EDUCATION: County To Offer Foundation Degree

Newport County AFC are delighted to be able to offer twelve places on a Foundation Degree, in partnership with the University of South Wales.

The degrees are designed for individuals who wish to work in the ever-expanding football industry, whether this is as a coach, or as a member of staff working within communities developing initiatives and driving participation through education in football.

The degree is also endorsed by Sports Coach UK, highlighting that what you will learn meets industry standards and requirements, giving you an advantage when you come to seek employment.

Mykee Jenkins who is the Lead Academy Goal Keeping Coach for Newport County is currently enrolled on the course. “I have found the course to be very enjoyable and flexible, It has improved my educational and social skills whilst also giving me added responsibility, the success I stand to gain upon completion of the foundation degree will hopefully be life changing.”

COURSE CONTENT

Year 1 modules:
Managing and Developing Football in the Community
Football Coaching: Young Performers (Football Association of Wales (FAW) Level 2 UEFA C)
Academic Research and Professional Skills
Introduction to Sports Development
Sports Development in Practice

Year 2 modules:
Community Sports Development
Work Based Learning (Football Coaching)
Football Coaching: Adolescent Performers (Football Association of Wales (FAW) Level 3 UEFA B coaching license)
AFPE Physical Education and School Sport

Regular coaching opportunities with community and academy staff which will be a further opportunity to apply your knowledge with an extensive work based learning programme, working within specific roles and real life football projects with our community coaches

The course will teach you aspects of generic children’s and youth coaching, football coaching, football development, social inclusion, and sports management skills

Weekly lectures, seminars and tutorials will be delivered in a classroom environment and via on-line material

You will be enrolled as a student at the University of South Wales and have access to the university’s online library, blackboard and learning materials

You will spend a minimum of seven days per year at the University of South Wales High Performance Centre – The USW Sport Park and receive full accommodation during these teaching blocks

The two year course allows students to study all sub disciplines of coaching and gain valuable industry recognised qualifications’.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

160 – UCAS points
FA Level 1 Award in Coaching Football (which can be obtained through the Community Trust)
Three A* – C’s at GCSE including English or Maths

EXIT ROUTES

Top up to a full BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Coaching or Sports Performance
Coaching opportunities in America
Job opportunities within Newport County AFC and Newport County AFC County in the Community.

COST

£6,750 per academic year (covered by student finance)
£200 for compulsory sports kit
