Newport County and Jordan Wright secured a vital clean sheet as the hosts earned a hard-fought point against Barnet at Rodney Parade.
In challenging conditions on Boxing Day, Newport County produced a disciplined defensive display to claim a first shutout in several matches, with Wright and the back line standing firm to deny the visitors.
Head coach Christian Fuchs made sweeping changes following the defeat at Colchester United, switching to a back three with Matt Baker returning alongside James Clarke and Lee Jenkins. Ciaran Brennan came into midfield, while Sammy Braybrooke was pushed into a more advanced role in support of Nathan Opoku and Michael Spellman.
Newport County started brightly and created several opportunities in the first half. Sammy Braybrooke’s incisive pass released Spellman, who rounded goalkeeper Cieran Slicker but saw his effort cleared.
The hosts continued to press, with Cameron Antwi’s strike blocked inside the area before Tom Davies went close with a powerful effort from distance that narrowly missed the target.
Newport County felt they should have been awarded a penalty just before the break when Spellman went down under a challenge from Idris Kanu, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Despite their attacking intent, the hosts were also required to remain alert defensively. Barnet threatened through Danny Collinge before the interval, while Jordan Wright produced key saves after the restart to deny Nnamdi Ofoborh.
As the game progressed, Newport County made changes in search of a winner, with Courtney Baker-Richardson, Ben Lloyd and Liam Shephard introduced, while Bobby Kamwa also entered the action late on.
Barnet pushed forward in the closing stages, with substitute Dennis Adeniran going close, but Newport County held firm. Strong defensive performances from Clarke, Jenkins, Baker and Joe Thomas ensured the clean sheet, while Brennan added energy in midfield.
The result moves Newport County closer to safety and provides a platform to build on heading into the new year.
