As part of EFL Youth Development Week, Newport County is celebrating the progress of its young players, including first-year scholar Harrison Halpin.
Halpin, a 16-year-old centre-half from Newport, has been with the Academy setup since a young age and is now settling into life as a scholar at the University of South Wales base.
“I think it’s very professional here. The environment is really good, especially now we’ve moved to USW where we’re close to the first team. I really enjoy being a first-year scholar in that kind of environment.”
Alongside his footballing development, Halpin has also impressed in the classroom. Having recently received his exam results, the young defender admitted he was proud of what he achieved.
“I did better than I thought I would. I passed every subject and even got an A* in Welsh. My family are really proud, and I’m happy to know I’ve got something to fall back on in the future if football doesn’t work out.”
Halpin’s journey carries an extra sense of pride given his family’s long-standing connection to the club.
“I’m a local boy and a massive County fan. My dad’s a huge supporter, and we’ve always been part of the Newport community. To be here now, representing the club, is a great experience.”
Halpin’s story highlights the importance of youth development both on and off the pitch, showing the value of combining education with the dream of representing Newport County.
