Albert Derrick Senior
Albert signed for County in 1935 but had already lost time through serving in the Army for seven years, including five on the North - West Frontier.
He was a major influence, including being the 2nd top joint scorer during our first promotion in 1938/39.
Sadly, WW2 then broke out. So, he had another six - year gap in his career, re-joining us for the post war Football League Season in 1945/46.
At least before he retired he was then deservedly able to play against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham and other clubs at the highest level.
Despite that break Albert still made a total of 175 appearances scoring 74 goals. His namesake son was born only 200 yards from our ground and also played up front for us in the 1960/61 and 1969/70 seasons.
Actually, Albert did indeed make one further appearance at Somerton-in a
match to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. County played Newport Rugby Club, with the first half played with their rugby ball!
Albert sadly passed away in 1975 aged 66 and was posthumously inducted into our Hall of Fame on 18th September, 2009.
