Mark Byrne announced as club captain

5 August 2015

Newport County AFC can today confirm that Mark Byrne will be club captain for the season ahead.

Mark signed for County in July 2014 and made his debut for the club against Wycombe Wanderers, in the first league game of last season.

The midfielder went on to make over forty appearances last campaign, contributing four goals.

Mark started his career at Nottingham Forest, making his professional debut in April 2008, before joining Rushden and Diamonds on loan. Mark then moved on to Barnet, before being signed by previous County boss Justin Edinburgh last summer.

On announcing the midfielder as captain, manager Terry Butcher insisted that Mark's work rate was a major factor in selecting him as captain.

"He is everywhere on the pitch, the work rate he gets through is enormous, as it is for all the players", Terry told the press at the training ground.

"There are quite a few players would could be captains but Mark is quite vocal on the pitch and he inspires people because of his work rate and energy. I've been really impressed with him".
