Newport County AFC 2019/20 Award Winners

4 July 2020

Newport County AFC tonight held it's annual awards ceremony in different circumstances to previous years - with a virtual awards show held online for viewers to watch. The winners were as follows:

Supporters Club Awards:

Young Supporters of the Year

Despite numerous nominations, the Supporters Club were able to present this award to an individual that attends the vast majority of weekend fixtures with her family for the last few season. This years winner is Megan Young.

Supporter of the Year

This award is presented to someone who has shown commitment and support throughout the season and this year our winner is Ethan Brussalis.

Away Player of the Year

The voting for this award highlighted a clear winner by a considerable margin. The winner of this award is Josh Sheehan.

Young Player of the Year
This award is presented to a player that has worked hard in order to accumulate a substantial number of first team appearances this season. The winner of this award is Tristan Abrahams.

Player of the Year
Despite various nominations, this years Newport County AFC Supporters Club’s Player of The Year is awarded to a player that had demonstrated consistency throughout the season. This years Winner is Scot Bennett.

Community Awards:

David Williams Award – Community Player of the Year

The Winner is Matty Dolan.

1) Matty became the Mental Health Ambassador in 2019. Matty had big boots to fill with Dan Butler being the previous Ambassador for 3 years and winning EFL League 2 Community Player of the Year 2018/19. A number of the WWtSS participants asked if Matty could be their Ambassador which he accepted happily.

2) Matty has attended the sessions at Civil 3G at least 5 or 6 times this season and also brought along his little baby.

3) Matty has attended sessions in community venues & schools, he is brilliant with young supporters and visitors on match days at Rodney Parade. He has continued to engage with CitC and participants during lockdown by entering zoom quizzes and sending messages of support to participants.

4) The Mental Health programme at the club couldn’t wish for a better bloke to be their Ambassador. This Award is in memory of David Williams who would get along brilliantly with Matty for sure.


Newport County AFC – PFA Community Champion

The winner is Mark O’Brien.

1) Mark became the NCAFC Disability Ambassador in 2019. He has taken up the role with great enthusiasm and commitment.

2) Mark has attended more community activities than any other player has this last year.

3) Mark has attended sessions in schools, disability centres, mental health, Matchday activities and shopping centres to name a few. He has continued to engage with CitC and participants during lockdown by entering zoom quizzes and sending messages of support to participants.

4) Player Quote (optional): Mark said, “I really enjoy doing the community visits and love that people just take you at face value”.

John Relish Award – College Programme, Managers Player of The Year

This Years winner is Alex Edwards. Alex has developed into an excellent player over the past 12 months and has thrived in our 11v11 games programme. He has been consistent throughout the season and a key part of the success of this year. Alex is a great lad who thoroughly deserves this award due to not just his ability but how he conducts himself as a person. He has been a credit to work with during this year on the college programme and a very worthy winner of the managers player of the year.

Allen Wood Award – College Programme, Players Player of The Year

This years winner is Sam Beckett. Sam has been a big plus to our squad this season. He has regularly performed well in big games and scored a number of key goals at important times which has resulted in his peers voting him the winner of this award. Sam has excelled in our 11v11 games programme. This award is most certainly deserved due to the hard work Sam has put in over the past year.

Melin Homes Award – Ladies Manager Player of the Year

The winner is Rubi Sanges. Rubi has been a breath of fresh air this year due to her being a very coachable individual. Rubi always gives 100% in everything she does and is well thought of within the group. For someone who before joining the programme had never played a competitive fixture she has most certainly done herself proud throughout the duration of the season.

Accent on education Award – Ladies Players Player of The Year

The winner of this award is Molly Thompson. Molly has conducted herself extremely well throughout this season and her performances in goal have been outstanding. Great to see how much she has developed since joining the programme. Molly is a very worthy winner of this award and we hope she continues to enjoy her Football next season.

John Macey Award – Walking Football Players Player of The Year

The winner is Seamus McGoldrick. Seamus is a regular attender to our walking Football programme and is someone who has very rarely missed a session. Seamus is a great guy who gets on well with everyone and always gives 100% for his team mates. Congratulations to a worthy winner of this award.

Keith Tennant Award – WWTSS Players Player of The Year

Lastly, this winner is Dustin Simpson. Dustin is a very well liked member of the We Wear the Same Shirt programme. He has been attending sessions for over two years and always gives 100% at training & matches. Dustin not only works hard on his own fitness and skills but is always looking out for and helping others. He is well worthy of this award and we would all like to say thanks for always helping others.
