the on loan Grays forward had moved well to collect Danny Rose’s pass and Reid stepped up to send Williams the wrong way from the spot. Bromley had wind advantage after the break but the game remained as one-sided in County’s favour and Bromley’s Adam Everitt saw red in the 65th minute after two fouls on Paul Hall in quick succession. Two minutes later 10-man Bromley were three goals adrift as Craig Hughes finished good approach play from Rose and Reid, and it was celebration time. |

WEDNESDAY 01 OCTOBER 2008 FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Replay NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 1 DORCHESTER TOWN (0) 2
This was a desperately disappointing outcome for County on the day after the news of the tragic death of club director Stewart Williams. County went into the game in a confident frame of mind and although the first half lacked the thrills and spills of previous encounters between the clubs that have been characterised by great goals and poor defending, the mood at half-time was that the confidence was not misplaced. An error by Kevin Hill on 40 minutes set up a chance for Craig Hughes and though Gareth Stewart did well to block his shot at goal, the ball looped up for Craig Reid to head it over the stranded Dorchester keeper into the net. The lead was never seriously threatened until Nick Crittenden made space down the County left flank and hit a low shot past Glyn Thompson for a 60th minute equaliser. From then on County found it difficult to contain the Magpies and the impressive Crittenden clinched a deserved victory with a similar strike on 83 minutes. |

SUNDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2008 FAW Youth Cup Round One NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 4 MERTHYR TYDFIL (1) 1
The University Playing Fields at Llanrumney was the venue as County’s youngsters once again took part in a hugely entertaining cup encounter against a very competent Merthyr side, most of whom had first team experience. Ben Evans switched from a central defensive role to his former place in midfield and he wasted no time making an impact with a third minute goal from well outside the box which tested the security of the goal net. Merthyr, who included former Exiles Dafydd Brewer and Aaron Thomas, came back well and had plenty of possession with Marcus Griffiths finding space down the right to fire home a 28th minute equaliser. County had to bide their time as the youth Martyrs enjoyed a period when they did most of the pressing without creating much in the way of goal chances but, like a good boxer, County waited for their moment and when Chris Hartland had half a shooting chance 12 minutes from time, he fired past Ryan Griffiths from 20 yards. Merthyr were now on the ropes and Scott Armitage applied the kill with a breathtaking finish two minutes later before goal machine Luke Prosser competed the scoring on 83 minutes with a far post header. The final score was a little harsh on Merthyr who played a full part in a very competitive match that was evenly poised until the closing stages, but County in this mood are a very solid unit.
County: James Peckham, Tom Mouncher, Paul Nicholls (Declan Flanagan 62), Dan Harvey, Gary Colborne, Ricky Manship, Ryan Buckley, Ben Evans, Scott Armitage, Luke Prosser (Lewis Grant 84), Chris Hartland (Troy Greening 90).
Merthyr: Ryan Griffiths, Adam Lewis (Jordan Brown 83), Aaron Thomas, Ashley Facey, Ross Porter, Craig Franklin, Thomas Harris (Paul Sedgmore 49), Ceri Morgan, Adam Cushen (Ceri Clingo 76), Marcus Griffiths, Dafydd Brewer. |

SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 2008 FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round DORCHESTER TOWN (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 2
Dorchester against County clashes continue to clock up the goals and this was a typical cup-tie with controversy, thrills and action at both ends, and plenty of talking points for both sets of fans. At the final whistle it was the visitors who were, without question, the happier set of supporters, though this was a fair result and the replay is as predictable as Andy Newell’s refereeing. The Yate official took centre stage by awarding a penalty for what was surely an involuntary handball by County’s Martyn Giles, and then ordering a retake upon the advice of his assistant after Glyn Thompson had spectacularly saved the first effort from Ryan Moss. Moss had given the Magpies a 17th minute lead which they fully merited at half-time as County with their three new signings got to know each other and when Moss scored the retaken penalty on 51 minutes, it looked all over for the Exiles. A sense of injustice can sometimes work in a team’s favour however, and County clicked into gear with a passionate last 35 minutes. Rob Duffy scored from the spot after the inspirational Danny Rose was chopped down in full flight and Rose equalised with an 83rd minute free-kick.

