County win at Adams Park

With chances few and far between in the opening period, it was County who mustered the first half-chance to open the scoring. Striker Lenell John-Lewis twisted on the edge of the area and launched a snapshot volley that bobbled across the face of goal and was watched past the post by Matt Ingham.

A set-piece presented Wycombe with their first threat on goal. A tricky free-kick by Max Kretzschmar bounced in front of Joe Day and the County goalkeeper could only push the ball away from danger, before gathering the rebound on the second attempt.

The best chance of the half fell to the hosts, when a deep cross into the County area was headed back across goal by Amadi-Holloway to the advancing Max Kretzschmar, who launched a powerful volley goalwards that was blocked by the outrushing Janoi Donacien.

The second half half began with County registering a number chances from set-pieces. An early free-kick from right was driven into penalty area low from Scott Barrow, but the hosts were able to read his delivery and clear any potential danger.

Wycombe captain Joe Jacobson then made a lively run from deep, playing a series of two one-twos with team-mates before breaking into the County area. Falling off-balance his resulting attempt didn’t panic Joe Day, who gathered his shot comfortably.

The hosts maintained the attacking threat, with the majority of their chances originating from deep-crosses launched into the County area. Mark Byrne rose well to clear one such cross, but his clearance fell into the path of the lingering Marcus Bean, who had both the time and space to fire a volley that fired past the left-hand post.

County then made the crucial break to open the scoring. Loanee Tommy O'Sullivan latched onto a slack clearance by the home-side and drove a cross towards goal from the edge of the area that took a generous deflection into the net off Marcus Bean.

The win was sealed when substitute Scott Boden reacted the quickest to a long-ball forward and broke free inside the hosts area and finished calmly past Ingham at the near post.

County held out for the remainder of the game, with the home side struggling to break through the resolute Newport defence. A late chance fell to Sam Wood, who attempted a long-range effort that was never in danger of troubling Joe Day.
