Newport County can confirm that Matt Baker has decided to explore new opportunities after turning down an improved contract offer at Rodney Parade.
Matt Baker first joined Newport County on loan in 2023 before signing a permanent deal in 2024, going on to establish himself as an important player in defence.
His development during his time at the club was clear, with consistent performances helping to strengthen the back line. Following the retirement of James Clarke, Baker was named club captain for the 2025-26 season, reflecting his standing within the squad and leadership around the group.
Baker’s decision now brings his time at Newport County to a close after discussions over a new contract, with the defender opting to move on and take on a fresh challenge.
Newport County now continues planning for the upcoming campaign as squad preparation and recruitment work continues.
Everyone at Newport County thanks Matt Baker for his commitment and service during his time at Rodney Parade and wishes him well for the next chapter of his career.