THURSDAY 25 September 2008 FA Youth Cup Sponsored by E ON 2nd Qualifying Round TIVERTON TOWN (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 3
County’s youngsters returned to a venue that has not been a happy hunting ground for the first team to achieve progress in a thrilling FA Youth Cup-tie. On an immaculate playing surface both sides served up a highly entertaining match played in an excellent spirit and well controlled by referee Darren Thompson. County, playing in their Barcelona style change kit, settled into the game fluently and it was no surprise when Scott Armitage showed his customary deadly touch in front of goal to fire his side into a sixth minute lead. However Tiverton responded well and replied through David Hood who squeezed a shot into the net from a narrow angle in the 25th minute. County shaded the opening period though and Gary Colborne scored a stunning header from Ricky Manship’s free-kick with the final act of the first half to restore the lead. The quality from both sides was impressing spectators and the Devon side had a good spell in the second half and could not be grudged their second equaliser from a Jon Bailey free-kick on 62 minutes. But County were not to be denied the victory they just about deserved and Luke Prosser ensured his place on the score sheet with a decisive flick from a neat pass from substitute Jamie Davies 10 minutes from time. Attempts by Pross to claim the four other goals were once again turned down by the dodgy goals panel! All credit to Tiverton for their part in the game and for their hospitality. County will meet Yate Town at home in the final qualifying round, after their 4-3 extra-time victory over Merthyr Tydfil on the same evening.
Tiverton: Dan Stapleton, Jon Bailey, Jack Porter, Aiden Harper-Penman, Jonny Rawlings, Jonny Holding Ed Placket HT), Glen Gould, Jack Lamb-Wilson (Tom Perryman 83), David Hood, Damien Connery (Liam Curtis 62). Subs not used: Elliot Crook, Ryan Sellick.
County: James Peckham, Tom Mouncher, Paul Nicholls (Daniel Harvey 50), Ben Evans, Gary Colborne, Rickey Manship, Lewis Grant, Troy Greening (Ryan Buckley HT), Scott Armitage, Luke Prosser, Cory Jenkins (Jamie Davies 73). Subs not used: Declan Flanagan, Alex Harris. |

SATURDAY 20 September 2008 South West Counties Youth League NEWPORT COUNTY (3) 5 POOLE TOWN (2) 2
County’s youngsters sparkled against league newcomers Poole in this morning game at Llanrumney. Paul Nicholls hit a superb cross for Gary Colborne to open the scoring after 19 minutes and Scott Armitage showed his customary sure touch to double the lead two minutes later. Poole hit back and reduced the deficit through Ricky King who reacted well to flick home from a free-kick on the left on 26 minutes and he then nipped in behind stranded keeper Alex Harris to equalise 10 minutes later. The lead was restored before half-time when Luke Prosser claimed the last touch from a Ben Evans header - however Pross allegedly claimed the last touch in the other four goals so we are not sure if his claim is to be believed. County produced an excellent second half display to put Poole to the sword and there were further goals from Lewis Grant and substitute Jamie Harries, with the latter being a top class effort.
County: Harris, Mouncher, Nicholls, Evans, Colborne, Manship, Grant (Cooke 73), Alcock (Greening HT), Armitage, Prosser (Harries 66), Jenkins.
Poole: Tong, Shering, Spetch, Orchard, P James, T James, Dooley, Hall, Fisk, Trembath, King. |

SATURDAY 20 September 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 ST ALBANS CITY (0) 1
The 886 fans present will not need to be told that this was very poor indeed, and neither side deserved any reward from a game as turgid as any you are likely to see at this level. St Albans shaded it in terms of chances created, but the 90 minutes produced not more than four shots on target and that included a penalty that barely had the momentum to reach the net. Paul Hakim set up a chance for Simon Martin to give City an early lead and County’s Danny Rose extended Paul Bastock in the 10th minute, but both sides lacked the skill to retain possession while referee John Busby had his work cut out with a few rash challenges needing his intervention. The deciding goal came on 71 minutes when Ashley Vickers made a rash challenge on City’s Gary Cohen just inside the area and though Jonathan Hunt sent Thompson the wrong way from the penalty, the St Albans player was relieved to see the ball roll into the net via the upright.

SATURDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2008 Blue Square South BISHOP’S STORTFORD (1) 1 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1
There were decidedly mixed feelings for Dean Holdsworth and the County contingent after a result that would have been viewed as satisfactory both before the game and certainly at half-time. At the end however, the Gaffer was disappointed that his side had not accepted the chance to grab all three points after a bizarre encounter. With Glyn Thompson still sidelined, Holdsworth drafted in the regular Redbridge keeper Tony Tucker on a one off arrangement with the blessing of the chairman of his former club who were without a fixture and the 27 year-old did all that could have been asked of him with a performance of calm authority. After County shaded the opening 20 minutes, the home side created some opportunities notably through the speedy Peter Dean but Tucker made some fine stops though he had no chance in the 40th minute when Paul Hall lost possession near halfway and Dee Okijie advanced to strike the frame of the goal leaving Roy Essandoh the simple task of nodding the Blues in front from the rebound. However home keeper Nicky Eyre who had made a top class first half save to deny Rob Duffy was replaced at half-time by the inexperienced Charlie Hasler whose participation was soon curtailed when he picked up a red card for a challenge on the goalbound Hall. County were relieved to see the lively Dean don the green jersey and he was given no chance by Duffy’s 58th minute spot-kick. However he kept his goal intact thereafter as County could not find a way through a packed defence, and a draw was without doubt a fair outcome.

TUESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2008 Setanta Shield R1 DORCHESTER TOWN (1) (3) 4 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) (3) 5
The omens pointed to a goals extravaganza, with the sides drawing 4-4 when Dorchester visited Newport a couple of weeks earlier, while just days previously County had travelled to another set of Magpies and shared six goals before play was abandoned less than an hour into the game. A disappointing attendance of just 178 turned up and they were served up a treat of thrilling attacking play accompanied by some, shall we say, less than perfect defending. Australian under-20 call-up Mitch Nicholson fired the Dorset Magpies in front in 18 minutes with a slick finish after good approach play from Darren Watts, but Kevin Cooper struck a superb equaliser from approaching 30 yards after 35 minutes. County’s prospects looked good when Rob Duffy forced home a header from an Adie Harris corner on the hour but two goals inside two minutes first from Leon Osei in the 70th minute and then from Wes Fogden had the Magpies flying. In the final minute of the 90, Phil Walsh headed his first for County when he climbed high to reach a cross from the right from Steve Jenkins to take the encounter into extra time. It was anyone’s game but Danny Rose scored a goal of high quality for County after some determined work from Walsh only for the home side to level at 4-4 early in the second period when Gary Bowles nipped in front of Nicky Church to nod home a Nick Crittenden free-kick. The last word went to Paul Hall six minutes from the end of two hours of the cup-tie and it was appropriate that the impressive County forward produced such a high quality finish.

Tuesday 9 September 2008 Ian HILLIER It came to our attention of the terrible accident that was suffered by Ian Hillier crushing his leg and potentially putting his football career at threat.
As Chairman of Loyal Luton Supporters Club, the largest independent supporters group of Luton Town, I would be grateful if on behalf of all our members you could pass on our best wishes to Ian and that we hope he has a speedy and successful recovery.
As a club we have fallen again to the bottom division of the Football League and the last time we played at this level Ian was a member of our successful promotion squad and I personally recall a fantastic goal he scored in a backs-to-wall win up at York City amongst other memories and I am sure that the chance of reliving such great memories will spur him on in his recovery. MONDAY 8 September 2008 FA Youth Cup NEWPORT COUNTY (6) 10 BRISLINGTON (0) 0
County’s youngsters made a welcome appearance at Newport Stadium in this first hurdle of the FA Youth Cup and a crowd of approximately 300 saw them conduct themselves with dignity, discipline, skill and professionalism against opponents who let themselves down very badly with their behaviour. Referee Kris Hamer helped the situation with his calm authority though some of the challenges from the Bristol-based team horrified the crowd. Scott Armitage started the ball rolling in the fifth minute, finishing good approach work from the impressive 15 year-old Troy Greening, and after Armitage had a penalty saved by Lewis Bond in the Brislington goal, Gary Colborne scored from the resultant corner. Steve Watkins was then shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Luke Prosser before Lewis Grant added a third. Prosser netted his first in the 40th minute with Armitage and Grant making it six by half-time. County continued to delight the fans with their passing and control though one sometimes feared for their safety as the tackles came flying in, and Dan Harvey and Ben Evans soon added to the tally after the break. Bond did emerge with some credit for several fine saves and the final score could have easily been twice as many, though goal twins Prosser and Armitage ensured it reached double figures before Arron McQuaid became the second visiting player to be dismissed.
County line-up: Peckham, Harvey, Mouncher (Nicholls 40), Evans, Colborne (James 64), Manship, Jenkins, Greening, Armitage, Prosser, Grant (J Harris 60). Subs not used: Buckley, A Harris. |

FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2008 Blue Square South MAIDENHEAD UNITED (2) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 3 Abandoned after 56 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch
There was no argument about the timing of Antony Coggins’ decision to call off this highly entertaining encounter because the match was ceasing to become a contest of skill as the rains continued to pour. Berkshire had escaped the drenching that western parts suffered over the previous couple of days but the York Road pitch had no chance with the incessant downpour that started at around 6 pm. It was a shame in some ways because despite the equality of the scores, there was really only one side in the game as County produced some sparkling stylish football and were outclassing their hosts. However the conditions were deteriorating so fast that the outcome was as predictable as trying to buy a winning lottery ticket. Dale Binns fired the Magpies into a second minute lead before County pressure paid off with a Craig Hughes reply after 15 minutes as the Exiles threatened to take control. Ashley Nicholls squeezed a shot past Erwin Sak just before half-time to give United an interval lead completely against the run of play but doubts about the match lasting the course were raised when Shane Gore in the home goal went on a slide and lost the ball. The attempt of Hughes to fire into the empty net failed when the ball stopped on the line but Danny Rose finished the job only for Jamal Fyfield to restore home advantage almost immediately when a Kevin Stephens back pass stuck in the water. Paul Hall equalised for County before Mr Coggins sensibly called it a day. |

WEDNESDAY 3 September 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE (1) 2
An unhappy day for County began with the news that popular and consistent club captain Ian Hillier had suffered a serious accident at work requiring hospital treatment and, no doubt, a considerable period of convalescence. However the victory against Hampton four days earlier provided hope that another success was on the cards against the pre-season promotion favourites. It was not to be and on a filthy night the true heroes were the crowd, with 859 turning up with the vast majority seeking another home victory. It was a disappointing spectacle with the Hawks cashing in on a 31st minute slip by Kevin Stephens who lost his footing to leave Sam Gargan through on goal. The forward who is on loan gave no chance to 18 year-old Polish goalkeeper Erwin Sak, who was making his debut after signing on loan from Cardiff City the previous day. County desperately needed a break in front of goal as the visitors sat deep and looked in control though a couple of crosses from Steve Jenkins were just begging for a finish. Havant sealed a deserved victory when Charlie Henry produced a fine finish after fellow substitute Jamie Slabber set up the chance in the 83rd minute. |

SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1 HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH (0) 0
County players left the field with the well-deserved cheers of the fans ringing in their ears following their first victory of the season. The narrow margin of the result gave lie to their substantial superiority, but a win is a win, and CRAIG HUGHES decided the destiny of the points with a 64th minute header from a Dave Collins cross. Hampton spent most of the game trying to disrupt County’s attempts to play passing football, and if all of their play away from home is as sterile as this there can be no surprise that only a handful follow them on the road. They are not a side fashioned in the style of their manager Alan Devonshire but the former West Ham midfielder will point to the effectiveness of their game plan in the successes achieved since he has been in charge. Three minutes after Guppy’s goal, County lost Glyn Thompson with a groin strain, but Nicky Church came on for his debut and dealt with the aerial menace of the visitors with complete authority. Rob Duffy and Danny Rose were close to adding to the advantage while at the back Ashley Vickers had an impressive debut alongside Kevin Stephens who was superb in a central defensive role. |

