MATCH REPORT: Newport County 1-0 Bristol Rovers

5 March 2022

James Waite's first goal for the club secured a league double over rivals Bristol Rovers.

County started brightly, and had the first chance of note after five minutes with Rob Street volleying just wide of the right-hand post, connecting with a superb left-wing cross by Jake Cain.

Nick Anderton was the first to force a save out a goalkeeper, with the Bristol Rovers man having a shot from the left of the box pushed away by County stopper Nick Townsend.

Newport hit the post shortly after the half-hour mark with Cain's' free-kick from the right aimed towards Street coming back off the left-hand post and behind.

That was the start of a bright period for Newport, with the unquestionable highlight being Waite giving County the lead on 33 minutes.

The January arrival from Penybont scored his first goal for the Exiles with a fine strike from the edge of the box into the left of the goal with a shot following a mazy run from the diminutive forward.

County were almost two-up two minutes later, with a cross from the right aimed towards Telford. He was out-jumped but the ball landed at the feet of Cain who struck a half-volley narrowly wide of the far post from 20 yards.

Cain tried his luck again soon after, but his free-kick whizzed past the far post for Newport's last attempt of the half.

The second half started brightly for Newport, but Street was brilliantly denied by James Belshaw to keep the score 1-0 with Street having a close-range header tipped behind after Finn Azaz's cross from the left.

Nick Townsend was needed to make a fine double save to keep the score 1-0 though, with his second save showing fine reactions to deny Aaron Collins.

County hit the post again just before the hour when Alex Fisher, just on as a sub, connected to Azaz's dinked cross with a diving header, but it came off the woodwork and away.

Townsend made a fine save late on to deny Luca Hoole in Bristol Rovers' best chance and County held on to secure a league double over the Gas.
