PRESS | "I want to score every game." Striker Padraig Amond Ahead of Grimsby Cup Replay Clash

20 November 2019

Padraig Amond is looking to add to his impressive record in the Emirates FA Cup when Grimsby Town, who parted ways with Manager Michael Jolley last week, visit Rodney Parade in the first-round replay.

The Irishman struck from the spot in the initial tie to earn the replay against his former club and he will be looking to get among the goals again tonight with a trip to Maldon & Tiptree the reward for a victory.

Amond has enjoyed this competition in recent years and was the joint-top scorer in last season’s competition with five – along with Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City.

He is currently on a streak of scoring in the past seven rounds he’s played in but will have to navigate his way past the Mariners if he is to continue that run.

“I want to score in every game whether it’s the first round of the FA Cup, the first round of the League Cup or 25th game in the league, it doesn’t make a difference to me,” said Amond.

“You want to score in as many games as possible but at the same time it doesn’t matter whether I score or not as long as we win the game.”

The striker will also be hoping to get on the scoresheet to mark his new two-year contract and admits manager Michael Flynn played a huge part in his decision to extend his stay in South Wales.

“For me, he’s the best manager in the league. He’s been brilliant,” Amond added.

“There is no messing with him, he just says it as it is and players respond to that a lot more than being told what they want to hear at times.

“He’s a very good manager, he’s going to go a long long way in the future and we’re lucky to have him.

“Look where the club was when he took over, probably going out of the Football League, and now look at the club.

“The club is in a very healthy position and that’s a massive reason why I stayed here.

“You want to be successful and right the wrongs of last year. It still hurts but you have to use that at motivation to get to the next level.

“We’ve done really well in the FA Cup recently and this is another chance for us to put another marker out and show teams how good we are again.”