MONDAY 25 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South TEAM BATH (1) 2 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
Five games played and still no success for County who have just two points to show. The full-timers of Team Bath were predictably well organised and capable, but again defensive errors were to cost County dearly and once the students had their noses in front, they looked comfortable. A long kick downfield by home keeper Jake Meredith should not have presented a problem but it was allowed to bounce and gather pace with Josh Llewellyn reading the flight perfectly to nip in behind Nick Skelton and deftly chip it over Glyn Thompson. Skelton was a surprise name in the starting line-up when he agreed to help out after Martyn Giles was ruled out and he almost had a dream return when his seventh minute header hit the crossbar. But Team Bath closed ranks after taking the lead and though the enterprising Anthony Church was close after good play by Danny Rose in the 51st minute, it was a rare threat and Steve Abbott killed off County resistance by again punishing poor defending to strike at the second attempt in the 72nd minute. |

SATURDAY 23 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (2) 4 DORCHESTER TOWN (1) 4
This game veered from the sublime to the ridiculous with, strictly from a home perspective, some fine attacking play balanced by some suicidal defending. On this occasion, the adage that you only score good goals and concede bad ones was exactly true as far as County are concerned. DANNY ROSE gave them a sixth minute lead when he reacted quickly to Phil Walsh’s lay-off from a Dave Collins free-kick, but Dorchester were level after 17 minutes when KEVIN HILL was given the freedom of the penalty area to head home Nick Crittenden’s corner. A free-kick just outside the box gave ADIE HARRIS the chance to fire County back in front in true Beckham style in the 36th minute. However, more home generosity gifted the ball to RYAN MOSS who levelled on 57 minutes and Magpies substitute LEON OSEI made an immediate impression to give Dorchester the lead on 82 minutes. County were not beaten though and Danny Clay helped their cause with a needless foul which brought him a second yellow card with five minutes remaining. Harris took the free-kick and Kevin Stephens headed the ball back across goal for JAMAL EASTER to slam home his first goal for the Exiles. As the match drifted into injury time CRAIG HUGHES scored after Rose opened up the defence with a ball to Rob Duffy, but still nobody was confident that the points were safe and Dorchester had the last word when, astonishingly, HILL was left free again to latch onto a cross and fire against the upright and slot home the rebound. Not surprisingly Dean Holdsworth was furious after the game.

SATURDAY 16 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South CHELMSFORD CITY (0) 0 NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0
From the perspective of the lover of the beautiful game, County’s first visit to Chelmsford Sports and Athletics Centre will not live long in the memory. However, there were few complaints from the County contingent in that this was a matter of mission accomplished after two matches in which seven goals were conceded with the goalkeeper taking the individual honours both times. Glyn Thompson was once again his immaculate self but Chelmsford did not pose him too many problems and there were some outfield performances to admire as County showed a strength of purpose and team organisation. A 4-5-1 formation may in retrospect have been showing too much respect to the opposition but, playing a side with maximum points from their opening two games, it is understandable that the Gaffer wanted to build a solid foundation. A clean sheet that was rarely seriously threatened is a positive reward and there were pleasing performances in particular from Craig Hughes, Paul Hall and substitute Anthony Church who had all seen little or no competitive action to date. |

SATurDAY 16 AUGUST 2008 CONGRATULATIONS JAMES
We are delighted to congratulate our Assistant Academy Director James Rowberry, who last week became the youngest person in Wales to gain a UEFA 'A' Coaching licence.
Academy Director Glyn Jones commented: "It is a tremendous achievement, both for James and for the Academy. In fact it has been an excellent few days for us. Two days after learning of the success achieved by James, I was very proud of the performances of the two sides we sent to the Midlands to play representatives of Aston Villa at their immaculate training facilities. |

