Newport County is backing former player Mike Fowler after he revealed he has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.

Mike shared the news with supporters on Wednesday, September 9, following several months of poor health and a number of medical tests.

The former Wales youth international, who represented Newport County during his playing career, said doctors have so far found no indication that the tumour has spread.

However, the tumour is large and Mike faces further tests and important decisions regarding his treatment, including whether surgery is possible.

Mike said | “I have some difficult news to share. After a couple of months of poor health and a number of tests, I was told on Friday that I have a malignant brain tumour.

“The positive news is that, at this stage, there is no indication that it has spread.

“However, the tumour is large and there are still further tests and some big decisions ahead as my medical team works out the best course of treatment, including whether surgery is possible.”

Mike has since launched a GoFundMe appeal to help support him and his family through the difficult period ahead.

The football community has rallied around Mike, with messages of support coming from former clubs, teammates, colleagues and supporters.

After his playing career, Mike moved into coaching and management, most recently taking charge of Redditch United in May 2025. He guided the club to a campaign that narrowly missed out on a play-off place on goal difference before his departure was announced in July.

He has also managed Tamworth, worked as assistant manager at Forest Green Rovers and served as academy boss at Solihull Moors.

Mike thanked everyone who has supported him since receiving his diagnosis.

“It’s a lot to take in, but I’m taking things one day at a time,” he said.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have so many good people around me, and I can’t thank everyone enough for the messages, calls, visits and support.

“It genuinely means more than I can say.

“There are challenges ahead, but for now I’m focusing on the next step and staying positive.”

Newport County would like to send its very best wishes to Mike, his family and everyone close to him during this difficult time.
