This Tuesday evening (17 Feb), Newport County are once again on the road in EFL League Two as they head north to face Salford City.
The game kicks off at 7.45pm, with Newport looking for their first ever win at the Peninsula Stadium.
Salford currently sit in the play-off places, with County looking to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.
State of Play
A tricky run of form could not have come at a worse time for Newport, who were overtaken by Harrogate Town after their weekend defeat at Milton Keynes.
Aaron Collins’ early strike meant Newport fell to a fourth defeat in five, despite the away side having chances late on to rescue a point.
They must now look upwards at Crawley Town, who are five points ahead in the league, with Barrow and Bristol Rovers just a point further on.
This also marks the final away game of a busy ten days, with Newport returning to Rodney Parade on Saturday to face Cambridge United.
Our Opponents
Salford City have been among the form teams in League Two this season, though recent results have blunted their promotion charge somewhat.
Seven wins in nine games moved The Ammies up to second in the table in January, but two defeats in that time have moved them back down to fifth.
However, the Mancunians have as many as three games in hand on their nearest competitors, with their FA Cup exploits postponing several league matches.
They pushed Manchester City all the way in the Fourth Round last Saturday, eventually losing 2-0 – a huge improvement from their 8-0 defeat at the same venue last year.
What They Said
Karl Robinson expressed pride at his team’s battling display on Saturday afternoon.
“We haven’t won, but we won the game we wanted to win”, he said afterwards.
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s fixture, Robinson stated: “We want to make sure that we turn this around and we are ready for Tuesday night.
“It’s about turning that mentality to being really positive, and trying to get ourselves going in this league now.
“We need everyone in the area to back the players and give ourselves the best opportunity.”
Head-to-Heads
The two have been inseparable since Salford’s promotion in 2019, playing each other in the league every season in that time.
It is Salford who have the superior record, winning nine of the 14 clashes between the two over the years. Newport have two wins, and they have shared three draws.
The reverse fixture last August saw Salford pinch a 1-0 win at Rodney Parade.
Salford have only lost once to Newport in the league, a 3-1 victory for The Exiles back in October 2024. County’s only other win was an FA Cup Second Round success in 2020.
