POST-MATCH | Flynn taking the positives from draw with Cambridge United

11 August 2019

Manager Michael Flynn insists he’s more than happy with the ‘solid’ start made by Newport County AFC to the 2019/20 campaign after they remained unbeaten with a battling 0-0 draw against Cambridge United.

Conditions at The Abbey Stadium didn’t exactly make it easy for the Exiles to play their expansive attacking football, with a mixture of wind, rain and sun in intermittent periods affecting the flow of the contest.

County still managed to create the better chances as Padraig Amond twice came mightily close with volleys, captain Joss Labadie saw a header well saved and Jamille Matt wasn’t too far away.

The best opportunity came with two minutes to play. Substitute Tristan Abrahams used his pace and power to set up ex-Cambridge man Robbie Willmott, but Dimitar Mitov got a big hand to a swirling strike to keep the game goalless.

Flynn affirmed: “I’m not too concerned [about two draws]. We played very well last Saturday and should have won; here we had the better chances in very difficult conditions.

“You could see it [the conditions] affected things. The boys were misjudging where the ball was landing, putting too much on a pass, not putting enough on a pass so it did affect things.

“We still managed to have the better chances and a point [away from home] is of course not a bad result. This time last year we’d already lost and now we’re unbeaten at the minute with two solid draws on the board.

“Without being an exciting start to the season, it’s a solid start to the season. Being unbeaten is important.

“This is a difficult place to come, Cambridge have improved and on another day, we could have won that game one or two nil.”
