Match Preview | Newport County Vs. York City

preview

Newport County continue their league campaign at Rodney Parade this Saturday (October 17) as they welcome York City.

Newport will look to continue their unbeaten start at home, whilst York will look to climb further up the league table.

Here is everything you need to know about our opponents.

The Opposition

York finished top of the National League last season with 108 points after a dramatic game against Rochdale saw them finish first in the last moments of the league campaign.

However, the Minstermen were knocked out in the first round of the FA Cup, losing 3-2 to Barnsley after a 91st-minute winner from Marc Roberts.

York also got knocked out of the FA Trophy in the third round following a penalty shootout defeat to Clitheroe.

This season, the Minstermen currently find themselves in fifth place following their impressive form so far this season.

York could not qualify for the EFL Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Crawley, in which they were unable to compete in the competition.

The History

York City were founded in May 1922, and after only seven years of being formed, they were elected to the Football League, being placed in the Third Division North.

Ten years after being elected to the Football League, the Minstermen would have FA Cup success as they managed to reach the sixth round before losing in a 2-1 replay against Huddersfield Town.

York continued to play during World War Two, winning the Combined Counties Cup in 1942. Further cup success came their way as, in 1955, they reached an FA Cup semi-final before losing the replay to Newcastle United.

In 1958, York became a founding member of Division Four and won promotion to the Third Division in 1959. However, for many years the club would suffer multiple relegations and promotions.

But in 1974, the Minstermen reached the Second Division for the first time in their history and managed to finish fifth in their first season. However, they would suffer relegation the season after.

York would make it back to the Second Division another time, but after being relegated in 1999, the club would suffer from financial problems and would enter administration in 2002. The Supporters’ Trust would buy the club in 2003, as they helped keep the club secure.

However, after several decades in the Football League, York was relegated in 2004 and bounced between the Football League and non-league for many years.

The Minstermen did, however, win the FA Trophy against the Exiles in 2012 and, as of recently, have been promoted back to League Two, where they currently sit in fifth place.

The Head Coach

The current head coach of York City is Scott Lindsey.

Lindsey began his career as an interim manager at Swindon Town in 2010 but would later depart the club following Swindon’s relegation from the Football League.

However, Lindsey would kick off with his first permanent job at Chatham Town and would later manage Swindon, Crawley and MK Dons before his current job at York.

The Englishman has seen some success as a head coach, earning promotion with Crawley in 2024 after winning the League Two playoffs.

Ones To Watch

Harry Boyes is a player who will look to cause danger on the left hand-side of the pitch. Boyes has already created many chances for the Minstermen, with the left wingback providing six assists this season as well as scoring twice. Boyes is also a defensive threat, having only conceded four goals in his last five games.

Ollie Pearce will also be looking to feed off Boyes’ assists as he looks to add to his goal tally. Pearce has already scored four goals in the league this season but has also provided four assists. Despite this being the striker’s first season in the EFL, he has shown no signs of fear.
