MATCH REPORT: Newport County 2-1 Barrow

29 January 2022

Dom Telford's early first-half brace helped secure Newport County's fourth win in a row with a 2-1 triumph over Barrow.

Telford, back in the line-up after missing Tuesday's trip to Leyton Orient, wasted no time doing what he does, as he guided a close-range header in the back of the net after just 94 seconds.

The 'Best on Earth' then doubled his and Newport's tally 10 minutes later with a curled shot into the left of the goal from the right of the box.

Finn Azaz did superbly to win the ball in midfield and then charge at the defence before playing in Telford for 2-0.

Azaz himself then had a shot from close range saved by Barrow keeper Farman after the stopper had, seconds earlier, done well to charge Telford down and deny him a hat-trick by the 18-minute mark.

Barrow rarely threatened the County goal, with their first effort at Nick Townsend being a strike from Remeao Hutton that drifted harmlessly wide of Townsend's right-hand post from range.

Townsend was needed to make an impressive save on 38 minutes as he beat away a header from point-blank range from Aaron Amadi-Holloway.

Courtney Baker-Richardson had County's first chance of the second half after combining with Telford in a counter-attacking move for Newport, but Baker-Richardson's strike from a tight angle was saved by the feet of Farman.

Barrow got back into the game in the game in the 62nd minute via a freak own goal.

A cross in from the left was punched clear by Townsend but it rebounded off Mickey Demetriou and in for 2-1.

The final half an hour became a slog, with a host of Barrow players being shown yellow cards, but Oli Cooper almost restored County's two-goal cushion seven minutes from time. Farman did well to palm away the Swansea loanee's strike, however.

Barrow came close to levelling twice in the closing minutes. First, Ollie Banks headed wide of the right-hand post from point-blank range and a minute later Tom Beadling struck just wide of the same post from distance.
