Sam, who was capped for the Republic of Ireland at Under 18 level, was on the books of Cheltenham Town as both a scholar and as a professional, and it was for their reserve side that he first established a partnership with Craig Reid. He was released at the end of 2007-08, following a period on loan at Bath City and spent most of the following season with Kidderminster Harriers, having a loan spell at Redditch United before signing for County, also on loan in February 2009. He made a big impact in both midfield and attack with his cultured play, persuading then manager Dean Holdsworth to secure his services on a more permanent basis for the 2009/10 season when he proved to be yet another golden signing with 17 goals scored, and many more created. Undoubtedly one of the most talented players at the club, 2011/12 will be a big season for Sam.
