Match Report | Cambridge United 2-0 Newport County

MR Cambridge Away

Newport County were defeated 2-0 away from home in their Sky Bet League Two clash with Cambridge United.

Kelland Watts’ header put the U’s ahead late in the first half and James Brophy doubled the lead midway through the second, getting on the end of a rebounded effort.

The first chance of the match fell to Sullay Kaikai who’s shot from the edge of the box sailed over the bar of Nik Tzanev’s goal.

Newport County had their own chance as Anthony Glennon whipped his free kick into Cambridge’s box, but Jake Eastwood was quick off his line to punch the ball away from danger.

The U’s promptly responded as Ben Knight’ curling effort from outside the box was put just wide of the post.

With almost five minutes of the first half to go, Watts got on the end of a Kaikai corner and headed the hosts into the lead.

Half-Time

Newport County got off to a fast start as Ben Lloyd’s deep cross was strongly punched out of play by Eastwood.

Lee Jenkins’ throw-in caused a scramble in the box and Glennon was fast to fast to flick the ball goalward, but Eastwood got low to keep the ball out.

Cambridge’s well-worked corner fell to Kaikai who’s close ranged effort was instinctively saved by Tzanev.

The U’s doubled their lead with 15 minutes to go as Kylian Kouassi’s effort comes off the post and Brophy was the quickest to react as he slotted the ball home.

The Exiles responded with their own chance as Kamwa’s driven cross found Tome Davies in the box, but the defender was unable to beat Eastwood from close range.
