Moroccan menace Yusaf Akhamrich was County's tormentor in chief as his two goals in 18 in first-half minutes settled a tense League Two relegation clash at the Memorial Stadium.
The borrowed Tottenham youngster's first early on was a real screamer and it really put the skids under the Port's efforts to escape a bottom two they have been encased in now for over four months.
County fought hard throughout this vital lunchtime contest, but they struggled to contain the fleet-footed Akhamrich who, on this showing, is surely destined for a top Premiership career.
Rampant Rovers belied a side who had lost eight consecutive games at BS7 and this emphatic result was sealed when the Gas' Swiss striker Fabrizio Caveen added to Port's woes near the end.
County will now await results from fellow strugglers around them, but after receiving Grimsby at Rodney Parade next Saturday they then face three difficult away trips to Swindon, MK Dons and Salford, clubs who all have very genuine promotion ambition.
Newport handed a full Football League debut for James Crole, the striker snapped up by County from JD Premier League outfit Penybont earlier this month, but it wasn't the young Welshman's day.
Experienced Liam Shephard slotted into a right-side wing-back role with Lee Jenkins returning as a third centre-half alongside skipper Matt Baker and Ryan Delaney.
Rovers were seeking just a second victory in 18 league games - manager Steve Evans rang the changes - drafting in Alfie Kilbour to lead the side, brilliant Akhamrich came onto the right side attack and Ryan De Havilland dropped into a defensive midfield position.
Professional football displayed it's acceptable face in the pre-match build up as popular County kit person David Pipe, a former Wales international, who made 525 appearances in a long career, received a special recognition cap from Rovers for resolute commitment to their cause between 2007-2010.
Yet, all niceties were soon swept aside as the charged atmosphere of the occasion kicked in. Gwent voices were heard long before kick off, ringing off the Gloucester Road, a 1,359-strong Amber Army full of hope and expectancy after making the 26.5-mile Seven crossing into Avon.
That initial optimism appeared to be justified with the Exiles troubling Rovers in the sixth minute - Ciaran Brannon rippling the side-netting with a stabbed effort from Anthony Glennon's in-swinging corner.
Yet Port were in a spin on twelve minutes as they fell behind to a stunning strike. Christian Fuchs' men never really cleared a Jack Sparkes corner, and Akhamrich steadied before sending an 18-yard left-footer screeching past Jordan Wright.
That was the Gas' first goal in 101 minutes and they almost notched another moments later as De Haviiland saw his deflected shot drift inches wide of Wright's far post. A leaping Riley Harbottle then moving between Baker and Delaney to glance off target as Rovers turned up the heat.
Worse was to come, of course. The menacing Akhamrich, being watched by a posse of scouts from higher division clubs, sped past Glennon, the rookie then beating Wright with with a crisp low finish.
Glennon was cautioned for tripping a dancing Akhamrich on the half hour. But the 20-year-old's trickery then set up Sparkes, the left-back's effort deflecting over the bar off County midfielder Harrison Biggins, who had raced back to bolster his team's under-pressure defence.
The Exiles had altered strategy at the break borrowed Swansea City utility player Ben Lloyd leaving the bench to replace Delaney, as Fuchs switched to a back four. The Pirates' steely approach had been evident throughout a tinder-box clash - De Havilland was fortunate not to see yellow for a late lunge on Biggins.
Frustrated Biggins was cautioned himself for pole-axing Akhamrich on the edge of the area, County then making another tweak as Joe Thomas came on for Shephard.
The Port were desperately seeking a lifeline back into a contest that was fast slipping away from them. All-action Biggins powered a header against Rovers captain Kilbour and then hammered the rebound wide. .
Yet Spurs youngster Akhamrich reminded County of his menace, seeing a curling free-kick pouched by Wright, the ex-Grimsby custodian then punching clear another bending blast from the long-haired flyer.
County were glad to see the back of Akhamrich with the clock ticking down. Yet battling Port showed late spirit, Bobby Kamwa going around Shaq Forde on the left, before seeing his drive flash over the bar.
Any semblance of hope Newport had of scrambling back into the contest evaporated on 90 minutes, though. Forde's angled ball threaded between Baker and Jenkins, Caveens ramming home his 14th goal of the campaign in clinical fashion.
