MATCH PREVIEW: CAMBRIDGE UNITED

7 April 2016

All the facts you need, ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League Two fixture against Cambridge United.

Looking at the visitors

Cambridge United are winless in their last three games but are still looking up from their current league position of 12th towards the playoff places, as they look to bridge the five point gap to the top seven in the final six games of the season. They are a side that have no problems in finding the net averaging just under 1.5 goals per game but that figure is the same for their defence, they only have a goal difference of 2. Barry Corr, who scored two against County on the opening day of the season, is their top scorer with 12 in the season, Luke Berry has 10 and Ben Williamson has 9. Cambridge will be looking to do the double over the Exiles this season, who haven’t won at home in over a month.

Last meeting

Two goals from Barry Corr and an extra nail in the coffin from Robbie Simpson ten minutes from time left Newport leaving the Abbey Stadium with a heavy 3-0 defeat on the opening day of the season. The victory meant that Cambridge took the first top spot of the season whilst Newport were only above York City at the bottom.

Last time out

Newport fell to a fourth defeat in a row thanks to a Jack Compton penalty a quarter of an hour into the game after Danny Holmes brought him down in the box. The defeat means that Yeovil and Notts County climb above the Exiles in the table, County are in 21st place, 12 points above the bottom two with 18 points left to play for.

The Man in charge

Darren England is in charge for this fixture with his assistants Matthew Jones and John Farries, the fourth official is Marvyn Amphlett. England has only been in charge of one Newport game in his three seasons on the list. That came earlier this season when County beat York 1-0 in January thanks to an early Aaron Collins goal just eight minutes in. Throughout this campaign he has refereed 25 games handing out 88 yellow cards at an average of 3.52 a game, and six red cards.
