Delighted County boss Dave Hughes piled the praise on his warriors after their battling first-round FA Cup win over Gillingham at Rodney Parade - Exiles edging through after a nerve-tingling penalty shootout, this, after a thrilling tie was locked 2-2 after extra time.
Beaming Hughes declared,: “It was a great cup tie, end to end, showing a huge amount of character, as the players have done consistently. I’m naturally delighted. It was an immensely proud moment for the group. A massive team effort.”
Highlighted the quality of the opposition, former Cardiff centre-back added: “Gillingham are a really good team. We know that from our league games. They carry threats and pose challenges. To come through today speaks volumes about the mental strength and composure of the players, especially in the penalty shootout.”
Master coach Hughes picked out the midfield diamond for special acclaim, saying, "The midfield players covered huge distances and delivered some outstanding spells. It’s a testament to their application, energy, and intensity. The belief and desire they showed during extra time, and then stepping up to take penalties, was excellent.”
Hughes also acknowledged input from the County coaching and medical staff, saying, "Credit to the medical team for managing Lee Jenkins’ head injury carefully."
Hughes also added, "Cameron Antwi showed great composure during the shootout, which was key to our victory. And, of course, it was a positive day for the supporters. They made a fantastic atmosphere despite the smaller crowd.”
Hughes now feels momentum is the key to the Exiles rising up the League Two table,
He said,: “It’s important to enjoy today, but we know there’s more work to do. Our focus now turns to the league and next Saturday’s game [against Walsall]. We want to build on this performance and carry the same intensity and belief forward.”
