MATCH REPORT: CALDICOT TOWN

8 July 2016

The Exiles began their pre-season schedule with a 2-2 draw against Caldicot Town AFC.

Manager Warren Feeney selected to two different sets of teams in each half, to allow the majority of the playing squad the opportunity of forty-five minutes of action in County's first pre-season fixture of the season.

County began the encounter lively and looked to utilise the pace of Jennison Myrie-Williams down the right wing. It was the winger who had the first opportunity of the match when he cut inside and fizzed a driven effort that flashed narrowly past the post.

The home side was then awarded a penalty when Darren Jones was judged to have committed a foul inside the County area and Rory Carey slotted home the spot-kick for the home side.

Caldicot's lead was short lived, as County were awarded a penalty of their own shortly after, for a foul on winger Myrie-Williams. Trialist Marlon Jackson managed to squeeze his penalty past Gareth Wesson in the Caldicot goal to pull the scores level.

The home side restored their lead when a long throw in the County area fell kindly to Matt James, who stabbed his volley into the back of the net from close range.

At half time County made ten changes, with Tom Owen-Evans being the only player to return for the second half that had taken part in the opening forty-five minutes.

A resilient Caldicot limited County's chances on goal in the second half, with the best chance falling to Lenell John-Lewis, who could not keep his powerful volley down, after turning neatly on the edge of the penalty area.

There was a lengthy delay and worrying scenes when striker Lenell John-Lewis went down injured after turning sharply, with the striker looking in much discomfort when receiving treatment on the field of play. The injured striker was replaced by youngster Kyron Tolland and his injury will be assessed by the medical staff over the coming days.

In the dying moments of the game winger, Jack Compton slotted a curling free-kick into the bottom corner of the net from twenty-five yards out, which meant the game ended in a draw.
