Defender Lewis Payne joined the Exiles on a season-long loan from Championship side Southampton in the summer of 2023.
The versatile right-back was promoted to the Southampton first-team following impressive performances as part of the Southampton U23 squad. He has also worn the captain’s armband for the B team on multiple occasions.
He made his full debut for Southampton in August 2022 when he started away at Cambridge United in the League Cup. He grabbed an assist and a clean sheet, earning praise from then-manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.
Payne joined National League Eastleigh on loan in January 2023, making two appearances for The Spitfires before being recalled by Southampton just two months later.
He arrived at Rodney Parade in August 2023, making his debut for the club off the bench in an impressive 4-0 home win against Doncaster Rovers.
