POST-MATCH | Michael Flynn offers an honest assessment of defeat against Oldham Athletic

24 November 2019

Michael Flynn admits Newport County AFC’s performance against Oldham Athletic was ‘very poor’ as they slipped to a third successive League Two defeat at Rodney Parade.

Zak Mills’ neat finish in first half stoppage time was enough to give Oldham Athletic just a second away league victory of the season as they put some distance between themselves and the teams hovering around the relegation zone.

County had the better of possession at Rodney Parade but they rarely troubled Zeus De La Paz in the Oldham net and Flynn says his side have got to improve in the coming weeks.

“We were very poor,” Flynn affirmed. “I thought it was two poor teams, but they got the goal and we didn’t look like scoring.

“Look, we didn’t get cut open at any point, we just switched off. We’re not looking positive going forward, which isn’t good enough. We wasted too many balls, too many crosses hit the front man and we’ve got work to do.

“It’s nothing that we haven’t been through before, so look I’ve got work to do.

“It’s the first time since December 2018 we’ve lost three in a row in the league. There’s things to iron out, Colchester we deserved to lose, we didn’t do enough today and against Salford we were slightly the better team but conceded two set-plays.

“It’s poor – we had players kicking balls out of play, people missed tackles, shooting when they should have crossed. It’s a problem and some of the players look low on confidence.”
