MATCH REPORT: Newport County 4-0 Harrogate Town

15 January 2022

Newport County secured their first win of 2022 courtesy of a commanding 4-0 thrashing of Harrogate at Rodney Parade.

Mickey Demetriou put County 1-0 up from the penalty spot, Dom Telford's brace stretched the score to 3-0 and Courtney Baker-Richardson capped off the win with the fourth goal.

After a quiet start, County started the rout when captain Demetriou slotted in a penalty into the bottom left corner after Telford was brought down in the box by Josh Falkingham. Mark Oxley went the right way but the penalty was inch-perfect for 1-0.

Newport dominated the first half from that point on, with Scot Bennett heading wide while before Baker-Richardson smashed a shot narrowly over the bar after being set up by his strike partner.

Oli Cooper hit the post with a header from a tight angle while Baker-Richardson was denied well by Oxley in a one-on-one as the Exiles pushed for the two-goal cushion.

Harrogate's only chance of note saw Nick Townsend make a superb diving save to his right to push a George Thomson strike over the bar.

The hosts finally got the second goal their play deserved when Telford flicked in from close range to convert a low ball in from the left by Azaz.

County started the second half as they ended the first, as did Telford - with a goal.

With 49 minutes played, Azaz got his second assist of the game by picking out Telford on the left of the box who had all the time in the world to pick his spot and slot it past Oxley for 3-0.

Six minutes later it was 4-0 with Baker-Richardson adding his name to the scoresheet. Telford turned provider this time by picking out the forward who, again, had seemingly-endless time to round Oxley and slot into an empty net for 4-0.

The game as a contest was done from that point if it wasn't already, and County saw the game out with ease to secure a comfortable victory.
