Match Preview | Newport County vs Morecambe

match preview

Newport County return to Sky Bet League Two action on Tuesday night as they take on Morecambe (7.45pm).

The Exiles will be looking to secure their second win over the Shrimps this season, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Morecambe back in August.

A win on Tuesday would also see County make it back-to-back league wins for the first time since the wins over Crewe and Salford in late September and early October.

Derek Adams’ side have had a difficult first half to the season, and Morecambe currently sit second from bottom in the league, with just 23 points from 28 games.

Despite scoring the fifth fewest goals in League Two, the Shrimps remain a threat from set pieces, having scored 11 of their 26 goals from dead-ball situations.

In their most recent match, Morecambe pulled off an impressive 4-2 victory over Fleetwood Town, with on-loan Barnsley winger Andrew Dallas the standout player, netting twice to secure all three points for the Shrimps.

One player to keep an eye on is Rhys Williams, who is currently on loan from Premier League giants Liverpool. The central defender brings top-level experience to the Morecambe backline and will be a key figure for the Shrimps as they look to contain the Exiles' attack.

Williams has already amassed 25 appearances for Morecambe this season, adding to a career that includes 19 appearances for Liverpool during the 2020-21 season, including in the Premier League and Champions League.

A familiar face in the Morecambe squad is left-back Adam Lewis, who joined the Shrimps on a free transfer this summer.

Lewis spent two seasons on loan at Newport County between 2022 and 2024, making 58 appearances for the Exiles, scoring three goals. During his time in South Wales, he notably assisted Will Evans’ equalising goal in Newport’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United last year.

Since joining Morecambe, Lewis has made 30 appearances, scoring once.

The two sides met earlier this season at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium, where Newport emerged with a 1-0 victory.

Aaron Wildig’s early strike in the 9th minute, capitalising on a mistake by Morecambe goalkeeper Stuart Moore, proved to be the difference, giving the Exiles all three points.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has traditionally been closely contested, with 22 league meetings between the two sides resulting in 9 wins, 4 draws, and 9 losses each.

However, Newport have had the upper hand in recent encounters, winning 6 of the last 8 league matchups, including the last three in a row. Morecambe have also struggled at Rodney Parade, failing to win in their last six visits (D3 L3), giving the Exiles a strong home record to build on.
