Newport County AFC can confirm that club captain James Clarke has announced his retirement from professional football.
Clarke brings the curtain down on an outstanding 19-year playing career, having made his senior debut in 2007. Over that time, he accumulated over 550 career appearances and recorded more than 45,000 minutes of professional football, leaving a lasting mark across the game.
Since joining the Exiles in June 2021, Clarke has been a hugely influential figure both on and off the pitch. He made 138 appearances for Newport County, scoring five goals and providing six assists, and was later appointed club captain in recognition of his leadership, professionalism and commitment.
One of the defining highlights of Clarke’s time at Rodney Parade came during the 2023–24 FA Cup run, when his goals in both legs against Eastleigh played a crucial role in Newport County’s progression. Those performances helped set up the unforgettable FA Cup tie against Manchester United, securing Clarke’s place in recent club history.
A commanding and dependable central defender, Clarke consistently led by example, setting high standards within the squad and offering invaluable guidance to younger players throughout his time at the club. Last season, his influence was recognised when he was named Nelson Jardim’s Player of the Season for his contributions during the latter half of the campaign, and following Jardim’s departure, Clarke stepped into an assistant coaching role alongside Dafydd Williams for the final few fixtures of the season.
Clarke began his professional career at Oxford United, before spells with Oxford City, Salisbury City, Woking, Bristol Rovers and Walsall. During his career, he earned individual honours including EFL League Two Player of the Month and Goal of the Month during the 2019–20 season, before bringing his experience and leadership to Newport County.
James Clarke will be our guest of honour for the upcoming fixture against Grimsby Town on February 7, providing the club and supporters with the opportunity to congratulate him on an outstanding career, while also allowing Clarkey the chance to thank the Amber Army for their incredible support.
Everyone at Newport County AFC would like to place on record their sincere thanks to James for his exceptional service to the club and congratulate him on a remarkable playing career.
James Clarke will always be welcome at Rodney Parade, and we wish him and his family every success in the next chapter.