TUESDAY 12 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South EASTLEIGH (2) 3 NEWPORT COUNTY (1) 2
County were the architects of their own downfall during a second-straight defeat at Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium that was perhaps more comprehensive than the narrow score-line suggested. Despite displaying the same defensive frailties that blighted Saturday’s opening-day fixture at Spytty, Dean Holdsworth’s side almost snatched the most unlikely of points with a rousing late rally. Only 21 minutes had elapsed when the unfortunate Phil Walsh turned the ball into his own net, with the hosts doubling their advantage on 40 minutes thanks to an impressive strike from Anthony Riviere. Winger Kevin Cooper gave the Exiles a glimmer of hope on the stroke of half-time, coolly stroking past Jason Matthews, but it was no surprise when the Spitfires restored their two-goal lead on 64 minutes with a Matt Groves effort. Only ten minutes remained when substitute Danny Rose finished off County’s best move of the night with a sparkling strike and full-back Kevin Stephens came within a whisker of snatching an undeserved equaliser with a long-range effort in injury-time. Their can be no real complaints regarding the final result however, with Eastleigh deserving the full three points overall.

SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 2008 Blue Square South NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 1 AFC WIMBLEDON (1) 4
Following the reconstruction of the Exiles squad, we knew it would be difficult against a resurgent AFC Wimbledon, and full marks go to the visitors for a very impressive performance in front of Newport Stadium’s highest attendance for a league match. The Wimbledon fans made up a substantial minority of the crowd of 2,546, but, on a depressing rainy day, there were more home supporters than attended any Blue Square South game at Spytty Park last season. The individual honours went to Dons’ striker JON MAIN who scored a brilliant hat-trick, but apart from an even opening half hour, there was no doubting the substantial superiority of the visitors all over the park. Main headed Wimbledon into a crucial 39th minute lead and he struck a spectacular second on 58 minutes before laying a claim to the match ball on 71 minutes. TONY FINN added a fourth three minutes later before DAVE COLLINS provided some County consolation with 10 minutes remaining. |

FRIDAY 08 AUGUST 2008 A New Season - and No Injuries
The last five weeks training has given me time to reflect on who should be appointed captain for this season. Martyn Giles is a natural leader, Adie Harris I have no doubt will captain the team one day, Dave Collins has put himself in the frame with his attitude and commitment and Guppy is always in the mix as he wears his heart on his sleeve. Ian Hillier is the new captain of Newport County AFC. An integral part of the club over the last few years, his stature has grown, he is the perfect foil for the rest of the squad and I'm sure that you will all see his pride in taking the armband when he leads the side out tomorrow afternoon. Everybody on the playing side cannot wait for 15:00 tomorrow - and you need to play an important part in that. Your vocal support can really make a difference to the side - you will all remember that your support is one of the reasons Phil Walsh stated for coming here - so let the team all here you loud and proud tomorrow afternoon. Let's also ensure that football and Newport are the winners tomorrow afternoon. We want the reports on Sunday and Monday to be about what has happened on the field. Your support of the team, the club and the authorities is essential in making this happen. The team is selected and they know who they are - today's decisions are as to the bench and whether to have a continental theme to the second half music. Have a great afternoon - see you all tomorrow. Gaffer |

Thursday 07 AUGUST 2008 The Season Starts on Saturday!
Over the last few weeks we have attended a number of lengthy meetings and following a meeting today, which included at times the Chairman of Wimbledon by telephone, the following arrangements have been put in place for Saturday's match. 1. AFC Wimbledon supporters will be allocated 40% of the covered Terrace, that being the end nearest the Spytty Road end, and if required will also have use of the Spytty Road terrace. There will be NO section of the seated stand available for travelling AFC Wimbledon fans. 2. County fans will only have access to the covered terrace by walking access around the interior of the ground at the Cricket Club end, and can access the ground via the usual turnstiles. 3. There will be separate catering and toilet facilities provided for County and AFC Wimbledon fans on the covered terrace side of the stadium. 4. Baramber will be strictly members only. 5. As of Saturday's match entry to the stadium car park will have a fee of £1 per car parked, on a first come first served basis. As attendances have increased you will have all noticed the chaos of cars double parked, parked on double yellow lines and blocking other vehicles. In the event of an emergency it has been pointed out that emergency vehicles would be unable to gain access to the ground. For this reason we have introduced a minimal charge that will cover the cost of stewarding the car park and limiting numbers to the safe limit. Let's ensure that Saturday is remembered for the football and friendly banter between the two sets of supporters. Match Day Team |

