County win at leaders Burton

Newport County AFC travelled to top of the table Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon and a Miles Storey goal was enough to seal the points.

The game started brightly with both sides battling to get on top early on, with just four minutes on the clock County had the first corner of the game, the corner eventually falling behind for a goal kick.

Lucas Akins was the first to try his luck for the hosts as his shot was well held by Joe Day. As we passed the half hour mark Adam McGurk fired a shot from the edge of the area beating everyone but the woodwork, the ball bouncing back out off the upright and eventually cleared to safety by the County defence.

Nasser El Khayati was next to go close for the hosts as his strike was held by the Joe Day. With five minutes to go until half time, Mark Byrne had the chance to put County ahead, his volley at the far post was saved well by Jon McLaughlin and cleared away by the Brewers defence.

HALF TIME: Burton Albion 0-0 County

County began the second half strongly and it was Chris Zebroski who had the first chance of the second half, his looping header was held by Jon McLaughlin in the Brewers goal. County kept up the pressure and Mark Byrne was next to go close as his shot went wide of the mark and behind for a goal kick.

Then came the breakthrough, a well worked team goal that begun from the back and ended up with Miles Storey firing home into the far corner to give County a well deserved lead on the hour mark.

Burton were dangerous however and Adam McGurk went close just ten minutes later as his free kick whistled past Day's post and out for a goal kick. Mark Byrne headed across goal from an Adam Chapman corner in the 78th minute, but the ball eventually finding its way onto the top of the net for a goal kick.

A strong County defence battled through five minutes of stoppage time at the Pirelli Stadium and despite a Burton corner that was headed wide for a goal kick, the Amber Army were sent home back to South Wales with all three points.

Attention quickly turns to another important game at Rodney Parade this coming Tuesday as County welcome Mansfield Town, so we ask the #AmberArmy to come out and #SupportTheBoys!
