County boss Christian Fuchs faced up to the sharp harshness of reality after a second-half cave in at Oldham's Boundary Park writes Tony Rees
The Leicester City Premiership title winner had seen his charges crash 3-0 with all the Latic strikes rocketing into the Newport net inside 37 minutes either side of the hour - County ruthlessly washed away in a relentless Oldham tide.
Bristling with emotion Fuchs reflected, "We probably need our fans more now than at any other time as a club. I came to Newport because of the people who run the club. They really care and are all wearing so many different hats to help the cause.
"My assistant - Mark Smith - his father is a Newport County season-ticket holder so I had a full breakdown on the type of passion we can expect from our supporters. being honest, it was why I wanted to become Newport's manager."
Fuchs, a 78-times Austrian international, who only arrived in Gwent 48 hours ago, will now have a series of intensive training sessions in the coming week with a clash against Barrow looming next Saturday, at Rodney Parade.
Said Fuchs, "We'll need to go back to basics, before you'll see me fashion any side in my image. We made too many unforced errors today - and it really cost us. We must start eliminating the mistakes.
"But when I look at my players in the dressing room, I know they left it all out there. They have heart, and you can, and I will. build on that.
"I am looking forward to my first home game in charge - against Barrow next Saturday. I want our fans to come out in force so that we can turn things around together."
