MATCH REPORT: Stevenage 0-2 Newport County

12 March 2022

Second half goals from Rob Street and Ryan Haynes earned County back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory over struggling Stevenage.

After a low-key first half, Newport took the lead on 48 minutes through Crystal Palace loanee Street's first goal for the Exiles before half-time substitute made it 2-0 with 20 minutes left.

It was a cagey first half at the Lamex, with very little in the way of goalmouth action between the two sides.

Newport County had the better of the play, but a combination of final passes going astray and determined Stevenage defending broke down many positive moves fashioned by James Rowberry's team.

The only shot at goal of note for County was Finn Azaz shooting narrowly wide from the outside of the box, while Nick Townsend made two fine saves to deny Jake Taylor and Zain Westbrooke in the closing stages of the half.

Newport started the second half perfectly though, with Crystal Palace loanee Street scoring his first goal in County colours by converting Dom Telford's low cross from the left of the box to make it 1-0 in the 48th minute.

Matt Dolan, who replaced Jake Cain just before half-time, almost made it 2-0 immidiately but his free-kick was sent just wide of the right-hand post.

Stevenage upped the ante when trailing with Terence Vancooten and Luke Norris both having attempts go high and wide of the Newport goal.

Haynes made it 2-0 though in the 70th minute with a fine strike. The half-time replacement for Aaron Lewis doubled Newport's lead with a lovely strike with his weaker foot in off the right-hand post from distance.

Again, Paul Tisdale's side improved once conceding a second goal, but substitute Elliot List who could only shoot over from a tight angle and spoon a shot wide from 12 yards, as County saw the game out with a clean sheet.
