Newport County face their fourth league game in ten days as they travel to Salford City in League Two on Tuesday evening (17 Feb).
The two teams have only played each other in the league since 2019, with this set to be the 15th time they have locked horns.

The first meeting between the two was the previous November, seeing Salford run out 2-1 winners at Rodney Parade.
The stakes were significantly higher in this EFL Trophy Semi-Final, however, with a place in the final and a trip to Wembley at stake.
Newport squeezed through their group, despite losing two of their three games, on goal difference, beating Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City’s under-21 sides and Milton Keynes Dons in the knockout rounds.
Salford, in their first season as an EFL club, had a spotless record in the competition, winning all five matches played before this one.
A tight game ended up goalless after 90 minutes, requiring a penalty shootout: misses from Tristan Abrahams and Ryan Inniss ended up denying Newport a third successive Wembley appearance in a season.
Salford would have to wait until March the following year due to the COVID-19 league postponement, but they stunned League One Portsmouth on penalties to win their first major domestic trophy.

The resumption of football after the pandemic brought out the best from Newport, with The Exiles top of the league going into this FA Cup clash.
Salford were in 7th following a return of 6 wins in their opening 13, but Newport had the advantage of already knocking out Championship sides Swansea City and Watford in an impressive EFL Cup run.
County had knocked out Leyton Orient in the First Round, with Salford beating non-league Hartlepool United after extra-time.
After a goalless first-half, goals from Jamie Proctor, Pádraig Amond and Saikou Janneh lifted Newport into the Third Round for the third season in a row.
Despite a stoppage time equaliser, it was penalty heartache again for Michael Flynn’s side against Premier League Brighton, losing the shootout 4-3.

Less than a month after their cup tie, it was back to league business as County travelled to the Peninsula Stadium for the first time.
Newport had suffered their third league defeat away to Leyton Orient days earlier, with Salford maintaining an unbeaten home record in their opening 16 fixtures.
Tom Clarke had opened the scoring for The Ammies before half-time, but the hosts missed a penalty with little under an hour gone.
They were made to pay when Kevin Ellison was bundled over in stoppage time, allowing Josh Sheehan to rescue a point for the visiting side, much to Salford’s consternation.
However, the reverse fixture would prove to be bittersweet for Sheehan – he was sent off in a 0-0 draw the following month.

Six consecutive wins for Salford against Newport in League Two left The Exiles with something to prove when this fixture rolled around.
With eight games played, Newport had won four and lost four, with a 2-1 victory at home to Crewe Alexandra preceding the visit of Karl Robinson’s outfit.
But Salford had not lost on the road in their opening three away games, leaving a tough task for Nelson Jardim.
As the floodlights shone at Rodney Parade, Kyle Hudlin and Aaron Wildig both scored to ease Newport into a 2-0 lead at half-time, and a Michael Spellman finish rounded off a comfortable victory for the Amber Army.

Newport may still be searching for their first win in Greater Manchester, but they can take inspiration from the last time they ventured up north.
Five straight defeats had left County’s season in tatters, with Salford losing two on the bounce to leave their play-off credentials somewhat dubious.
Another midweek game was eventually determined by two penalties, with Shane McLoughlin opening from the spot for Newport before Salford scored one of their own through Hakeeb Adelakun.
Tyrese Fornah was shown a second yellow card later on, but Salford held out for a point.
This marked a big turning point for Newport, who would go on to win their next four league games, conceding just one goal in the process.
