Hayden Mullins | “We’re eight games unbeaten, with positives to build on.”

Hayden Mullins reflected on Newport County’s draw against York City, Kion Etete’s first goal for the club, the second-half performance and the squad’s growing confidence.

Mullins admitted that breaking down 10-man York proved difficult but was pleased with how his side improved after the break.

“I thought the boys gained more control, moved the ball into areas of the pitch where we knew we could hurt them. It’s never easy when you’re playing against a team with 10 men, but I thought we controlled the second half really well.”

On the half-time substitutions that helped change the game, Mullins explained the tactical thinking behind bringing on Matty Smith and Kion Etete.

“We needed more bodies in the box. Matty did really well and did exactly what we needed, while Keone came on and scored, which was really pleasing.”

Etete marked his first appearance for Newport County with an equaliser, having worked his way back from injury. Mullins praised the forward’s determination and commitment.

“He’s hungry to do well. You can see it in him. He looked wholehearted, 100% into the cause, and that’s exactly what we need. We have to build him up and make sure he’s ready when he starts a game for 90 minutes.”

Despite being disappointed not to take all three points, Mullins highlighted the positives from another unbeaten home performance.

“I’m half disappointed that we didn’t win the game, but also mindful that we didn’t lose it. We’re eight games unbeaten, and there are loads of positives to build on.”

Mullins also praised the togetherness within the squad and stressed the importance of giving supporters something to get behind.

“We want to try and bring the crowd with us. We want to give them something to cheer about. We need that noise and energy on the pitch, and that’s what we try to generate.”
