Stevenage 2-1 County
Newport County AFC fell to a defeat at the hands of Stevenage on Saturday afternoon, Stevenage goals in both halves sealed the points for the hosts and Adam Chapman's strike wasn't enough to recover anything from the game.Following a quiet start to the game County keeper Joe day was called into action on the 20th minute as he got down well to save and push away for a corner to Stevenage, Day, the younger of the two on the pitch, was called into action just moments later as he gathered a loose ball at the near post.
A County corner on the half hour mark was cleared by the Stevange defence, allowing the hosts to break away and force Joe day into another save, pushing the ball behind for another corner to Stevenage. From the resulting corner the deadlock was broken, Charlie Lee found himself with space in the area to head home from close range and give Stevenage the lead in the 32nd minute.
HALF TIME: Stevenage 1-0 County
County started the second half brightly and took the game to Stevenage early on, Robbie Willmott's shot from distance was just over the bar and away for a goal kick within a minute of the restart. Just moments later County had their best chance of the game, Miles Storey found himself one on one with Day but his effort was saved and push away to safety.
Yan Klukowski was next to go close for County as the pressure started to mount, but his effort was blocked and deflected behind for a County corner. Just 10 minutes into the half and County had made two subs as Ismail Yakubu was replaced by Kevin Feely and Chris Zebroski replaced Yan Klukowski.
Despite early County pressure it was Stevenage who got the killer goal with 23 minutes left in the game, Dembele heading home at the far post from the free kick to make it Stevenage 2-0 County. With 10 minutes left there was nearly a third for Stevenage, Ryan Jacksons clearance creeping past the Joe Day's far post and away for a corner.
With five minutes left County began to push hard for a goal as they tried to get back into the game, Miles Storey's header flashing across goal but eventually cleared. Just moments later Mark Byrnes shot was saved and away for a corner, Kevin Feely heading just over from the resulting corner.
Another corner and a goal for County, the ball finding its way to Adam Chapman on the edge of the area who dispatched his effort into the bottom corner to halve the deficit with added time still to go. With a minimum of five minutes additional time County pushed for an equaliser. Chris Zebroski picked up a yellow card in the 91st minute. Just moments later Mark Byrne's shot was saved at the far post and Willmott's effort deflecting wide off Mark Byrne for a goal kick.
With five minutes up in stoppage time County were reduced to ten as Chris Zebroski picked up his second yellow card of the game in the space of five minutes after a foul tackle.
