MATCH REPORT: Newport County U18 4-3 Torquay United U18 (FAYC R1)

3 November 2021

Jack Karadogan, Callum Ryan-Phillips and a brace from Harrison Bright saw Newport progress to the second round of the FA Youth Cup at the expense of Torquay.

Karadogan gave County the dream start at Spytty Park when he drove at goal and smacked a powerful strike from the edge of the box into the back of the net for 1-0 after four minutes.

Jack Windsor shot over the bar for the visitors and Kardogan fizzed an effort wide for County but it was Torquay who levelled things in the 16th minute when Brandon Quinn nestled a penalty into the bottom right corner, sending Evan Ovendale the wrong way for 1-1.

The scores were not level for long though as Bright got the vital touch among a crowd of bodies to knock County back into the lead in the 19th minute after an effort from Karadogan from the edge of the area.

Sonny Lewis and Iestyn Evans both came close for the Young Exiles, shooting wide and heading over the goal respectively before County got the two-goal cushion their play deserved.

A free-kick from the right landed right on the head of Ryan-Phillips who nodded into the back of the net on 26 minutes.

County pushed to extend their lead even further through Ethan Morgan who headed over the bar before Charlie Bullock also saw a shot clear the top of the goal before the opening 45 minutes came to an end.

Torquay started the second half the brighter, however. Evan Ovendale was needed to make a crucial save to deny Lewis Brooks' header from point-blank range and Brooks got the Gulls back in the game in the 54th minute from inside the box after a mix-up.

Bright got his second and County's fourth 12 minutes from time though to seemingly settle the tie as a contest with a close-range header.

That was until Brooks got his second in the 86th minute with a finish under Ovendale to keep the Gulls in the game right until the end.
