REPORT: SWANSEA CITY (FAW YOUTH CUP)

9 March 2016

The Exiles suffer defeat to Swansea City in the FAW Youth Cup semi-final.

'Keeper Elliot Matthews was forced into making an early save within the opening two minutes to deny Owain Jones, who managed to poke a cross from the left towards goal, but the County shot stopper was alert to claw the effort away.

County's first chance of the game came just before the fifteen minute mark, when Dafydd Jones made a well timed challenge to gain possession and advanced towards goal. The midfielder found time and space to shoot and his effort bounced wide of the right-hand post from twenty-yards out.

Swansea looked dangerous from set pieces, with Jordan Garrik sending a free header from close-range narrowly over the crossbar, from a corner from the right-hand side.

Just before the half-hour mark the Swans took the lead from the spot, after Daniel James was fouled inside the area. Klyle Copp dispatched the penalty, calmly placing the ball into the bottom right corner, after 'keeper Elliot Matthews had dived in the opposite direction.

The Exiles' youngsters responded well to going a goal behind, stringing a good number of passes together inside the opposition half, which resulted in the ball dropping to Corey Shepard on the edge of the area. The midfielder lined up a shot from distance, but witnessed his effort drift past the post, in what was an encouraging attacking move.

After the break County had a good chance to level through Corey Shepard. The midfielder muscled Joe Rodon out of possession and broke through on goal, only to glance his effort narrowly past the post, with just the 'keeper to beat.

On the stroke of the hour Swansea carved an opening down the left-wing that resulted in Owain Jones delivering a dangerous cross into the area that was a almost met by the lurking Jordan Garrick at the far post.

The Swans added a second with just over fifteen minutes left on the clock. A diagonal cross was met on the left by Matthew Blake, who hit a first time volley that crept over the head of Elliot Matthews.

In the final moments of the game a Rhys Kavanagh cross that was aimed at the far post was met by Dafydd Jones, who side footed an effort towards goal that beat the 'keeper but was cleared off the line by substitute Dan Jeffries.
