Player in and out for County
Newport County AFC is delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Peterborough United for the sale of Conor Washington. After prolonged negotiations between both clubs a deal was reached with exciting young striker Shaun Jeffers joining the County from the Posh.
The transfer of Washington could net the County in excess of £500,000 and with the potential of a future wind-fall as a sell on clause has also been agreed with Peterborough. Newport County AFC can confirm that we have beaten off stiff competition for 21 year old Shaun Jeffers and we are delighted to welcome this exciting prospect to the club.
6’ 1” Jeffers started his career at Coventry City making 6 appearances before joining Peterborough United after loan spells at Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United. The player also earned 2 England U19 caps and is highly regarded within football circles. County has also negotiated a sell on clause with Peterborough United for Shaun as we ensure that the club is always at the forefront when making decisions such as this.
Newport County AFC wishes to place on record our thanks to Conor for his performances in an Amber shirt and wish the player all the best in the future. We also welcome Shaun Jeffers to the club in another exciting development for the County. The club appreciates the conduct of Peterborough United throughout our discussions.
Manager Justin Edinburgh sees the potential in the deal and was keen to stress the importance of ensuring the club’s interests are the priority in any such negotiation
‘We need to make sure the club and the squad are looked after when these situations arise. Whilst we recognise this is an excellent opportunity for Conor, we have to continue our progression on and off the pitch and the deal will allow us to do that. I am delighted to welcome Shaun Jeffers to the club, he is a player I have admired for a while and he has the potential to score the goals to maintain our promotion push.’
Chairman Les Scadding added
‘Conor has been great for us and we wish him all the best. The transfer will benefit the club and it was important we could replace Conor before the transfer window shut. The protracted negotiations show that we wanted to make sure the deal was right for Newport County AFC and I certainly believe that is the case. Hopefully this is an example of how hard work pays off and that we are a club that gives people a chance to excel.’
