James Clarke | It’s been a really positive few weeks

James Clarke

James Clarke believes his side can reflect positively on their recent run of form following their 0-0 draw against promotion contenders Bradford City on Saturday afternoon.

The Exiles extended their unbeaten streak to six games after the goalless draw at Rodney Parade, despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men following Jack Shepherd’s red card in the 17th minute.

“The draw today extends our unbeaten run to six, which is great,” Clarke said.

“There have been a few tough away games recently, with the back-to-back Tuesday night fixtures, so it’s been a really positive few weeks.

“To come out of this spell with the points we have is a huge positive, and I’m really pleased for the lads.”

“In football, the next game is always the most important, and fortunately, we’ve had a few good wins in recent weeks.

"The table looks a lot better now after our four wins, but we don’t focus too much on it. We focus on improving day by day and week by week.”

Since returning to the starting lineup, Clarke has formed a strong partnership with Matt Baker, having started the last seven league games together.

With four clean sheets in their last seven league outings, Clarke praised his centre-back partner, who is also a Wales Under-21 international.

“Since he first arrived on loan, Matt has progressed so much. If I was a young player coming through, he’d be someone I’d look up to – it shows just how good he’s been doing.

“He’s a top professional and doesn’t play like a 21-year-old. He’s always in the gym, always working hard in training – just a top professional. When you’re doing that day in, day out, it really shows on the pitch, and that’s exactly what’s happening right now.

I believe there is more to come from Matty as well. I think as a player the more games you play the better you get. Matt’s playing week in, week out now, and you can see his progress getting stronger every day.

“As long as he keeps his feet on the ground and continues to work hard, I’m sure he’ll keep up his good form.”
