The History

Plymouth Argyle was founded in 1886 as Argyle Football Club. The club's first match was against Caxton, although the Pilgrims lost 2–0.

Just over 15 years after the club was formed, Plymouth became a professional football club as they joined the Southern League. Ten years after joining the league they would win the title.

In 1920, Plymouth would become a founding member of the Football League Third Division. Ten years after joining the league and six consecutive second place finishes, the Pilgrims would win promotion and would join Division Two.

However, after the Second World War Plymouth would suffer relegation to the Third Division South but would ultimately win the league two years later in 1952.

For over 20 years, Plymouth would experience relegation and promotion between the two leagues. During this period, Plymouth would reach the League Cup semi-final as well as beating Santos with a team featuring Pele.

However, during the 1990's Plymouth would suffer financial difficulties as they were relegated to the fourth tier but with Neil Warnock put in charge, Argyle would win promotion at Wembley.

Success continued as Argyle would win the Third Division title in 2002 as they recorded 102 points and eventually reached the Championship.
