RIP Fred Stansfield
Everyone at Newport County AFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our oldest surviving former player Fred Stansfield.Club historian Andrew Taylor tells of Fred's time at the County: ''Unfortunately Fred’s career was interrupted by the war and he joined us in 1949 in the twilight of his career, having been captain of a successful Cardiff City side and capped against Scotland the previous year. Fred became player manager in March 1950 and with major boardroom problems causing unrest and uncertainty resigned in 1953. Described by team mates as a ‘true gentleman’ Fred always retained his love of the game and would in later years often be found in the company of former County and Cardiff stalwarts Buller Lever and Ken Hollyman, both also now sadly departed.''
The club's thoughts are with Fred's family at this difficult time.
