This Monday, we kick off 2024 with the long drive east to Sutton United. With the fixtures coming thick and fast over the festive period, keeping up with everything that is going on can be tricky. So, why not take a break, kick back, and revisit our 3-1 victory over Sutton United from earlier in the campaign?
Storm Gerrit may be rocking our houses now, but the weather was not much different when we welcomed Sutton United on August 26th. In a summer that was defined by bad weather, the bulk of the match was highlighted by its torrential downpour, but nothing was going to dampen the spirits of the Newport faithful.
The game came after back-to-back away clashes, and Graham Coughlan’s men were full of confidence following a comprehensive 3-0 win away at Forest Green Rovers.
Despite some nice football being played, the first half produced very few chances for us. Our most notable effort came in the 37th minute. Will Evans, fresh from his brace away at Forest Green, was found running through on goal, only for his effort to be stopped by the outstretched hands of Jack Rose in the Sutton goal.
It was the visitors that opened the scoring against the run of play early in the second half. After saving a close-range effort from Scott Kashket, Nick Townsend could do little to stop Omari Patrick driving home the opener.
Adam Lewis was on fine form that afternoon, and his impressive performance was rewarded in the 70th minute. A dangerous ball across the face of the box was headed into the Sutton net by their own defender, Joe Kizzi.
With the game level and time still on the clock, we turned up the pressure on the visitors, and this paid off just seven minutes after our first goal. Shane McLoughlin did well to keep the ball in on the line before teeing it up perfectly for Harry Charsley to head us into the lead.
There was still time for one more, though, with Seb Palmer-Houlden playing a perfect cross across the area for Will Evans to head home and grab his sixth goal in four games.
