Club Statement | Dafydd Williams and Rob Thomas Depart

Dafydd Williams

Newport County can confirm that assistant head coach Dafydd Williams and goalkeeping coach Rob Thomas have left the club by mutual consent.

Both coaches were part of Nelson Jardim’s backroom staff during the 2024-25 Sky Bet League Two campaign.

Williams originally joined the Exiles in July 2023 as first team coach under former manager Graham Coughlan. Following the arrival of Jardim in the summer of 2024, he was promoted to assistant head coach for the current season and took interim charge for the final two games of the campaign.

His coaching career began at the age of 17 after deciding to pursue a future off the pitch. He developed his craft with the academies at both Cardiff City and Swansea City before spending several years at Bristol Rovers, working predominantly with the Under-18 and Under-21 squads. Further coaching roles at Gloucester City and Barry Town United eventually led to his move to Rodney Parade.

Goalkeeping coach Thomas joined the club in October, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge. He previously spent two seasons with Haverfordwest County in the JD Cymru Premier and served for 15 years with the FAW Trust as the National Goalkeeper Coach Education Coordinator.

Throughout his career, Thomas has played a pivotal role in advancing goalkeeper coaching across Wales, having led the FAW’s national goalkeeper program and delivered coaching education from Level 1 (FAW Introduction to Coaching Goalkeepers) through to Level 4 (FAW/UEFA Goalkeepers A Licence).

Chairman Huw Jenkins said: “It goes without saying that we thank both Daf and Rob for their efforts and commitment to the club during their time here.

“I am sure they will both be successful with their new challenges ahead and everyone at the club wishes them well for the future.’’

The club is currently finalising a new management team which will be announced within the next two weeks, together with a player retained and released list.