SATURDAY 02 AUGUST 2008 Friendly NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 0 LEEDS UNITED XI (0) 1
County rounded off their pre season programme with an entertaining encounter against a second-string Leeds side. A beautifully sunny afternoon presented perfect playing conditions for the two sides, in front of a bumper home crowd, that saw an entertaining encounter ensure; full of quick football with a dearth of chances. It was surprising therefore that visitors Leeds snatched a single goal victory courtesy of Nathan Cartman’s delightfully-taken chance just six minutes from the end. County did enough during an enterprising opening half to warrant much better.

Friday 1 August 2008 We keep moving forward....
As the new season beckons, discussions within the club and at board level have now lead to the appointment of a new working group with the express task of solving operational issues, increasing revenue and improving profitability - all with the aim of taking the club forward as quickly as possible. The members of this group are: Rob Santwris - Everyone at the club knows Rob. As well as being a former supporters' director and the licensee of Bar Amber Rob has recently been appointed as the new Chief Steward at the request of the Council and Police. As you may already know Rob has his own Carpet business. Kevin Morris - Kevin, a former general manager at Carmarthen Town, has been helping with the footballing side of the club for a number of years. He has already shown himself to be an invaluable asset to me and works closely with the players and myself. Kevin works on a day-to-day basis for our main club sponsor Acorn in a recruitment role, which includes finding additional work for our players. Duncan Jardine - is another person known to everybody at the club for his tireless fundraising through the programme shop. Duncan and his team plough thousands of pounds in to the club every year through their fundraising efforts. If that wasn't enough Duncan then spends his "working" life fulfilling a similar role with sports programmes and memorabilia. Mike Everett - another former director and the man behind all of the official club footballing paperwork as well as his never ending work within Bar Amber. Mike works in a senior role within a major professional services company. Roger Hiscott - Roger has been working closely with me since my arrival and fulfils a variety of roles within the club and the academy. A lifelong County supporter he is as likely to be found collecting footballs after training as he is striking commercial partnerships for the club. Roger has his own business as a freelance management consultant. This group have been given the authority of the board to work autonomously on projects to take the club forward and I welcome them all on board. I'm sure that you will be hearing from them soon so please give them all of the support that you can. Leeds Game As you can imagine the players are all buzzing with the prospect of playing a very talented Leeds United side tomorrow. It gives us the opportunity in our last pre season friendly to see how we have progressed and for us to analyse what we need to be working on in next week's training sessions in the run up to the big kick off. I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the match tomorrow and was impressed by the singing on Wednesday night. Let's hear a repeat of that tomorrow and I'll leave you guessing as to the music for tomorrow's second half! Please look out for an ENews from The Programme Shop later tonight with a one off offer to get your hands on one of this season's squad tracksuits which will not go on general sale. Gaffer |

WEDNESDAY 30 JULY 2008 Friendly NEWPORT COUNTY (0) 2 EXETER CITY (0) 1
County’s victory over Football League newcomers Exeter City was pleasing on the eye and, like all our pre-season friendlies, was played in a good spirit. The Devon side travelled with a youthful squad sprinkled with a few first team players. County started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Rob Duffy the sole striker but he was well supported in the first half by Danny Rose, Kevin Cooper and trialist Adam Connolly who all made useful forward runs. Exeter had a few decent half chances but Glyn Thompson was not called upon until the 50th minute when he collected a Neil Martin header. Martin was then judged to have tripped another County trialist, substitute Jamal Easter, and DAVE COLLINS convincingly disposed of the first home penalty at the Stadium for two seasons to give the Exiles a 63rd minute lead. A long ball from defence by Paul Keddle then picked out the run of Phil Walsh who outpaced the Exeter defence for PAUL HALL to supply the final touch. Exeter pulled a goal back two minutes from time when STEVE BASHAM scored from the penalty spot after being pushed by Nick Skelton. |
